Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1968 volume:

We Dedicate This Book to Wayne Melchiori Mr. Melchiori. the boys’ physical education instructor at the Luther L. Wright High School, has held this position for the last nine years. Besides this, he is the head football coach, the head track coach, and the sponsor of the Pep Club. Before coming to Ironwood, he taught one year at Salina, Michigan, and two years at Dearborn, Michigan. He attended Miami University of Oxford, Ohio and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree. For all of his efforts toward the better physical fitness of our student body, we codedicate this book to him. Mrs. Palmer has taught girls’ physical education at Luther L. Wright High School and at the junior high schools for the past eight years. Along with this, she has taught girls’ physical education at Gogebic Community College for four years and has been the sponsor of the Girls’ Athletic Association. Before coming to Ironwood, Mrs. Palmer taught at Kaakauna, Wisconsin, Lynd, Minnesota, and Mabel, Minnesota. She attended Mankato State College at Mankato, Minnesota, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. For all of her efforts toward the better physical fitness of our student body, we codedicate this book to her. Darlene Palmer 3 Foreword We, the editors of the 1968 Hematite, have chosen “Trees” as our theme; for trees are like students. They have deep roots; they have branches extending in many directions. Their leaves absorb the energizing sunlight. Similarily, in life, knowledge must be put to work so that it may nourish all mankind. Many things have happened this year at I. H. S. Friendships were made. There were games and dances. Voices were hoarse after cheering our team on to victory. Everyone had his share of homework, tests, and semester exams. There were moments of success and failure for each of us. We have tried to put all these memories into this year's Hematite. As you turn the pages of this book, we hope you will find a memory on every page. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked so long and hard to make this yearbook possible. Co-Editors 4 FACULTY Board of Education SEATED: David Hjalmquist; Louis Miklesh, President; Alma Nelson, Secretary; Richard R. Rohde, Super intendent; William L. Johnson, President Pro-Tern. STANDING: Edwin Reini; Fred Dubbe, Treasurer; Bernard E. Larson, Attorney; George M. Kahara; Robert Baron. ABSENT: Elmer Mickelson, Ex-officio. Members of the Board of Education are elected by school voters for terms of four years. Their service to the schools of Ironwood is given without compensation. Responsibility rests with the Board of Education for determining all school policy, approving the selection of all staff members, the courses to be taught, and the instructional material to be used. The Board adopts and administers the annual budget. Many hours are spent by each member performing the duties for which he is elected. For their interest and efforts on behalf of the schools of Ironwood, we thank them. 6 SUPERINTENDENT Richard R. Rohde Principal It has been written that, As the twig is bent, the tree’s inclined.” It is my hope that this school may help all our students to grow straight and tall as the trees of the northern forest, without crooked trunks or twisted limbs to mar the symmetry of manhood's stature. Wright High School. Nomination for membership serves as a stimulus for students to achieve a high degree of scholarship. It also encourages them to serve their school and community. During initiation ceremonies in the spring, the ideals of the club are explained and the emblems displayed. Its symbol is a keystone and flaming torch. Its colors are gold and blue. Not more than 15° o of the senior class and 37o of the junior class may be selected as members in any one year. Mr. Lugviel is the sponsor for the Ironwood chapter of the N. H. S. PLEDGE OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this society to which 1 have been elected, striving every way by work and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and my life.” Class of 1968 membership in the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is incomplete at time of this writing. In August Coach Melchiori met a group of inexperienced prospects and by the end of the season had molded them into a team of confidence and poise. Throughout die year the Devils sported a staunch defense, which at the close of the grid slate was accented by a well-rounded offense built around a crushing running attack and a wide-open passing attack. With all things falling into place, the Big Red surged into a three-way tie for the M-W Conference championship.
