Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1957 volume:

foreword I will study and prepare and maybe my chance will come, said young Abraham Lincoln. Study for him meant an eight-mile walk to the poor school which he could attend but a few months each year. But he did study and prepare. His chance came. He never changed his mind about the importance of an education and as president he said, The greatest enterprise upon which a nation can engage is the education of its citizens. Let us each try to capture the spirit and zeal of Lincoln in our own quest for an education. Let us be ever alert to our opportunities. Let us never be willing to settle for less than the best we can achieve. 2 ACTIVITIES - Page 81 ARTS - Page 107 SPORTS - Page 125 R.O.T.C. - Page 141 Zable of Contents FACULTY - Page 11 SENIORS - Page 20 UNDERGRADS - Page 59 SCHOOL LIFE - Page 73 Dedication To you, Mr. Miller, we, the class of 1957, wish to dedicate our annual because you have devoted so many years to help us make our school career a happy and profitable one. 4 Jh Menmiam We, the class of 1957, wish to pay tribute to the memory of Mr. Shirley Field, our friend and teacher, whose memory will always inspire us to do better things. 5 K. Their service to the schools of Ironwood is given without compensation. Responsibility rests with the Board of Education for determining all school policy, approving the selection of all the staff members, the courses to be taught, and the instructional materials to be used. The Board adopts and administers the annual budget. Many hours are spent by each member performing the duties for which he is elected. We, the members of the Senior Class of 1957, wish to express to the Board of Education our appreciation for all they have done to aid us in our school careers. We fully understand that there are many things that are their concern and of which we may have little or no knowledge. They elected the following as their officers: LeRoy Repischak, president; Maryanne Dear, vice president; Barbara Ann Johnson, secretary; Betty Kevern, treasurer; and Mary Ann Bednar, program chairman. On February 18, 1957, sixteen seniors and eleven juniors were elected to the society. At the induction assembly the president, LeRoy Repischak, gave an introductory speech in which he gave a brief history of the organization and explained the symbol and the colors. Election to the society is based on Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. To illustrate these qualities, Mary Ann Bednar spoke on character; Betty Kevern, scholarship; Barbara Ann Johnson, leadership; and Maryann Dear, service. The National Honor Society is a national organization for high schools. In 1922 the Ironwood chapter, Number 110 was organized. To be eligible for membership in this group, a student must be in the upper third of this class in scholarship and should have displayed outstanding character traits, leadership qualities, and service to his school and community. Not more than fifteen per cent of the senior class and five per cent of the junior class may be chosen as members in any one year. The colors of the society are blue and gold and the symbol is composed of the keystone and the flaming torch. 86 Rational Honor Society First row: B. D. Johnson, A. Kinnunen, C. Gustafson, K. In our school the procedure in electing new members begins with suggestions made by the faculty Honors Committee. This committee then requests nominations from other members of the faculty. Any teacher may recommend anyone whom he considers eligible. The committee then investigates all available records pertaining to the home room, class, study hall, and extracurricular activities of each student nominated. The list of those in the upper third of the class is examined carefully and each person considered as a possible member. The list of candidates selected is then presented in ballot form to be voted on. The committee again considers the mathematical results of the balloting and weighs other evidence that may affect the results. Those students receiving the highest total of points are recommended for election. Sometimes several meetings are held before final decisions are made. This year the National Honor Society sponsored the annual All-School Party to earn sufficient funds for scholarships to the Gogebric Community College. This is but one of the very worthwhile activities sponsored by this group. It is our hope that future members of this organization will actively promote and support the ideals and traditions, as well as the purposes, of this society. 87 Cat in Club Seated: M. For the first time in many years there are some students in third-year Latin, in addition to those in the usual two years of Latin. From the youngest freshman to the most dignified senior, they are all eager for learning and ready to take their part in whatever is going on. It might be interesting to note, also, that thirteen of the boys taking Latin are on the football eligibility list. Officers for this year are; Janet Nelson, president; Patricia George, vice president; Mary Elizabeth Oesleby, secretary; and Don Dahlin, treasurer. Miss Jennie Johnson is the faculty advisor. In their first project for the year the Latin Club carried off top honors, winning first place in their class (clubs and activities) and first place in the sweepstakes for the float, the Gladiators, entered in theHomecoming Parade for the Ironwood-Calumet game. Regular monthly meetings of the Latin Club will supplement the regular class work with as much information as possible about Roman and Greek life and culture and their contributions to modern civilization. There will be special observances of Christmas, Valentine's Day and other occasions, including Latin Week in April. 88 Debate Zeam The 1956-57 debate season was one of the most successful in the history of L. L. Wright High School. The L. L. Wright Debate Team won not only three-fourths of all the debates they participated in but also the Upper Peninsula Debate Championship in Class A. This was the first time our school has won the Upper Peninsula Championship. For these accomplishments the team received the Detroit Free Press Plaque and the University of Michigan Debate Trophy. The personnel of the debate squad consisted of Bob Duckstad, a senior with three years of experience; Bob Knutson and Randolph Jokipii, seniors, each with two years of experience; Don Dahlin and Ron Friedman, sophomores with two years of experience; Joe LaMarche, a senior who participated for the first time this year; and Ernest Kaven, a sophomore reserve debater who was also a newcomer to the squad. The teams were coached by Mr. Earl Jacobson and Mr. Ray Thielen of the English Department. The first rounds of debates were held at Iron Mountain on November 17. Our negative team consisting of Duckstad and Knutson made a very favorable impression on everyone by defeating the affirmative teams of Manistique, J. D. Pierce, and Gladstone. Our affirmative team consisting of Friedman and Dahlin defeated the negative team of Negaunee. Our affirmative team consisting of Jokipii and LaMarche were defeated by Crystal Falls and Manistique. The second rounds of debate were held at Holy Name High School of Escanaba on December 8. Our negative team defeated Bessemer and lost their only debate of the season to Kingsford by a very close margin. Our two affirmative teams, consisting of Friedman and Dahlin and Jokipii and LaMarche, respectively, defeated Iron Mountain and Negaunee. Ernest Kaven and David Stelmark, reserve debaters, also made the trip. On December 15, Ron Friedman and Don Dahlin were entered in the Invitational Debate Tournament at Merrill, Wisconsin. They defeated two formidable Wisconsin schools, Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls. This was the first time Ironwood had participated. Seated; D. Dahlin. R. Knutson, R. Jokipii, R Duckstad, R. Friedman. The National Athletic Scholarship Society was founded in 1925 by a group of high school principals who felt that the organization would foster high scholarship among boy students. It promotes the ideals of sportsmanship, stimulates a desire for well balanced training, encourages better citizenship and a high type of leadership among high school boy athletes. Boys are eligible for membership if they win one major letter or a letter in two minor sports. Their scholarship must be equal to or higher than the general average of the school for three consecutive semesters, and they must have exemplified the highest type of sportsmanship and citizenship. The faculty sponsor is Coach John Krznarich. 91 Executive Body of Student Council The Student Council had a very active and successful year under the leadership of the following officers: Dave Olgren, president: LeRoy Repischak, vice president; Maryanne Dear, secretary; Joan Stout, treasurer. Mr. John Sartoris acted as faculty advisor for the organization. The primary aim of the Student Council is the effective use of self-government by the student body. Each year, two representatives are elected from each class, and one representative from each homeroom, club, and organization. These representatives help promote the objectives of the students. It consists of 63 members, and the Girls' Glee Club has 32 members. Four big concerts are presented annually. The fall Pop Concert featured selections from Oklahoma and The Vagabond King with actions. The Song of Christmas was the high-light of the Christmas Concert. For the first time, the Range Symphonette joined in this program, and accompanied the choir in several numbers. The Easter Concert was again the annual sacred presentation of the Lenten season. The Spring Concert in May featured a wide selection of songs centered around the theme, It's a Big, Wide, Wonderful World. The choir also participated in school pep assemblies and numerous other functions. There were small ensembles which performed for many civic organizations. The last performances of the school year were the baccalaureate and commencement services. The officers of this year's choir were: Jerry Basso, president; Gene Belmas, vice president; Karen Nelson, secretary; and Dennie Gertz, treasurer. Officers of the Girls' Glee Club were: Jean Pavlovich, president; Linda Wright, vice president; Jane Stone, secretary; and Margaret Zerbst, treasurer. Ill Band Our hats are off to Mr. Stiles and his marching band. The band once again gained first place in the annual Logging Congress parade, held in Ironwood September 15, 1956. Precision marching to Roll of Honor and special step to Oh! You Beautiful Doll,” earned for them the results they surely deserve. Everyone will agree that the halftime performances put on by the band at the football games were really outstanding. The most spectacular performance occurred during the homecoming game with Calumet. The band came on the field by forming a huge X and while playing, formed the letters, U. S., followed by the formation of a shield. They then went into the traditional Horseshoe I, and concluded the program with a Big Ten Exit. November 7, 1956, was the date for this year's annual Pop Concert. Three soloists were featured: Carol Engebretsen, Phyllis Koski, and Jean Lutey. For the first time in many years the band attended the Upper Peninsula Band Festival held at Iron Mountain on April 13. There were fifteen schools participating in this festival. The climaxing event of the day was a massed band concert composed of a balanced instrumentation, represented by select members of all the participating bands. The band gave their whole-hearted support to all home basketball games by providing a pep band. This added pep to our games. The concluding activity was the Spring Concert presented by the Prep and Senior bands in May. Mr. Stiles' record of fine bands speaks for itself. It is organizations like this that make ours the fine school it is. So once again our hats go off to you, Mr. Stiles, for the splendid job you have done. I 12 Hand Seated: S. Dawson, B. Maki, J. The orchestra, one of our school’s younger organizations, has established itself as an enjoyable source of entertainment. They have gained valuable experience by appearing before various school assemblies. In the fall they were featured at the Homecoming assembly, where their rendition ofSiboney was a favorite with the student body. For the Christmas assembly, selected band members joined with the orchestra in a feature number and accompanied community singing. Throughout the year the orchestra furnished entertainment for many groups. They gave concerts at the various grade schools, not only for entertainment, but also to stimulate interest in string instruments. The orchestra also played for the patients at the Grand View Hospital. The highlights of the year were trips to Marquette, a performance in the Solo-Ensemble Festival on March 23, 1957, and on April 6 an appearance in the Upper Peninsula Orchestra-Chorus Festival. The club officers for the year are: Tom Sprasky, president; Carol Stone, vice president; Gail Olson, secretary; Judy Coxey, treasurer. We wish to congratulate Mr. Baer, the orchestra’s director, for providing us with top quality music. May they keep up their splendid work. 114 Prep Panel Row one: K. Pumala, E. Wills, G. Kivi, J. Pop Concert Christmas Concert Queen Karen King {Jim Set to the theme of Stairway to the Stars, happy couples danced dreamily from nine until one at the annual Junior Prom held April 28 in the gym of the Luther L. Wright High School. Silvery moons, twinkling stars, and a heaven of silver and blue balloons set the exotic mood of a dreamy evening. The mood was enchanted further by an illuminous stairway to the stars while the orchestra's strains flowed forth from the glittering setting of a brilliant comet. All of this beauty contributed greatly to the enchantment of a Stairway to the Stars. Queen Karen Koykar and King James Juntunen were crowned before the Grand March and reigned over the dance the rest of the evening. 117 Lo r tfwizw f Y Barbara Velin, Myra; Nancy 'Hedstrom, Elizabeth; Steve Thomas, Wyland; John Sheridan, Rutherford. Senior JCettemen Calvin Ballard - Kelly earned his first letter this year. He joined the team late, but was a real help once he got started. He played at either the halfback or fullback slot. Jerry Basso - Jer really kept the opposition on their toes with his accurate passing arm and smart play calling. He earned his second letter this year. Bill Beaudette - Bill” joined the squad late, but showed his aggressiveness as soon as he got into the game. He earned his first letter this year. Roy Cedarstrom - Bushel showed signs of being one of the greatest halfbacks Ironwood had seen in a long time until he was injured quite seriously in the second game. He is the only four-letter man on the team. Jim Juntunen - Junts, although slowed down by an ankle injury, was well known to opponents for his rugged offensive play. On defense, he was equally rugged at the end position and was outstanding as there were no long gains made around him. Junts received his second letter this year. Jim Kavinsky - Kovin was slowed down considerably by an injured knee, but showed he really was worthy of playing once he got into the game. He received his first letter this year. Brian Koponen - Kope earned his first letter this year. He was the smallest back, but, what he lacked in size, he more than made up for in courage and determination. Tony Longhini - Hoppers played either halfback or end during the season, doing equally well at both positions. He was one of the fastest men on the squad and he earned his second letter this year. Bob Luther - Bob was slowed down by a knee injury, but always went all out to win every game. He was a great performer and will be missed next year. Bob received his second letter this year. Clarence Maki - Sooks, although being one of the smallest linemen, showed that with his aggressive guard and linebacker play, size meant nothing. Sooks was rewarded by being elected the most valuable player on defense and co-captain of his team. He received his second letter this year. Paul Morris - Paulie earned his first letter this year. He was known by his opponents for his great pass catching. In every game he had two or three men defending him. Dave Olgren - Dave, one of the roughest ends on the range, was well known for his outstanding blocking and vicious tackling. He was equally dangerous as a pass receiver. He earned his second letter this year. Brian Perala - Black was one of the biggest linemen we had, and he really showed who was boss at tackle, both offensively and defensively. He received his second letter this year. LeRoy Repischak - Rep carried the brunt of the running attack. He was elected co-captain and most valuable player on offense by his teammates. Rep also received the Dr. Tashiro Trophy for being the most valuable all-around student and athlete. He earned his second letter this year. 129 football Zeam The Luther L. Wright Gridders ended their 1956 season with a 2-4-2 record. In the Michigan-Wisconsin Conference, they finished in third place with a 1 win, 2 loss mark. During the season, the Red Devils piled up 116 points to 137 for their opponents. The Red Devils' best game was played at Menominee in a traditional clash. The team completely dominated play in the second half over a squad rated second in the Upper Peninsula; but two would-be touchdown passes were dropped, and the Red Devils came out on the short end of a 27-14 score. Both are of eminent worth because they make for steadiness, speed, and accuracy. This year's team has had matches with several different schools, such as: Oklahoma Military Academy, Thomas Carr Howe High School of Indiana, Ashland Senior High of Kentucky, and many others. We might well be proud of the fine showing made against these schools by our Rifle Team. Sergeant Manning was the team instructor, John Bergquist was the manager, and William Luckhardt was chosen by his teammates as Captain. 147 A Judex Aaltonen, R. --- - 65 Aho, Diane -------- 63, 74, 98,113 A ho.
