Luther L. Wright High School Ironwood, Michigan Foreword We, the editors of the 1970 Hematite, have chosen Reflections” to symbolize our theme. Every now and then we pause and reflect not only upon what we see presently about us but upon what has long gone by. Rivers and mountains change slowly; bridges and dams are built and destroyed as the need arises; fads and institutions enjoyed by one generation are ridiculed by another; the seasons pass and then return. It is upon reflection that we note the continuity of life and rediscover our identities. We, the editors of the 1970 yearbook, have attempted to capture with a camera, those moments that remembered are more durable commentaries on our four years at Luther L. Wright High School than the recording of statistics. These are the years as we have lived, experienced and viewed them; these are the moments that having been recalled cannot be forgotten. By glancing through the pages of this book, we hope you will find Reflections. Co-Editors, Advisor 3 We, the class of 1970, dedicate this Hematitie to Miss Rosa Pape, who retired in the fall of 1969 after thirty-four years of teaching. Miss Pape has been teaching in the commercial department of L. L. Wright. Her subjects have ranged om typing, shorthand, office machines, business English, office practice to world history and geography. She has always had a Home Room and taken a personal interest in its members. From 1959 to 1968 Miss Pape has acted as advisor of our school paper, working diligently to help make our paper interesting and informative. She has, in the past, also directed the Senior Class Play. Miss Pape has stressed responsibility and thoroughness as worthy and attainable qualities. Miss Pape attended Central Missouri State College, where she received her Bachelor of Science de- gree, and Columbia University, where she received her Master of Science degree. She has also done graduate work at the University of Colorado. Miss Pape majored in social sciences and commercial courses. Her activities have extended into community life. She has been a member of the Junior Woman's Club for fifteen years. Her favorite pastime being bridge, she is a long-time member of the Range Duplicate Bridge Club. Miss Pape, who was born in Missouri, came to Ironwood in 1944. She has made Ironwood her permanent home. In summers she returns to Missouri to visit her family and relatives. Because of her devotion and dedication to L. L. Wright and its students and to the welfare of the community, we dedicate this book to Miss Rosa Pape. 4 Board of Education SEATED: Robert Kleimola, President Pro-Tem; Louis Miklesh, President; Alma Nelson, Secretary; Richard R. Rohde, Superintendent. STANDING: Edwin Reini; William L. Johnson; David Hjalmquist, Treasurer; Edward Foss; James Cricks; Bernard Larson, Attorney. Rohde Principal's M ess age Greatness is the quality that enables men to bear up under disaster, to withstand the heartbreak of defeat and the debility of grief, to smile when tears would be easier, to resist evil and despise hate but love love, to follow ever a faith and a dream - these things are what any man can do, and so be great. Wright is a chapter of the National Junior Classical League which is composed of local classical clubs in junior and senior high schools. The chapter also affiliates with the state organization, the Michigan Junior Classical League. The fundamental purpose of the Junior Classical League is to encourage among young people an interest in and an appreciation of the civilization, language, literature, and art of Greece and Rome, and to give the young people some understanding of the debt of our own American culture to that of classical antiquity. It provides an opportunity for Latin students (active and graduated) to participate in extra curricular activities (skits, pageants, movies, tapes, discussions) and to promote the classical cause. Each year the students have an opportunity to participate not only in local activities but also in state and national activities. The National Convention takes place annually in August in a different state each year. Elections of national officers and exchange of club ideas, and participation in Roman life occur during the National Convention. The enthusiasm of these musicians has done much to increase the school spirit of the student body. As in the past, the public has been invited to the concerts the Band has performed. The Band also participated in a number of other activities including the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, the Homecoming Parade, the Memorial Day Parade, the annual ROTC Inspection, and has made other appearances to promote civic projects.
