Class History The five years we have spent at Luther Jackson have come to an end. Only a short time ago we were eighth-graders looking with apprehension and hesitation toward the years ahead of us. Today, in reality, we have accomplished our aim - the completion of high school. September of 1954, a great excitement took place in the lives of the 138 bewildered and frustrated 8th grade students of Luther Jackson High. On the opening of school, we were asked to assemble in the auditorium where we listened to a welcome and a pep talk; then our names were called by different teachers who were to be our homeroom sponsors. The newness soon wore off and we were back to hard work - core and ex¬ ploratory courses. During the eighth grade year many of us were able to participate in numerous activities because of the newness of the school. Among the activities in which we participated were band, choir, and patrol. In the ninth grade many changes took place in our school lives. The class schedule of fifty-five minutes gave us much concern at first, but we finally found ourselves moving along with the more experienced members of the school. We participated in many of the activities and excelled in some, but our greatest ordeal was to try to live down the idea of being freshmen. The Sophomore year finally arrived with some new faces and many disappointments in not seeing all of our old friends and classmates of the previous years, but as time passed we made new friends and tried to cultivate stronger ties with many of our old ones. This year also brought out many of the latent talents and ambitions of our class. In the athletic world James Edgerton and Tracy Newman participated in football; in baseball Albert Brown, Tracy Newman, Joe Brown, James Edgerton, Robert Brooks, and Richard Washington; in basketball many boys made the Junior Varsity team. On the Girls’ Basketball Team we found Bertha Thornton, Joan Smith, Rose Rector, Norma Jackson and Judy Hudson. In the academic world we also made some achievements. Bessie Summers won first place in the District Chemistry Quiz; Earnestine Williams became our N. H. A. Represen¬ tative to the Virginia State conference, and Alvin Thomas participated in the State Science and Math conference. The Junior year arrived with the enrollment of 35 boys and 35 girls. This year proved to be quite fruitful with greater emphasis on study and school life. The great¬ est event of the year was the preparation and sponsoring of the Junior-Senior Prom. The final year of high school began September 6, 1958 with an enrollment of 27 boys and 24 girls. Of this number, 24 of the boys began with the original 8th grade class of 70, and 19 of the girls enrolled were of the beginning class of 68. In this annual can be found many of the outstanding activities and achievements of the Senior Class. May the few things said and done here be ever memorable in the hearts and minds of this graduating class, and may they be stepping stones to greater things in life.
