Gditors On d CoS editors 2 2 dedication WE THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1969 SOLEMNLY DEDICATE OUR YEARBOOK. “THE BULLDOG,” TO MR. ANDREW L. BLACK. YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING SINCE WE WALKED INTO THE DOORS OF LUTHER H. FOSTER IN SEPTEMBER, 1964. AS WE STRIVE TO REACH THE GOAL OF SUCCESS, WE CHERISH YOU IN OUR MINDS AND HEARTS. IN A SMALL AND SINCERE WAY, WE DEDI¬ CATE THIS, OUR 1969 EDITION OF “THE FOSTER BULLDOG.” SENIOR CLASS 3 LEFT TO RIGHT: Daisy Eppes, Berthel Turner, Mary Jefferson, and Verna Hawkes 4 ISTRATION THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS . . . The hour to which you are looking forward with more eagerness and impatience than any other in your whole lives has almost arrived. We are doing the best we can to prepare you for that great hour, which is so rapidly approaching, so that when you have finished your work here you will be able to take your places as capable, efficient, and thoughtful workers in the various fields you have chosen. In this Class of 69, will be found some of our leaders of tomorrow: doctors, lawyers, bankers, teacher aide, some will even be high school principals. The important thing that we earnestly hope for is that every member of the Class of 69 will, as a result of his experience here, go into the world equipped to make some contribution to the community in which he will live. Theodore Roosevelt once said: “All daring and courage, all iron endurance of misfortune, make for a finer, noble type of manhood.” “Courage, hard work, self-mastery, and intelligent effort are all essential to a successful life.” “Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die, and none are fit to live who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life.” The work has been hard and the competition keen. For five years you have made endless sacrifices in order that you would realize this day. Already you see the results of hard work. The real payoff will come to those of you who will be better able to face the hardships of life, and who will receive a lasting joy out of serving mankind as a trustee for God and Humanity. May you remain loyal, sincere, and efficient, and may you carry with you into the waiting world a proven message and much needed leadership. It is my great pleasure to extend to you congratulations upon your graduation. I express the sentiment of the faculty, students, and alumni of Luther H. Foster High School. A. B. Teresa Johnson 74 CLASS HISTORY Looking forward to becoming a part of the great Foster family on September 1964, one hun¬ dred and twenty-five eighth graders enrolled here. Full of energy and anxiety, we began our long and tedious stretch to success. Our pre-freshman year was spent adjusting to high school life. We were honored to have Miss Joyce Jennings crowned “Miss Homecoming,” Misses Myrtis Berkley and Berthell Turner won sec¬ ond and third place respectively. Later Annie Bolling won second place in the May Day Contest. In our freshman year, we participated in various clubs and athletic activities. Miss Linda Cousins won second place in the May Day Contest. In our silly, silly Sophomore year, Miss Edora Doswell won first place in the Homecoming Con¬ test. During our Junior year, Miss Avis Hurte was selected Outstanding Teenager of America. Our talent program, Soul Revue of 1968, was the best ever presented at our alma mater. Our next big event was the Junior Senior Prom which was held at the Community Center in Blackstone, Vir¬ ginia. The theme for the occasion was “Three Coins in a Fountain.” This was a most memorable occasion. On September 3, 1968 we became Seniors. One of the highlights of our senior year was having Miss Shirley Chaffin crowned “Miss Homecoming.” Our football team won second place this year. Seniors participating on the football team were Kermit Hawkes, Tyrone Hawkes, Curtis Hurte, Lynwood Jeter, Herbert Johnson, Horace Oliver, John Pettis, Robert Rhoades, and Woodrow Wright. We owe many thanks to our leaders Miss Harris, Miss Johnson, Mr. Staples, and Mr. Thompson for their loyalty and service. So ends our class history. It leaves us with a heart full of sadness, but a lot of memories which we will forever relive. Naomi Rather 75 WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF . Alma Adams wouldn’t cut up in Shorthand. We, the Bulldogs, of 1979, were scheduled to be launched at 1300 hours, but due to the cause of some minor engine adjustments, we didn’t get off until 1500 hours. Our mechanics were David Blackwell, James Knight, and Rodney Farrar. We had a very nice trip and made one stop on planet Zolo before we got to our destiny. For entertainment we went to Paige’s Ballroom, with our own swinging “Invaders” band. Our band leader was Tommie King. On “sax” was Warren Farrar, on guitar was Wesley Oliver, and on drums was Lloyd Harris. Our songstresses were Patricia Chaffin and Teresa Johnson. Our Go-Go girls were Lillian Jackson, Edith Lee, Viola Fowlkes, Stephanie Bradshaw, Joyce Fowlkes, and Frances Davis were swinging with the “funky” Zolo along with our D.J., Eugene Jennings. After hours of excite¬ ment, we then calmed things down and went to a fashion show to learn other new styles. Modeling the latest fashions were Gretchen Jefferson, Cynthia Taylor, Annie Bolling, Linda Cousins, Alma Adams, and Cynthia Bagley. The Co-Chairmen were Verna Hawkes and Inez Jones. On our arrival on planet Astro, we visited their Black house where our head business executive asked questions about their planet. Our chief executives were Laura Woodson, Brenda Reynolds, Avis Hurt, Herbert Johnson, James Booth, and Herbert Crawley. We then went to the Astro Soup Bowl where the Bulldogs were now about to get into action with our star players, Tyrone Hawkes, Woodrow Wright, Lynwood Jeter, quarter-backs John Pettis and Kermit Hawkes, and our coach Randolph Mitchell. Our opposing team were the Astro Raiders. The Bulldog Cheering Squad was there to cheer the boys to victory. Our cheerleaders were Captains — Daisy Eppes and Sallie Bagley; other members were Hattie Dodson, Doris Dodson, Mildred McCloud, Shirley Edmonds, and Arlene Lewis. Our score-keepers were Warren Epes, Robert Rhoades, and Thomas Ligon. We celebrated our outstanding victory over the Raiders at the Jefferson-Hicks Hotel, where we danced all night to the music of Charles Oliver and the Oliviers. Other members of the band were Charles Allen, Berthell Turner, Patricia Johnson, Myrtis Berkley, Shirley Harris, Shirley Chaffin, and Anna Anderson. Later, we all gathered into The Blue Moon Rocket and blasted home. We were welcomed home by Mr. Ravenell Thompson, Mrs. Mary Johnson Cousin, Mrs. Frances Harris McLean, and Mr. Wayne Staples, and they all were doing the Old Man Boogoloo.
