THE 1962 TIGER LUTHER JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL MERRIFIELD, VIRGINIA FAIRFAX COUNTY EDITED BY THE CLASS OF 1962 m. m ■ ■ • 9 $ m - V ■ ■ 4 m ■ mtm Edward N. Bell was a man of rare afadlmic and athletic taints, with a genuine like lor people. This quality won for him the idh iration of H| orkers and students alike . . . His rugged physique belied his gentle nature. He was Sf MEWJp ' i teacher and believed that he, like all other teachers, had as one of his responsibiliti ispiration of all youth with who he had contact. This idea was a carry q er from his youth. Although he is no longer with us, in life, he will be long remembered for his cheerfulness, good humor and dedication to his profession. 2 FOREWORD Now that we are leaving the sacred halls of our alma mater, we feel secure in the realization that we are prepared for the challenges we will face. We cordially invite you, our readers, to explore with us some of our most meaningful experiences and activities; they have offered us excellent training, inspirational guidance and spiritual enrichment. 3 The editor of the 1962 edition of THE TIGER promises enjoyment to all of its readers. We publish this production with points of interest to fit all per¬ sonalities . As you turn the pages you will relive with us many happy moments, many spectacular occasions and evidence of beautifully packed years of development, learning and sharing. THE TIGER is a pictorial portrayal of moments of gaiety, of effort, of chal¬ lenging experiences and a guidance under the direction of a faculty that gave unstintingly to help shape our lives for the new world. Memories are made of this Yearbook Editor As President of the Senior class, I would like to acknowledge that we, the members of the graduating class of 62, are truly appreciative for the devotion, tolerance, understanding, and guidance bestowed upon us. Through our years of learning at this institution, our ideals have been shaped by your hands of knowledge. You have created in us a desire for higher education; an ambition to reach higher, and higher toward the goal of eternal knowledge. We truly in¬ debted to you, the members of the Luther Jackson Faculty, for giving us such ideals. We hope you will be proud of us in the future as we will strive to be¬ come the leaders in the world tomorrow. 4 Class President ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS OF THE CLASS OF 1962: Through the years, I have been afforded the privilege of observing you as you developed physically, mentally and morally. I now find myself with mixed emotions, for you must now go out into the world and find your place in a challenging society. I am proud to have played a small part in your preparation for life. Congratulations for the accom¬ plishments you have made. I hope you will use your past experiences to build a successful and happy life marked by unselfishness, loyalty and respect for others. Remember that no person is ever honored for what he receives; honor is the reward for what you give. 6 TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1962: I cannot, in words, express how indebted I am to you for my having been associated with you for the past five years. The experiences shared with you will afford me many enjoyable reflective hours. To you and your sponsors, I offer my congratulations for your many accomplishments and the production of this very fine annual. I sincerely hope that your association with us has engendered in you a greater mental, physical, and spiritual en richment, and that we have inspired you to aim high, moving forever forward to fill your little niche in society to the very best of your ability. I earnestly hope that God will be forever good to you and that your fondest dreams will come true. Life is queer, with twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won if he ' d stuck it out Stick to your task, though the pace seems slow You may succeed with one more blow. Sincerely, Assistant Principal of Administration 7 TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1962: I am humbly grateful for this opportunity to contribute to this symbolic record of your aspirations. I shall always cherish the mem¬ ories of working with you and watching you develop into a well knit serious minded group of mature students. Your mature development has reflected itself in your learning to understand and respect the thinking and moods of others; in your development of a sense of curi.- osity that enables you to observe in order to build a stock of useful knowledge from which you may ever draw your pursuit of worthy endeavors. In your quest of knowledge always remember, There is nothing beautiful but truth. Assistant Principal of Instruction 8 SENIORS CLARANETTA BARNES Track . . . N.H.A. CORNELIUS WALTER BROWN, JR.
