LARSON Finance Committee Building and Grounds Committee JOHN W. BEST, qChairmanj MEDRO IAFOLLA, fChairmanj WILLIAM E. WRIGHT LEO COLLINS HARRY ALLEN AL.BINO RIGONI Members of the Board of Education are elected by school voters for terms of four years. Their service to the schools of Ironwood is given without compensation. Responsibility rests with the Board of Education for determin- ing all school policy, approving the selection of all staff members, the courses to be taught, and the instruction- al material to be used. The Board adopts and administers the annual budget. Many hours are spent by each member performing the duties for which he is elected. We, the class of 1959, wish to express to the Board of Education our appreciation for all they have done to aid us in our school careers. We realize that there are many things which are their concern of which we may have little or no knowledge. For their interest and their efforts on behalf of the schools of Ironwood, we thank them. THE KEYHOLE This year the Keyhole, our school newspaper, is completing twenty-two years of reporting on school and community affairs. The Keyhole follows a basic layout pattern each month. On the first page are the feature articles consisting mainly of school functions and events, and an editorial. The next two pages are devoted to fashions, articles by the 'roving reporter, gossip and jokes. The last page is reserved for the sports events and the following month's schedule. Each year the Keyhole prepares a special Christmas issue containing articles on the meaning, spirit, and various customs of Christmas. This six page issue, primed in red ink and coming just before the holidays, is one of the most popular issues of the year. Through the efforts of the business staff, and by the sale of advertising space to the merchants of Ironwood. the paper is able to remain self-supporting. STUDENT The Executive Body of the Student Council is the governing body of our school. Each class is repre- sented by the president of their class and two elected members. The representatives for the senior and junior classes are elected in the spring of the preceding year, while the freshmen and sophomores elect their representatives in the fall. The primary responsibilities of the Student Council are the planning of pep assemblies, the selecting of commercial assemblies, the purchasing of records for school dances, and the ratifying of constitutions of newly formed organizations. Problems of the student body which are brought to the attention of the Student Council are clarified through discussion of possible corrective measures. Two of the annual projects sponsored by this organization are a Twirp season and homecoming, The annual parade, with floats entered by homerooms and clubs, followed by a pep rally and dance are highlights of the homecoming festivities. Working with the Executive Body of our Student Council, is a representative group made up of one elected person from each homeroom and club. The people develop qualities of self reliance, and self control by promoting citizenship and investigating the wishes expressed by our student body. The representative branch of the Student Council plays an important part in carrying out plans made by the Executive Body, during the course of the year. Regular meetings provide opportunities for informal social get-togethers and supplement the regular class work with information about Roman life and culture and the relation between Latin and English. The Latin Club entered a beautiful float in the Homecoming parade and also sponsored the fish pond at our annual All School Party. For Christmas the Latin Club members sing Latin versions of well-known English songs, such as White Christmas and Jingle Bells The Christmas story from the Bible is also read in Latin. Other special holidays are also observed by this active organization. -if-C-if The aim of the French Club, an organization of present French students and former French students, is to acquaint the members with the customs, songs and culture of France outside the classroom. The social activities develop an esprit de corps among the members and establish this with the extra curricular program of the school. The French Club , under the direction of Miss Tabacchi, began their activities this year with an entry in the Homecoming Parade. During the winter, the group again submitted an ice sculpture during snow week. Besides the annual initiation party, taking charge of the prom Check Your Wraps booth, candy sales, and the singing, the club sponsored several dances including the unique after four TV Bandstand dances. The Future Teachers of America, with Mr. Held as faculty advisor gives to students interested in any phase of teaching the opportunity to learn more about the profession. Members of the F.T.A. do cadet teaching in various grade schools and in the high school. This way they receive practical knowledge of teaching and are better enabled in planning their course of study. Each year the group makes several trips to various colleges near Ironwood. These experiences give the group's members a better under- standing and working knowledge of teacher training institutions. 4 The P.T. S.A. is organized to bring together the parents, teachers and students in order to form a closer relationship between the home and school and a better understanding between the teachers and stu- dents. Panel discussions and other projects are undertaken at the meetings which are held once a month. Working together in this way helps to make a better community. Our P.T.S.A. organization has accomplished much in its four years of existence. A scholarship fund has been established as a memorial to one of our former teachers, RALPH SPENCER. Plans are underway to enlarge the scholarship and to establish others. The Executive Board is composed of the President, Mrs. J. Bulinskig the first Vice-President, Mr. E. Their aim is to promote good will and friendship among the students. This club meets twice a month, having one business meeting and one social meeting. Rotating committees serve lunch and plan the entertainment for the group's monthly social meeting. At the end of the year the club uses the funds it has raised from candy sales and other projects to finance a trip for its members. Transportation is usually by car, and the destination, Duluth. After the sightseeing that takes up the larger part of the day, and after the excitement of doing some personal shopping, the girls treat themselves to a deluxe dinner. During the trip home memories are carefully filed away for future reference. I pledge my Head to clear thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to large service, and my Health to better living, for my Club, my Community, and my Country. This is the national pledge of the 4-H. Every 4-H'er awaits the annual 4-H Achievement Day, when everyone exhibits his projects, and when awards are given for out- standing work. Some of the projects undertaken are gardening, food preparation, food preservation, photography, junior leadership, sew- ing, child care, knitting, handicraft, dairying, and forestry. Dances parties, sleigh rides, and skating parties are other 4-H activities. The 4-H Service Club is, in a sense, the director of the 4-H Clubs This club is not a high school organization but is an organization of 4-H members who are 15 years of age or older and who have had three or more years of outstanding 4-H work, The advisors this year were Mr. Andrew Bednar and Miss Rhoda Kelly. 4-H CLUB ROW 1: J. This large organization, under the sponsorship of Mr. Betchek, is one of the busiest groups in school. At regular meetings new cheers are introduced to the members by the cheerleaders. Many of the Pep Club members purchase colorful sweat shirts with their emblem on the front to wear at games. The group works with the cheerleaders and the Student Council to put on general pep assemblies. They often include a few original skits as part of the assembly program. Buses are frequently chartered to transport members and non-members alike to out-of-town games. The Pep Club has proven its worth to the school in many ways, particularly in its desire to be of service. The officers for this year were Jackie Hariu, Presidentg Jerry Becker Vice-President: Marlene Cichon, Secretaryg Margie Haanpaa, Treasurer The purpose of the Girls'Ath1etic Association is to stimulate interest in girls'ath1etics and recreation- al activities. Glistening fish and starfish suspended from a false ceiling of nets along with an array of colored bubbles cast by a lighted chandelier set the exotic mood for a dreamy evening. In the Deep Blue Sea were found two gigantic whales, a sparkling octopus, treasure chests, an anchor, and seahorses. From a net-draped bandstand the orchestra played the theme song, Deep Blue Sea, for the Grand March. Queen Joanne Mattson and King Gene Belmas were crowned after the Grand March and reigned over the dance for the remainder of the evening. as X 1' . f I 0 Q 1, X i Welding is one of the most popular vocational courses for boys. Sing a song and smile all day long! This is the way sixty-two choir members feel after an invigorating song-fest, every day in room 205. ffhose who have classes in 305 and 203 during the third hour probably feel like singing toolj The singing is not all fun, but often hard work if the results are to be pleasing to the ear. A concert for every season of the school year plus many extra programs keeps the choir busy. Assemblies and civic performances always find the choir ready. Ensembles and soloists do much outside entertaining. The annual Pop Concert held in the fall revolved around show tunes from the newly produced South Pacific and the ever popular Carousel. Large crowds witnessed the concert both nights of the perform- ance. The many hours of rehearsal by both choir and Glee Club were apparent in the beauty of the pro- gram. Before the Pop Concert was over, the choir and Glee Club had already begun work on the Christmas concert. The highlight of this concert was the presentation of a choral pageant, Fred Waring's 'This is Christmas. It was sung by the Girls' A Cappella Choir, assisted by Miss Tabacchi's speech class who pantomimed the lyrics of the songs, which were originally taken from verses of Christmas cards. The program included regional songs and the traditional carols with the audience joining in. The annual sacred concert, held during the Lenten period, was the Brotherhood Concert. The choir rendered songs from every faith to point out the spirit of brotherhood in our free country. Again the Glee Club also participated. Hats, hats, and more hats! Hats of every kind, shape, and color, from cowboy to opera. You'd know all about them if you attended the Spring Concert, At the Drop of a Hat. Every song wore a new hat. The choir's calendar of events came to an end with the traditional performance at the Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises to which the choir added much dignity. The officers of the third hour choir are Larry Hopkins, Presidentg Percy Smith, Vice-President, June Mattson, Secretaryg Karen Peterson, Treasurer. The director, Miss Helen White, works very hard to make every performance a success. of J GIRLS GLEE CL UB ROW1 C Haggerson C Jacquart A Kovacevlch M Wynne D H111 M Humman V Sjowall E Bank S Peltonen ROW2 S Bentzen C Fredrickson P Tregembo M Mason M Dominkowskl K Krznanch D Bonk M Fuedman J Dalphonso ROW3 C Luther, S Hautamaki J Kangas J Osmanson D Perac chla M HOSk1l'1g E Hedstrom A Hoffman B Deal J. This year the band was composed of 79 members, along with six majorettes. The band participates in the Veterans Day Program, Memorial Day Program, the Spring Concert, and the Upper Peninsula Band Festival, as well as the school's football games. Mild weather enabled the band to prepare a number of shows, which were put on during the half-time of our home football games. Spirals, double spirals, block I, and double revolving wheel were a few of the figure formations mastered by our band. A pep band, usually consisting of about thirty members, plays at all the pep assemblies, as well as at each home basketball game adding much to the spirit and enthusiasm of the student body. On June 25, 1958, our band left for a wonderful three day trip to the dedication of the Mackinac Bridge. This trip was financed through funds raised by the band members during a chocolate selling campaign, and with the help of the school board, as well as generous contributions from various business- men. The band spent two nights at Camp Shaw and visited many tourist attractions on the way, in- cluding the Sault Locks. The band marched in the parade at St. Ignace to the tune of Anchors Aweigh and America the Beautiful. The day was windy, but the spirit and step of the band members was strong and firm. This event was a wonderful highlight of our high school years, an event which the band members will never forget. wg, ' ' -,, 1 wi. x 'fx 4 ' 5 W7 il Tv. 545:53 3 'QP X?
