Luther L. Wright High School Ironwood, Michigan i Table of Contents FOREWORD DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY UNDERCLASSMEN SENIORS ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS SENIOR ACTIVITIES INDEX ADVERTISEMENTS 2 Foreword We, the editors of the 1969 HEMATITE, have chosen Water” to symbolize our theme. The passage of water from a tiny stream to a river emptying into a vast ocean is comparable to the growthofan individual from childhood to maturity. Both can be at times turbulent or calm. Both can effect great changes or remain static. Both are fascinating to observe as they pursue their ways through or around obstacles. Both are inspiring to the beholder and to the partaker of life. If a student of Luther L. Wright, while paging through his yearbook, can retrace his footsteps with pleasure or can enjoy re-living experiences of his years at this high school, we shall feel that we have succeeded in capturing the significant and nostalgic memories worth recalling. We present to you the 1969 HEMATITE. Co-Editors, i 3 Dedication — Miss Alma Nelson Miss Alma Nelson has held a secretarial position in the Ironwood Area School District throughout her entire career. Except for the first few years, during which she was employed as secretary to the principals of Newport School, the Junior High School, and Luther L, Wright High School, she has been employed as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education. She pursues her tasks with thoroughness and with courtesy. In addition, Miss Nelson is interested in civic affairs and the well-being of the community. She serves the Salem Lutheran Church congregation as organist and occasionally accompanies the Luther L. Wright band and choir. She participates actively in the functions of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She likes people and people like her. Therefore, because of her devoted efforts to our school and community, her cheerful willingness to help students, and her pleasing personality toward all people, we, the class of 1969, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Alma Nelson. 4 ADMINISTRATION ,h j- Board of Education SEATED: David Hjalmquist, Treasurer; Robert Kleimola; Louis Miklesh, President; Alma Nelson, Secretary; Richard R. Rohde, Superintendent. STANDING: William L. Johnson; Edwin Reini, President Pro-Tern; Anton Raykovich, Bernard Larson, Attorney; George Kahara. SUPERINTENDENT Richard R, Rohde Members of the Board of Education are elected by school voters for four year terms. The Board of Education is responsible for determination of school policy and approval of staff members to be employed, courses to be taught, and instructional materials to be used. It is at this time we would like to thank the board members for their interest and devoted efforts for the benefit of the students of the Ironwood Area School District. 6 .r . •- . ; y’ •' ■ ' ,-t ‘ -v'- - •- .: 3 - k , - r - - - 2 Z£ ' V3 ' . -fef-. r-T ' £ jV' 5 .- . . : U o ► « - f . : -- x .,. -•?' .a- ' V'i’r ‘- A • r: 4 •V' jfcr ' V4j£ ! - . .w - v a .T-V T ’ . ■ _ ■ • IN Jk- - r v« _ ft | V4 • • _ r ’ ' J - ■ .J . ________- K 3Cd.______________________________________ 2 Principal's Message The fascination of flowing water lies both in its transience and in its constancy. It is the epitome of permanence and yet the essence of change. Men likewise attract us when the strength and stability of their characters are matched with an ever growing understanding of life’s meaning and mystery which eventually we call wisdom. 8 James E. Representing the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character, membership in the National Honor Society is the greatest honor bestowed upon students at Luther L. Wright High School. Nomination for membership serves as a stimulus for students to achieve a high degree of scholarship. It also encourages them to serve their school and community. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY PLEDGE I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this society to which I have been elected, striving every way by work and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and my life. Class of 1969 membership in the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is incomplete at the time of this writing. SEATED: S. Swanson, S. Mitchell, D. Forslund, F. Sokolowski, L. Murto. STANDING: R. Nurmi, G. Lucas. Moreover, the performances of the enterprising group have been highlighted during the half-time intermissions at the games. The enthusiasm of these musicians has done much to increase the school spirit of the student body. As in the past, the Band has performed classical and popular concerts to which the public was invited. The Band has also participated in a number of other activities including the musical Finian's Rainbow, the Homecoming Parade, the Memorial Day Parade, the annual R.O.T.C. Starting off with a relatively inexperienced team after the graduation of many seniors who had helped tie for the Michigan-Wisconsin Conference championship the previous season, the Devils once again tied for the conference championship. The only conference loss of the season was a heartbreaking 7-6 loss at the hands of the Hurley Midgets. In tieing for the Michigan-Wisconsin Conference crown for the second consecutive year, the Red Devils proved that they had a very sound defense and a potent offense. Although there were many standouts on both defense and offense, it was an overall team effort that gained the Red Devils the conference co-championship. 1968-69 Season Record IHS OPPONENT Overall Record Calumet 20 14 7 wins - 2 losses Iron Mountain 26 0 • Superior Cathedral 31 6 Conference Record • Hurley 6 7 4 wins - 1 loss • Bessemer 14 6 Menominee 0 20 ' • denotes M-W • Ashland 31 12 Conference game • Northwestern 39 0 • Wakefield IHS won by forfeit 92 Junior Varsity ROW 1; J.
