WE, 5 L National Honor Society The highest scholastic honor which a student of the Luther L. Wright High School can attain is to be elected a member of the National Honor Society. This organization, as the name indicates , is a national one, with headquarters in the National Education Building in Washington, D. C. The Ironwood Chapter, Number 110, obtained its charter in 1922. The four cardinal principles upon which election to the National Honor Society is based are Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. In scholarship a student must be in the upper third of his class. Not more than fifteen per cent of the senior class may be elected, and not more than ten per cent of the junior class. Members are voted upon by the faculty after careful consideration has been given to all records both for scholarship and citizenship for all years in high school. ROW lx L. Nyman, M, Bednar, M. The keystone has for ages been the sym- bol of strength and perfection, since it fits into the top of the arch and holds the structure firmly together. Thus the keystone is the symbol of character. The flaming torch represents the light of knowledge, which is carried into the darkness of ignorance to enlighten the world. At the base of the keystone and on either side of the torch are the letters C, S, L, and S , the initial letters of the words Character, Service, Lead- ership, and Scholarship. Since 1953-54 pins containing these emblems have been presented to new members by the Ironwood Board of Education. The colors of the society are blue and gold. Each year scholarships to the Gogebic Community College are awarded to eligible members of the society by the Ironwood Chapter of the National Honor Society. PMN 1 like s-it lulvl i Hx? The Future Teachers of America The Future Teachers of America is an organization that gives students interested in any phase of teaching the opportunity to learn more about the profession. With Mr. Cook as its faculty advisor this year, the F. T. A. planned several trips to various colleges close to Jronwood. At the regular meetings, which were held twice monthly, the club was entertained by various speakers . A typical meeting would include a talk by someone qualified to discuss college entrance requirements , the advantages of the teaching profession, and many other things of interest to prospective members of the profession. A movie entitled Teaching was very helpful to all of us. The Signe Ruth Chapter of the Future Teachers of America had the following presiding as officers: President, JoAnn Colasaccop vice-president, Shirley Iohnson: secretary, Betsy Isaacson: treasurer, Vi.rginia Forslund. Choir With the opening of school in September, earnest and diligent practices began in pre- paration for the annual Pop concert. These rehearsals paid off in the concert given jointly with the high school band on the evening of November 3 . The Christmas concert, in' addition to a vivid portrayal of varied carols, included the Tschaikowsky Nutcracker Suite, told in song, story, pantomime, and dance. In March, the choir presented its Easter concert with the traditional featuring of negro spirituals in Fred Waring's Song of Easter. When spring rolled around, the annual spring concert was staged in May, with Peter Pan the main attraction in songs and in action on stage. The choir also appeared on Armistice Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, school assemblies , and for organizations of the community, including a full concert for the Iron- wood Woman's Club. Appearing throughout the year were several choral ensembles: the Senior Girls' Sext- ette, including Nancy Hedstrom, Barbara Velin, Sandy Wirtanen, Sue Preedstrom, Carol Woodcock, and Beverly Human: the Iunior Girls' Trio, including Maryanne Dear, Barbara Diane Johnson, and Dennie Gertz. In addition to servicing various clubs in need of musical numbers, the ensembles and soloists presented a lecture-concert of all-American folk tunes , popular songs, and modern serious compositions for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Accompanists throughout the year were Maryanne Dear and Betty Kevern. Miss White , the choir's director, has again developed an outstanding group. Much credit goes to Miss Tabacchi for her help in staging many of the songs presented by the choirs. Officers for the year were: President, Dave Rasmussen: secretary, Janet Gregory: treasurer, Barbara Velin. 9 Q . YET My 'L 215 fx I ky W., ,K Iw i V 1 Q Q ! fi?f L W if SLIS f r L Y 'ik I i A . Palm trees and soft lights added a South Sea effect to the theme. Sea gulls hovered over the boat: and a tropical garden, in which the orch- estra played, and Polynesian motifs bordering the sides of the room, contributed greatly to the enchantment of the evening. Queen Aileen Fafford and King Allan Kangas were crowned before the Grand March and reigned over the dance for the rest of the evening. X5 . Band The band was off to a good start this year by taking top honors in band marching com- petition at Houghton, Michigan. The street routine consisted of a passage from Stars and Stripes Forever, Tweedlee Dee, accompanied by a fancy step, and a short drill by the cornets and drums . The band kept a snappy cadence which resulted in a very effective street routine . Throughout the year the band did a very fine job in supporting our team at the football and basketball games. The full band showed its ability in some fine half-time performances on the football field, while a smaller group played for the pep assemblies and the basketball games. The annual Pop concert was a huge success with some snappy marches as its high- lights. The band, under the direction of Mr. E. G. Stiles, combined with the choir under the direction of Miss White , put on a very entertaining performance. The highlight of the year was the Band Clinic held at our high school on January 17, 1956. A number of bands from the area attended the clinic which was under the direction of Dr. William D. Revelli from the University of Michigan. In the evening the bands parti- cipated in a concert in which each band played two numbers, and in conclusion a massed band played a few numbers directed by Dr. Revelli. His help and constructive criticism were of great benefit to all the bands . We should like to congratulate Mr. Stiles for the wonderful job he has done with the band during the past year. 2 2' 0 'N X Orchestra SEATED: A. Iacquart, N. Fredrickson, C. Woodcocks, G, Olson, I. Not many runs were made through Andy's hole. He earned his second major letter this year. Russ Roberts: Leather Lungs was a top-notch, all-around lineman. No matter what line position he played, he proved himself worthy of the honor of wearing a Red Devil uniform. Russ earned his third major letter this year. Ed Shiffra: Edo proved himself to be a pretty rough customer on both offense and defense this year. Even though Ed finished the season with an injured knee , he hung right in there . Ed earned his first letterthis year. Dick Ulasich: Duggers was the biggest man on the team this year, and he used his weight to his advantage. Not many gains were made through the middle of the 'line when Dick was in there . He earned his third letter this year. Allan Kangas: Gunga really let the opposing team know who was the boss this year. On offense he played guard and on defense he played end. Any back thought twice before try- ing to run around Al's end . Dave West: Dave played left tackle on offense and right tackle on defense. He was very adept in running tackle around plays, and gained a lot of yardage for the Red Devils. Dave earned his second letter this year. Billy Maki: Billy really came into his own this year. A hard blocking, hard tackling lineman who could always be called on at any time to fill a tackle spot. Billy earned his first letter this year. Ioe Perlberg: Ioe did a good job of filling Dick Ulasich's shoes after Dick broke his hand in the Escanaba game. He helped. show the fans and the other teams that Ironwood's re- serves could handle a job as well as the regulars. Ioe earned his first letter this year. Iack Desotelle: Deso did exceptionally well in his play calling this year. His excellent ball handling and quick thinking pulled the Red Devils out of many tough spots . Iack earned his second letter this year. Larry Williams: Lar was our defensive halfback this year. Not many passes got past Larry: and on end runs , if the runner got past the line, Larry was always right in there to stop him. Larry earned his third letter this year. Iack Nelmark: lack was a transfer from Ewen High School this year, and even though all he had played was six-man football, he learned fast and proved himself invaluable on both offense and defense. Iack earned his first letter at Ironwood this year. Tony Martini: Sunjo was one of our most capable reserves this year. Even though he didn't see as much action as some of the other men, he really kept them on their toes if they wanted to keep their jobs. Tony earned his first letter this year. John Budnik: Iohnny couldn't finish the season this year because of an operation: but while he was here, he was one of the toughest, toughest boys on the team, even though he was the smallest. Iohnny earned his first letter this year. Tom Gill: Tomcat was one of the fastest men on the team this year. He played equally well on offense and defense. Tommy will be greatly missed next year. 'I Rifle Teams The aims of the Rifle Teams are to promote sportsmanship and marksmanship, both very worthwhile accomplishments because they make for steadiness, speed, and accuracy. The Rifle Teams have competed in several inter-school meets which have been very satisfactory. This year's Girls' Rifle Team was under the supervision of Sgt. Harris. The captains of the Girls' Rifle Team are: Fay Richards, Kathleen Ramuta, Nancy Torni, and Marilyn Nelmark. Sgt. Manning had charge of the Boys' Rifle Team. Bill Ludlow was chosen by his team- mates as captain.
