For the production, the gymnasium-auditorium of Bethel Lutheran Church was rented. As the house- lights dimmed, the curtains opened on the comed , We Shook the Family Tree . Starring in the lead role was Roberta Triegle. In the supporting cast were Bruce Wachholz and ,Ioan Temple as her parents, along with her sister Carole Maier, and brothers George Lux and Bud Watters. Others in the cast were Bill Ernst as the business associate and his family Ruth Wittmer, and Ralph Klein. In other supporting roles were Edith Koltermann, Janet Gaus, and Betty Zenker. Who of the cast will forget the evenings spent at practice under the pa- tient direction of Mrs. Wager? And finally -- the big night! As entertainnent the dramatization was a huge success. Surely it will not be quickly forgotten by those who had the opportunity of participating in this presentation. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council was elected by the student body and met every week to discuss student problems. lt has constantly worked for a better rela- tionship between faculty and student body. This was one of our most im- portant organizations, as it thought up many ways of improving our school life and presented many ingenious ways of raising money for our school. Hall guards kept the between-class traffic in order, and kept students from roaming in the halls during classes. ln order to improve attendance at basketball games, they held score guessing contests with a ball point pen as a prize. A suggestion box was placed in the hall in which students could drop any of their suggestions. Some of the Council's money raising proiects were: selling of Christmas cards, the Curtis Campaign, and the sale of school stationery. When the completion fund drive for our school started with its motto, A Million or More in '54, the Student Council decided that the students could raise that amount lin pennies, that isl. A big vote of thanks goes to our Student Council of i953-l954. 1 Q 1 J' ,.. During this time it has established a procedure for better worship in our chapel services through the use of recordings, satisfactory seating arrangements, and ushers. An active organization at Luther, the Music Club has taken numerous field trips this year. They have seen the operas Carmen and Aida , the Chicago Theater ofthe Air , and a Sadler and Well's Ballet. At regular meetings they listened to records of the masters' great works. Their aim has been not only to hear good music, but to study the men and motives behind it. PROJECTORS CLUB PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB :fi 3, wr, Even though all students aren't members of this unique organization, yet almost all profit by its work. It is an important part of the audio- visual department in our school, for the members obtain the films, in addition to showing them to the many classes. The members of the club are also schooled in the mechanism and operation of the motion- picture projector. As the name implies, the members of the club have learned many of the technicalities of picture-taking. With the club's membership as small as it was, the group's activities were mainly confined to the perfectioning of indoor flash photos. To revise a little, the members ofthe travel club could well say, All the city is a stage, and we are actors who walk across it. That is exactly what this club has done, it took a walking tour of Chicago, especially the Loop, near North Side, and the more important office buildings downtown. The group has also gone to Ryan's Woods to examine its geological rock formations, a lecture on the Far East was presented by Mr. Thomas Schramm's brother, Mr. Bill Schramm. This age courtesy of Arthur P. Young, Funeral Dire: 8210 auth Racine Avenue TRiangle 4-80' The main event of the Latin Club this year was the Roman Banquet held on March 23. To this occasion were invited the Latin clubs and classes of Luther North. The efforts of the members were well re- warded, as the evening was a real success. The club, earlier in the year, went to see The Robe and Julius Caesar. The members also made up Latin crossword puzzles which were submitted for publi- cation to Scholastic Magazine. Being our foreign relations agents in the Latin American countries, each constituent of this organization reports on his countries' activi- ties and history at a specified meeting. Thus all members are kept abreast of happenings in the Southern Hemisphere. The club also sold roses on Pan-American Day, with profits going to the penny drive. A iaunt to the Museum of Science and Industry to view a Spanish play depicting Christmas in Spanish-speaking lands concluded the year's activities. At regular meetings scientific demonstrations were often held. In addition, members saw numerous filmstrips, all related to some field of science. Some of the more popular were, Styling the Motor Car , Harnessed Lightning , a story of iet aircraft, and Unfinished Rainbow , the story of alu- minum. Coordinator of the group's activities was Mr. Israel, who also served as the club's sponsor and advisor. Although it had a small beginning at Luther, the Lettermen's Club has grown considerably. As the name implies, one must have a maior letter in order to gain admission into the organization. Perhaps the most remembered event this past year was the initiation to which all new members were submitted. If the new members continue the club in the same spirit with which they passed through the initiation, the future of this organization indeed looks bright. W in-. Through the winter, bowling and ' ' ' tumbling captured the girls' interest, but with the advent of Spring and warmer weather, they took to the outdoor basketball court. This year the Private School League witnessed the addition of another school to its ranks: Luther South. Although the Braves were not title contenders, they made a fine showing for their first year on the gridiron. The record which our team showed at the end of the season was two games won, and four games lost in League competition, besides the practice game with Racine Lutheran which the Braves also dropped. Coach Schramm expects that next year the team will do considerably better due to the fact that the boys will have had a bit more experience than they had this year. FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL A fresh-soph team was also put into action at Luther this year. Under the coaching of Mr. Hotlen, this team's final record at the end of the season was a bit more enviable than that of the varsity, showing two vic- tories and only one de- feat.A number of players will be lost to the varsity next fall, but it is ex- pected that promising re- cruits will fill the va- cancies. g I 3? wife kk XL. Within the span of two short years, the Braves have risen from obscurity in the Private School League to take their place as one of the best in the League. They were one of its leading contenders for the crown, but had to be satisfied with second place. Under Coach Dinkmeyer's direc- tion, the team has improved tremendously over the past two years. The boys gave evidence of their superior teamwork when they handed a loss to U. High by l point. On the other hand, they reached their low ebb at the Parker game. With a holdover of five players, plus the boys coming up from the fresh- soph, the team should be able to come up as title contenders again next season. r -A . vu if 1 1, , . xg. Although they came out on the short end, their games were thrilling, and they were often defeated by the smallest of margins. Most of the boys were new, but with experience comes achieve- ment, so that the returning freshmen, along with incoming players, are looking forward next year to a much better season. f I xv .P s xi X, 6, H 'l , as , X it iff E ' x ,X zz, X , r t.
