' 4ES! THE TIGER Published By The Seniors Of Luther Jackson High School Merrifield - Fairfax County, Virginia In the fleeting closing moments, of our High School career we pause for a moment to take a glimpse of some memorable events at Luther Jackson High School. In keeping with the modern trend in developing this annual, we will try to let the pictures tell the story and write as little as possible. The foregoing pictures will reflect our devotion and respect for our teachers, our parents, classmates, and to the many varied activities of our senior year. As you thumb through the Tiger of ’63 we hope that the activities and pictures will be more meaningful to you. You have contributed in many ways to the Luther Jackson program through participation in co-curricular activities and student organizations. The faculty and student body have been stimulated by your academic progress. I hope that you have gained much from your experiences at Luther Jackson High and that these experiences will benfit not only you but also your fellow men. There are heights you can attain with your training if you have a determination to achieve. It is up to you to achieve and be a credit to yourself, your parents, your school and your society. I believe if you were to consider the fact that you must not work only to make a living, but also for the joy of helping others, your reward will be more stimulating. I wish you the best of luck and a life of happiness. 6 wlPsiSs A vast world of know and unkown lies ahead of you, class of T 63; but whether known or unknown, it is a world of challenge, a world ready to yield the beauty and wonder of being alive if you are ready to live through service. MISS CAROLYN DEWITT, B.A. English Foreign Languages The study of a foreign language is both a progressive experience and a progressive acquisition of a skill. At no point can the experience be considered complete or the skill perfected. H. L. LAWSON, B.S., M.S. World Geography World History Social Studies Classes The social studies program helps students to acquire knowledge and skills essential for good citizenship, as well as attitudes which lead to sound democratic behavior. It seeks to develop in each student an appreciation of our American heritage. A balanced emphasis is placed on the Common good and the individual good and on both the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Science In a democracy like ours it is particularly important that people as a whole should so far as possible understand the aims and achieve¬ ments of Modern Science, not only because of the value of such knowledge to themselves but because research directly or indirectly depends upon popular appreciation of its meth¬ ods. MR. EUGENE SKINNER, B.S. Science The specialist is likewise a layman in every science except his own and he, too, needs to have new things explained to him in non-technical language. Sci¬ entific Progress is so rapid and revolutionary these days that no one can keep up with it without some means of keeping in close contact with its new ideas and discoveries. Learning is conducted in classroom-laboratory situa¬ tions which provide opportu¬ nities for individual and group instruction, investigation, and experimentation. MR. DEAN HARRIS, B.S. Science MISS VIRGINIA MAJOR, B.S. Science To the left is a physical science class and below is an Earth science class. Physical Science deals pri- marly with energy and the laws that govern it.
