HALSEY GULICK, Directors Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire 5 r F 2 5 2 Za iz .joreworcl The other day Dottie and I flew upto camp. It was the first time we had been back since camp closed, and we looked forward to the trip with a great deal of joy. We have always felt that camp is our real home. As we circled camp, wefcould see 'Dave and Charlie waving to us from the rocks. They have been working 'all fall, getting the boats in readiness for next summer, repairing the docks, building new tables and benches, stain- ing some of the buildings, getting the ice houses ready for ice this winter, and doing many other jobs. I-t was good' to see camp. There was the same view from the dining room, the water is just as clear, the- rocks are as interesting as ever, Sen- halone is just as cozy - but as we walked through camp there was a lone- liness, a strange silence. There was no piano playing on the tennis court, the dock was empty, there were no hammering sounds from White Moun- -tain, no calling' from the dock or the lake.. There were no sailboats in the cove, the paths were empty, and there were no pleasant smells coming from the kitchen. We ,always think of camp as we leave it, and there is bound to be some disappointment when we find things changed. The place was the same, but it came 'to us, more forcefully than ever before, that the place is just a shell, a background for the real and vital part of camp, the campers and the counselors. . As you look through this book, you will be reminded of the place, but your real joy will come from seeing the faces of the people you knew, and finding their names in the address list and among .those who won honors. Dottie and I hope you will enjoy it, and that it will bring back the memory of our happy times together. If you should pick it up, live, ten, fifteen or twenty years from now, 1 hope it will still bring back memories, and that it may remind you to keep in touch with us. We always want to know what our campers are doing. ' ' HALs1sY TN, RHYMQNK- caps. if.izi.1..i. Our camp is an expression of a vision that grew out of years of con- structive imagination and faith. There were certain things that we believed girls loved and would be better women for having had.. - Our WOHELO BIRD is a symbol of the dream-and hopes with which we worked. When we give a girl a Wohelo Bird to wear onher sweater it indicates that she is an ideal Wohelo Girl, because she is attaining physical perfection and mental balance. She understands the importance of physical control and is a master of her body. She is loyal to herself and to her com- munity. She' is able to live with other people, recognizing and respecting differences in personality. She knows how to work with other peopleg she has learned teamwork. Her judgment is steady and dependable. Her spirit is kindly and she can be counted upon at all times, whether things are going well or badly, and she is full of the love of doing things, and she sees the humorous side of life. We admire serious girlsg but we adore girls brimming over with the joy of being alive. It is a sacred responsibility to -own a Wohelo Bird. Those two things, together with the hard work of Vic and the waterfront counselors, helped make this past summer an outstanding one in and on the water. Everyone of you could swim, and we cannot remember a summer when so many. passed Red Cross and camp swimming tests. You will iind a list of the swimming and sailing honors below. What a fine record! D Swimming and water honors are not all we remember about this surn- mer. You will see a long list of camp craft honors too. Ted's garden did well in spite of the dry weather. t We had some of the beans and tomatoes after you had gone home. The marionettes were even better than. usual. The dancing exhibition was exceptionally good. It was a great sight to see the whole camp coming in for the Maypole Festival. The tennis tourna- ment showed that many of you had learned a lot about playing. Mfhat beautiful things you made over at the Red Cottage with Jeanne and Chippy! And the plays at Frogs' Frolic were very well done. Then there were other things that We all remember so well. How many turns do you suppose the merry-goround made, loaded down with laughing girls? Was the jungle gym ever free from climbers? YVe will not forget the tow to Bear Beach, and we shall remember the camping trips to jordan Bay and Wohelo Island. We can still taste all the good food that Cookie worked so hard on in the kitchen. Yes, the summer of 1947 was a memorable one. Most of all we like to think of the new friends we made and of the old friends we saw again after the long winter. It is great fun 'to think of the good times of this last suin- mer and to look forward to being at camp again next year to go on from where we left off this year. I 0g:f , 2046 4 We like to remember the Fire Spirits at our Frogs' Frolics and to think of what 'they stand for. They represent three qualities that we value highly in campers and are chosen each week by vote of the counselors. The hist quality is ENTHUSIASM - the girl who loves camp, enters into all camp activities with eagerness, enjoys her fellow campers, is a leader. The second qlualitiylis COOPERATION - the girl who does what she is asked to do C CCT 11 IY, quickly, and well. The third quality is THOUGHTFULNESS -FE-hthe girl who thinks of nice things to do for other people, who is unselhsh e QUEEN represents all three of these qualities and is the outstanding camper of the week. it Here are the names of the 1947 Fire Spirits: FIRST FROGS' Queen: Nancy Harrington Enthusaism: Sally Rogers Honorable Mention: Mary Woolvgl-ton Cooperation: Martha Roland Honorable Mention: Pe M 1 Thoughtfulness: Stephanie iflgglgceolgs Honorable Mention: Christine Loizcaux FROLIC JULY 12, l947 SECOND FROGS' FROLIC JULY 19 1947 Queen: Martha Roland Enthusiasm: Wendy Allen Honorable Mention: Lisa Macready Cooperation: Joan Cole Honorable Mention: Margaret Sanderson Thoughtfulness: Susan Trefethen . Because of the intangible nature of their gains, some of the boys who profited most from, and who contributed much to the summer of 1947 are no-t here listed. Seventeen non-swimmers passed 'their twenty-five yard test, a lasting accompllshment which is not mentioned under awards. Many shot a rifle, slept out-of-doors, worked in a shop, sailed, and paddled a canoe for the first time. These are things to be enjoyed throughout a lifetime, although you may never receive a prize for your accomplishments. Still more boys learned to live a friendly, secure life under rough, outdoor conditions in close contact with many others. This may have been the most valuable and the most lasting experience of the entire summer. Even though our competition with other camps was not extensive, we can all remember with pride the record of the Rifle Team which completed its second straight year without a defeat, thanks to Bo-b and Bruce and a lot of good shots. .The Swimming Team also enjoyed an undefeated season, culminating in its victory at the Hawthorne invitation meet. You will all be interested in the record: Timanous 57 Agawam 25 Timanous 41 Hawthorne 37 Timanous 51 Ranger Lodge 22 Timanous 875 Average opponent's score in Hawthorne meet - 22 To George and his helpers and to all team members from age eight to fourteen go congratulations and the satisfaction of winning while maintain- ing 'the highest standards of sportsmanship. The sailing crews and the baseball and softball teams have many exciting moments to remember. Few of us, I dare say, have forgotten the hot afternoon when Lugo and Sully had their pitching duel in the series final. ' 0 I hope all of us will remember the assemblies with Wohelo when We tried to outsmg each other, the Council Fires and our silent cheers when some deserving boy received his award, the church services under the tall p1.nes.overlooking the cove, the evening tows on the quiet lake, the Banquet with Its Cheers and Clapping: but most of all I hope we will remember the f1'1CI1dS W6 made among campers and staff, the men and boys we will know for many years to come. Marti joins in sending our very best wishes to you all. It was certainly a grand summer. A - JOHNNY Jrallof game GTCGICSI I7npl'OU6171,6Tl.l' . . . ..... , , , PHIL WATERMAN Best junior Camper .....
