With this golden memento you will be able to keep your friends forever. This is our gift to you, treasure it forever. His entire life was devoted to the highest degree of education for all boys and girls in the state of Virginia. We are placing a copy in our school library, and asking that a copy be placed in the library among his memoirs, at Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia. Senior Class 1970 4 ADMINISTRA TION A Message From The Principal You are taking your places in the world at a time when there is a great intellectual, religious, and moral ferment. You will have to find your way in a complicated, but great civilization, and under varied institutions of freedom, the most perfect the world has ever known. We are asking you to take advantage of the great ballooning of opportunities for young Americans today. Our world has suddenly become a small world, and we have, by no means, reached the peak of our destructive capacity. The unrest that is so dominant in today’s world is representative of people everywhere who want to have their places in the sun. We trust that the training which you have received here will enable you to appreciate your unusual opportunities and will make you sensitive to your obligations to your fellowman. Men and women with a thirst for knowledge will turn to you for light, and others who have no convictions of their own, and who do not know their own sentiments until they have heard them expressed by someone else, will seek you for guidance. Your teachers and I are conscious of the problems and difficulties that confront you and will be glad to assist you in any way that we can. We trust that as you go forward, you will carry with you an abiding interest in your Alma Mater, that you will remember her in your prayers and will constantly work and live so as to reflect her noble instruction in your characters. We shall always be happy to have you visit progress and your problems. , or wjite us, and let us know of your A. B. Cousins, Principal 5 6 Knowing that all of you are very enthusiatic because you have reached the goal for which you were striving, we congratulate you. Realizing that this is not the end, you must assume the responsibility to look forward to greater achievements if you work diligently. If you desire to be successful, you must have faith in God, and have faith in yourself — believing “He can who thinks he can.” Don’t become discouraged when problems seem very difficult to solve; learn to specialize in what others may call “The Impossible.” We sincerely hope that the knowledge that you have acquired here will pay rich dividends in the future because educational opportunities are increasing; therefore, you must prepare to avail yourselves of these opportunites. Now is the time to prepare for the future so that your hopes and dreams may become realities. In your continued quest for knowledge, you may find peace and understanding. 7 Signed... Mx. Xt. X. Luther H. Foster High School set in the harbor awaiting our arrival. This ship has carried many to the harbors of higher education. Many persons were there to greet us and advise us, but the voyage was ours and only we could complete it. For most of us, our first year was full of joys and pleasures. Those who didn’t enjoy exciting and challenging adventures were tossed into the seas of became sea-sick when high tides and waves made the seas rough. With the help of others, they were able to overcome and continue along with us. Many times, we were tempted to throw our most valuable possessions over board, but with faith and help from our parents, sponsors, and principal, we were able to turn back in the right direction. Marie Bowler was a contestant for May Queen; she won for our pre-freshmen class. We entered our freshmen year. As freshmen, we participated in various activities and clubs. The activities and clubs helped to ease the rough seas, especially, when it was meeting time. During our Sophomore year, James Rowe won second place in public speaking. This conference was held at Longwood College. From there, he participated in the National Region of Public Speaking which was held in Richmond, Virginia. Other members of our class participated in the Math and Science Conference at West End High School in Clarksville, Virginia. During our Junior year, six of our shipmates were elected into the Elite Chapter of the National Honor Society. They were Diane Johnson, Bertie Robertson, Pauline Fowlkes, Phyllis King, James Rowe and Clifton Hawkes. We presented a dynamic talent show in the auditorium of the ship; this was a great success. It contributed greatly to the expense needed to leave the ship to go to the small island called the “Blackstone Community Center” where we presented our Prom. The theme was “Shower of Stars.” On September 2, 1969, only seventy-two of our shipmates were left to continue our complete voyage. We are Seniors now, and most of us see the shore. Many thanks go to our parents, sponsors, principal, and class officers. We will always remember the ship, Luther H. Foster High School, and the struggles we had on the voyage. It is now our responsibility to drown, swim or ride the ship to success. We are planning to anchor on the shore of success. 29 Class Prophecy It is the year 2001. As we gaze into the crystal ball, we begin to get a better view. The people and the places are becoming clearer now. We, the famous Spirits; John Davis, Elaine Stewart, Evelyn Wilson, and Nancy Vaughan are seeing the future before us in our mighty Crystal Ball. As the fog clears away, we see Charles Lambert, and Edward Pritchett as Private Engineers to our President of the United States, Clifton Hawkes. As we look on, we see Lee Parker drilling for water. Rutherford Vaughan and Thomas Harris were drilling on an enormous structure which is to be the Sport’s Hall of Fame, which will have the pictures of Pro-Football players, Leslie Woodson, Phillip Warren, Frank Robertson, Garland Wells and Lloyd Green. Suddenly we see Robert Stokes, driving a 2001 Computer car, designed by the famous auto salesman, Thomas Tabon. John Davis, then noticed a billboard with pictures of Barbara Jones, and Diana Johnson who were to model fashions designed by the famous designer, Gloria Venable. Looking further, we see the spaceswingers, featuring John Davis, Elaine Stewart, Lorenzo Morgan, and Rosa Pettis singing their top hit, “Whatever Happened to James Brown.” Their private beautician is Martha Thompson and barber, Jairus Oliver. Opps!!!, cloudy again, but wait! We now see a large underground duplex of business spooks, Carolyn Hobbs, Evelyn Wilson, Herbert Maddux, Howard Marshall and Kenneth Harris. Their competitors are executives in the twenty billion dollar CDSEC (Computer Data Scientific Electronic Company) which are Nancy Branch, Marie Bowler, Linda Hurt, Barbara Nunnally, Mary Sue Hawkes, Barbara Fowlkes, Connie Johnson, Bertie Robertson, and Mazie Campbell. We also see the Watson Technological Center of Surgery. Chief Surgeon and Founder, Bernice Watson and her assistants, Joyce Green and George Fowlkes were transplanting a liquid heart in Ruby Hicks. The nurses within this hospital were: Mary Jackson, Lillian Blackwell, Beverly Fitzgerald, Beverly Johnson and Nancy Vaughan. Due to the fact that there was a failure in the operation, the patient died and our famous undertaker, Rudolph Hawkes and his assistants Mary Hatchett, and Richard Fowlkes appeared on the scene after sitting impatiently in the waiting room. On the sixth floor, our outstanding dentist, Morris Lee, was pulling Mae Helen Johnson’s wisdom tooth. The letter “M” appears. Now we see it, Moser University. There’s Dr. James Rowe, newly elected president, with his staff members. There were Rose Allen and Robert Vaughter representing the Math Department, Doris Hobbs and Ruth Coleman, French instructors; Pauline Fowlkes, librarian; Phyllis King, accountant; Sandra Knight teaching Black History; Wanda Parker Head of the Science Lab; Lorenzo Fitzgerald head of the Physical Ed. Dept., Michael Bagley, the philosopher, and Russell Jackson and William Clarke, heads of the Art Dept. Now the crystal ball takes us to the Pentagon where we see the Army General, Lewis Berkley; Air Force General, Danny Elder and Navy Captain Jimmie Coleman. On the flip side of the crystal ball, Ambassador to Africa, Alfred White, is taking a trip to Finland. His stewardesses are Eyvonne Chester, Lillie King and Hannah Stokes. The Spirits were all excited about what they had seen, and then suddenly, Elaine Stewart knocks the crystal ball over and it all goes up in smoke. 30 Moser University Nurse Hatchett THE SPIRITS Mathematician Allen 31 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF CLASS OF 1970 We the Class of 1970, having ended our life here at Foster, wish to make a few last bequests. At the end of every rainbow there is a pot of gold, and after twelve long years, Rudolph and Clifton are about to embark upon theirs. Mrs. M. D. Moser, French instructor, has devoted a lot of time in arranging for the departure of these two esteemed travelers. We, the Senior Class, would like to bid them both a pleasant trip and a safe return. Bon Voyage! 86 Lorenzo Morgan Basketball 87 88 We, the Graduating Class of 1970, would like to express our sincere and humble thanks to our parents, who have given us that lingering support which has enabled us to endure the trials of education. We know that without their love, and their consideration, success would be a difficult path to follow. We would like to thank all of our teachers who have worked so faithfully and diligently that we might be mature, and intelligent young men and women. They also who have related from their own knowledge and experiences, the elements of learning, which have been instigated in our minds as the foundation for success. We are indeed grateful to you. To all our schoolmates, those who have already gone out in life and to those who still remain, we want you to know how much we have appreciated your smiling faces. It was your presence that made our high school days such enjoyable ones. It was through your friendliness and cheerfulness that we were able to maintain a sound mind and loving hearts. You will always be remembered by us as the most inspiring schoolmates anyone could have. Our memories will be golden, and our friendship is bonded with steel. We have come to these days not only with a sense of accomplishment, but even more with a sense of challenge and promising perspective. We have traveled twelve miles of the journey and yet our route has only begun. Now that we have reached the crossroads, it is up to each of us to decide which road he will travel next. However, our learnings and preparations here at Foster High, have guided our path toward the road to success. Join us in the future. Class President Q,. Clifton A.
