Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1958 volume:

As long as there are mountains to climb there will be men who dare to meet their challenge. But too many others look for the easy path around the height. They are satisfied to travel only the smooth roads and never experience the exhilaration of standing on the mountain top, a conqueror. We need more mountaineers today among the young men and women who are traveling the trails toward an education. We need those who do not always seek the easier way and who relish the struggle toward a difficult goal. 2 James E. Mr. Kraemer was athletic director of our school since 1930, and the assistant principal for four years. He coached many championship teams during his years at Luther L. Wright High School confers no higher honor than membership in the National Honor Society, a society which gives recognition to those students who have most nearly attained the basic objectives of education: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Each year not more than fifteen per cent of the graduation class and five percent of the junior class are elected into this honorary group, whose blue and gold keystone and flaming torch remind its members to be faithful to the high ideals exemplified by its symbols and forever to follow the light of truth. On February 18, 1957, Alice Allender, Virginia Forslund, Ann Makela, Pat Saffron, Jane Lutey, Robert Manila, Sandra Schutte, William Rouse, Carol Gustafson, Shirley Johnson, and Russell Suomi were initiated into the Luther L. Wright branch of the National Honor Society. In an impressive candle-light ceremony the symbols, principles, obligations, and responsibilities of membership were explained, and the honored group pledged to pass the torch of honor unsullied to future members. To fulfill this task the initiates elected the following officers: Alice Allender, President; Virginia Forslund, Vice President; Ann Makela, Secretary; and Pat Saffron, Treasurer. In the February 25, 1958 initiation ceremonial, when thirteen seniors and fifteen juniors became members of the National Honor Society, the 1957 and 1958 initiates together with the Society's sponsor Miss Jennie Johnson repeated their pledge of allegiance: I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this Society to which I have been elected, striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. 64 First row: B. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club seeks to acquaint the members with various phases of Roman and Greek culture. Anniversaries of significant dates in ancient history are observed with special activities such as outside speakers, films, and slides which are used when available. The meetings are also enjoyed as social get-togethers. The Latin Club float, Ironwood Captures the Golden Fleece, won an Honorable Mention in the Homecoming Parade this year. A tin foil tree and lights, and of course, refreshments, were included in the club's annual Christmas program. In addition, gayly wrapped gifts were sent to the children at the State Hospital in Newberry. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS J This year, the members of the French Club began their flurry of activities with the preparation of their entry in the Homecoming Parade, a tall cocoanut tree perched atop a blue draped car with a dejected Maroon on Devil's Island. Later in the fall, the new French students were formally initiated in the club. The singing of French songs is one of the major aspects of the French Club. In December the songs, of course, were in the traditional Christmas spirit. Popular French songs were sung at a special spring session. As customary, the club participated in the All-School Party and was in charge of the Prom Check Your Wraps booth. With the coming of spring the members eagerly planned their banquet, featuring a French menu and a program of entertainment in French. In addition to these social functions the members held business meetings presided over by the following officers, under the direction of Miss Tabacchi: Jean Lutey, President; David Kauppi, Vice President; Karen Helgren, Secretary; Doris Mattila, Treasurer. DEBATE My colleague and I are pleased to be debating this vitally important question. We must take issue - - - These formal and rather stately courtesies heard in the halls of L. L. Wright in October mark the opening of debate season for Mr. Jacobson and his group which includes Ron Friedman and Don Dahlin, juniors, and veterans from last year's team which had presented the school with it first U. P. debate championship. A number of aspiring debaters soon discovered that debate's formality masks an intensive regime of research, speech, writing and revision of arguments from four to six every afternoon. This grueling pace reduced the group to a hard core of twelve. James Johnson, senior, and Robert Korpela, junior, made the varsity negative team and fell to the tender care of Mr. Thielen. The others constituted a promising reserve squad. Resolved: That direct U. S. economic aid to foreign nations be limited changed from a remote formal sentence to a matter of intense personal concern. The Marshall Plan, Mutual Aid, World Bank, became items of intense daily study and argument. L. L. W. was host to its first U. P. Practice Tournament, November 11, at which the team won all six varsity and five of seven reserve debates. The varsity won four of six debates in the tri-state competition at the Duluth Denfield Invitational Tournaments, November 23. At the second Practice Tournament at Escanaba, December 15, the varsity won all the preliminary rounds but lost the championship finals to Holy Name H. S. of Escanaba. This presented another substantial achievement although the traditional dinner at the Iron Inn seemed a little subdued, for, in addition to the second place trophy the team received the U. of Michigan Plaque, and Ron Friedman and Don Dahlin were awarded finalists' gold watches by the Detroit Free Press. Now Mr. Jacobson stops a student and remarks, Here's a good book on next year's subject. Read it! Take notes! Mr. Thielen pauses by a seat in study hall, There's a good article in 'US NEWS'. Read it! Take notes! After all, next October is coming closer every day. First rows J. Erickson, J. Bonk, B. Mason, L. Milavetz. Second row: J. Aili, L. Sher, C, Chapman, MR, HELD. C. Wallace, K, Voyce, J. MY FAIR LADY CHOIR CONCERTS THE KING AND I1 SENIOR BAND The color and enthusiasm of half-time, especially during football season, is due to the successful and outstanding performances of our band I Massed on the field, beating out a quick rhythm at the Upper Peninsula Band Festival at Escanaba, April 26, or playing beautiful music in formal concert appearances, the band is a well-drilled and impressive sight. The spirited marches, jazz, waltzes, and rhumbas make our band a versatile one. The pep band provides the music for the home basketball games filling our ears with catchy tunes, both popular and rhythmic. Individual groups and even soloists have lent their special talents at numerous gatherings. Ring one; P. Saffron, J. Lutey, J. Hantula, D. Ruby, J. Olson, D. Stiles, J. Johnson. Ring two: J. Carlson. ORCHESTRA The Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Baer, has worked hard this year to give the student body some wonderful entertainment. They have also appeared at the various grade schools and at the Grand View Hospital. Highlights of the year were: the Christmas program in which selected band members joined with the Orchestra to accompany the choir; the Chorus and Orchestra festival on April 19, held in Negaunee; the mass orchestra concerts held later in the evening; and the high school assemblies given in neighboring communities. A very instructive clinic was conducted for the orchestra members by the Stanley Quartet from the University of Michigan, in connection with the University of Michigan concert series. Not only has this group provided entertainment, but it also has served to stimulate interest in string instruments. The officers for the year included Art Jacquart, president; Margaret Zerbst, vice president; Gail Olson, secretary; Carol Stone, treasurer. O Glockenspiel! O Glockenspiel!
