Take care that fleeting time does not find your mold ill made, or half undone, fit only for a product poorly shaped with little chance to build anew. James E. We, the co-editors of the 1960 Hematite, have attempted to get this year’s book out of the rut, by rearranging the activities to resemble a calendar of events. The Hematite is divided into four main sections: Faculty, Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each of the seasonal sections contains the class, the sports, and the appropriate activities for the specific season. These are arranged in chronological order, each having an individual layout pattern which is carried throughout the book. We sincerely hope that this annual will be a fond remembrance of your high school years. The association is limited to eight qualified members and five substitutes. The members, who are instructed by John Manchester, are chosen on the basis of scores fired. The P. T. S. A. is organized to bring together parents, teachers, and students in order to promote a better understanding between them. In the five years of its existence the P. T. S. A. has accomplished much. One of its projects is the scholarship fund established as a memorial to a former teacher, Ralph Spenser. Recipients of this scholarship are limited to graduates of our High School who desire to attend G. C. C. More important is the understanding, establishment of good will and cooperative action resulting from the voluntary meeting of parents, teachers, and students. P. Z.SJ. J. O’Donahue, S. Choir In room 205, third hour, you will find the mixed chorus hard at work on music for one of the four concerts they present annually. In the fall, strains from The Music Man and Rower Drum Song could be heard in the hall and most likely in all the rooms surrounding the choir room. Even before the Pop Concert was presented, the choir began to work on Christmas music. The girls' chorus presented The Nutcracker Suite as a part of the Christmas Concert, and the mixed chorus and girls’ glee club presented other Christmas music. 50 The Song of Easter was presented at the Easter Concert along with other sacred music of the Lenten season. Before the choir members had a chance to catch their breaths, they were frantically set to work memorizing the music for the Spring Concert, the theme of which was Spring Fever. To be eligible for membership, students must be in the upper third of their class in scholarship. They are also judged on their character, their service to the school and community, and their leadership ability. Not more than fifteen per cent of the senior class may be elected, and not more than five per cent of the junior class. After careful consideration of all the students' records in scholarship and citizenship, the faculty votes on the list of candidates. As the name indicates, the National Honor Society is a national organization. Its colors are blue and gold, and its emblem is the keystone and the flaming torch. The Ironwood chapter of this organization, Number 110, was organized in 1922. On April 13, 1959, ten seniors and eleven juniors were elected to the National Honor Society. The following seniors are the present members: Alfred Hansen, John Jacisin, Janice Johnson, Eric Kangas, Douglas Maki. Laveme Niemi, Jean Pavlovich, Karen Peterson. Charlene Rowe, Dick Sauter, Marie Turunen, and Paul Nopola, who is a transfer from the Ely, Minnesota, chapter to Ironwood. With this pledge the above students last year became members of the National Honor Society: I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this society to which I have been elected, striving in every way, by word and deed, to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. 66 SEATED: J.
