Jrviiiviiiiiiiiiiiiufif Letter From the Editors For the last several years we have witnessed an increasing concern about the quality of our environment and that of life itself. Because of the current awareness of man's need to preserve his environment, we, the editors of the 1971 Hematite, have selected a theme that is particularly appropriate at this crucial time: Ecology. Some define the seventies as the 'eleventh hour, or man’s last chance to conserve wisely what is untouched an.d to improve upon that which is not. If such is the case, we should avail ourselves of this opportunity with purpose. It is not enough to hope for the best, we, the class of 1971, must assume our share of the responsibility for keeping this planet a hospitable place in which to live and to aspire. May you peruse this yearbook with pleasant memories in pleasant surroundings. Sheridan We, the class of 1971, dedicate this yearbook to our principal, James E. Sheridan, who will be retiring in the Spring of this year, Mr. Sheridan has been principal and Assistant Superintendent of Luther L. Wright High School since 1953. He has also been the Class A and Class B Upper Peninsula Representative to the Representative Council of the Michigan Athletic Board and ex-officio member of the Upper Peninsula Athletic Committee, which regulates athletic activities. Mr. Sheridan, who is the Athletic Director of the High School, has been, in the past, coach of our ski team. A native of Michigan, Mr. Sheridan was bom in a southwestern harbor town called Saugatuck, where he attended high school. He received his BA from Albion College in 1931 and his MA from the University of Michigan in 1940. Before coming to Ironwood Mr. Sheridan was principal and Superintendent at Hopkins and at Vassar as well as principal at both Mt. Clemens and Calument, all in Michigan. Outside of the Principal's office, Mr. Sheridan is an all-round sportsman. A well-known scholar of the Civil War Period, he is often called upon to speak at various organizations. He has spent most of his brief summer vacations traveling to all the battle areas of the Civil War. Mr. Sheridan is a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Temple, Rotary Club, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and various Educational Associations. Upon retirement Mr. Sheridan plans to move back to his home town, Saugatuck, for the summers and to his winter home in Florida. Mr. Sheridan has been an asset to our community all the years that he has lived here. Sadly we part with the hope that his visits to our community will be frequent. We wish both Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan happiness and good 4 health. Foreword In our modern world the realization has burst upon us that man has an impelling obligation to preserve and improve his priceless environment. We also need must know of the challenge we face to strive perpetually to improve the quality of human existence. The indelible marks men leave behind upon their world should be only those of noble achievement. While it is not possible for many of us to leave deep footprints on the sands of time there are few, indeed, who cannot make a scratch or two that none in posterity would wish removed. James E. Sheridan . Principal FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: (sitting) David Hjalmquist, Treasurer; Edwin I. Reini, James Cricks, Robert J. Kleimola, President; Alma Nelson, Secretary; Richard R, Rhode. Superintendent; William L. Johnson. President Pro-Tern; (standing) Louis J. Miklesh, Bernard E. Larson, Attorney; Edward Foss. Board of Education Superintendent of Schools Members of the Board of Education are elected by school voters for four year terms. The Board of Education is responsible for determination of school policy and approval of staff members to be employed, courses to be taught, and instructional materials to be used. It is at this time that we would like to thank the board members for their interest and devoted efforts for the benefit of the students of the Ironwood Area School District. RICHARD R. RHODE JOHN J. Dorothy Parker’s Here We Are One-Act Ploy The drama club, very active in the 1950's, was revived last year through the efforts of some interested students who met to read plays. Although this group has not been involved in any major production, it has served to bring together a group of students who intend to stage a one-act play on our new portable stage which is to be set up in our auditorium. In the meantime interest in drama is surviving. MRS. WILKINSON is the advisor. A photo of the group is on page seventy-five. Le petit journal kept students posted on current events, in French, of course. This year an allschool broadcast, in French, was delivered by Angelique Butcher and Linda Strand with remarkable fluency and authenticity of accent, a merveille! International Club The language clubs are trying to involve other students interested in international culture. In the last few years invitations were extended to each other to attend various programs. Recently the French Club hosted a Christmas party and the Latin Club reciprocated with a March program. Perhaps someday a lively International Club wili evolve from these isolated efforts. N.A.S.S. 1st ROW: A. Siirila, J. Aho, G. Butson, D. Lucas, L. Passint, J. Komaromy, R. Tafelski, B. The band has been an integral part of the pep assemblies helped to spur the fighting Red Devils onto victory. In addition, the performances of this energetic group has been a prominent pan of the half-time intermissions at these games. The enthusiasm of these musicians has done much to increase the school spirit of the student body. As in the past, the public has been invited to the concerts, the band has performed. The band also participated in a number of other activities including the musical Kiss Me Kate, the Homecoming Parade, the Memorial Day Parade, the annual R. O. T. C. Inspection, and has made other appearances to promote civic projects. Again this year, members were given an opportunity to display their individual talents at Ashland and Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
