For us aT LuTher SouTh and Tor all The young people who have aTTencled LuTheran high schools in Chi- cago during The pasT halT cenTury, The meeTing was an hisToric one, Tor aT This Time iT was deTermined To begin LuTheran secondary educaTion in This area. The Tollowing Two years were Tilled wiTh end- less hours oT planning - planning which, by The grace oT God, resulTed in The opening oT LuTher lnsTiTuTe on April I4, l909. One Tloor oT FirsT Immanuel LuTheran School, ll35 S. MarshTield, was large enough Tor The sixTy-six sTudenTs and Two TaculTy members, Mr. W, C. T-lerrman and Mr. David Chase. This modesT beginning was expanded already during The TirsT summer wiTh The addiTion oT The commercial course. The populariTy oT This sTep is evidenT Trom The immediaTe opening oT an evening school, enrollmenT I8, in addiTion To The regular academic deparTmenT, The Tollowing SepTember. By I9I2 LuTher lnsTiTuTe was well esTablished wiTh Tour separaTe deparTmenTs: preparaTory, aca- demic, commercial, and shorThand and Typing.
