Virginia CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES KEY SUPPORTERS ADVERTISEMENTS AUTOGRAPHS rom the Cxfitor an cf (jo-Cc iior We, of the 867 yearbook staff, have worked faithfully to produce this edition of the Bulldog. Within these pages, through words and pictures, we have re¬ corded the many memorable events, activities, and accomplishments that have happened to us during our journey through high school. As editor and co-editor, we wish to express our deepest appre¬ ciation to the entire staff, the administration, the faculty, sponsors and the student body for their sincere cooperation in helping us to make this edition a success. We hope that at the present and in the future this edition of the 67 Bulldog will be a treasured keepsake that will recall many happy memories. Edith Hobbs Annie Robertson edicated to Mr. A. Bernard Cousins We, the class of 1967, dedicate to Mr. A. Bernard Cousins this yearbook, the Bulldog. You have understood our problems, assisted us with patience, listened to our complaints, inspired us with confidence, and devoted so much of your time and energy to us. This dedication, from the seniors, is but a small token of our heart¬ felt thanks. We have profited so much through your guidance. To portray throughout life those principles instilled in us by your diligent efforts will be our sincerest endeavor. 3 On behalf of the Faculty and Student Body of the Luther H. Foster High School, we wish to give tribute to Mr. Joseph B. Pervall, our former principal. Mr. Pervall obtained a B.S. degree from Virginia Union University and a M.S. de¬ gree from Virginia State College. He became principal of the Luther H. Foster High School in the year 1959 and retired in 1966. He devoted most of his time to the stu¬ dent body, trying to prepare them for their future undertaking. He tried to motivate the students to realize the great expectations of life. Mr. Pervall stressed the importance of spirituality as well as education in reaching our goal in life. We, the Foster Family, pay special tribute to our beloved former principal, Mr. Joseph B. Pervall. 4 - ■m. What a thrill it must give you, members of the class of 1967, to look over your years in high school. I hope that this school has provided some challenges and means for your future endeavor. The leading citizens of tomorrow will be those who are invited to accept responsibilities after having proved their worth as responsible citizens--not the ones, who have deliberately and aggressively schemed to find shortcuts to excellence, for the leading citizens will need insight to help chart the way to sound proced¬ ures and goods. We will miss you at Luther Foster High School, but we hope that as Alumni you will understand that each alumnus will always be an important part of the school and that you, therefore, will want to see our school grow and become a better high school. You have my sincere congratulations added to all the other congratulatory expressions you have been receiving. A. B. Cousins, Principal 6 OUR SCHOOL SONG HAIL FOSTER HIGH Tune: Danny Boy” Hail Foster High! We pledge our lasting love to thee! Here we have found fulfillment of our dreams, Our childhood dreams of what high school would be. Here we have blossomed from a fertile seed, Soon to reach adulthood, the full-grown tree. We owe tribute now and in times yet to come, To the teachers who guided our fostered ambitions. Teachers who have kindled smoldering sparks, And uncovered the flame of the Foster traditions. Can high school make us ready for the world, For obstacles to conquer, sight unseen? If so, then you dear school, have left us strong To meet life ' s challenges, forthright, serene. Oh Foster! Oh Ye Place of our enlightment. Our stay with you has been a precious thing, A gift to cherish, something everlasting, A forward step to what success will bring. As we pass through thy portals, Foster High, We acclaim one more step to success. We ' ll strive to build lives that are strong and true, That adhere to your teachings, the best. Edith Marie Hobbs Our minds let go a thousand things, Like dates of wars and deaths of kings; But Foster memories we won ' t leave behind, Because they can help make our lives sublime. Foster like an emerald, half hidden from the eye, Fair as a star, when only one is shining in the sky; She is not fair to outward views as many schools may be, Her loveliness I never knew until she smiled on me. We the class of 67 , now sadly depart, With all the happy memories still lingering in our hearts; Let us all be thankful that we ' ve come thus far, And always remember just what we are. May the teachers possess a keen appreciation of their great op¬ portunity to help the youth of our country to make the most of their mentality. May the youth understand that education is not complete unless pursued in the school of God as well as in the school of the world. Thou hast taught us in thy word that whatsoever things are true, just, honest, pure, lovely, and of good report; if there be any virture, and if there be any praise, we should think on these things. Reveal unto the youth. Thy truth, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This wisdom is a defense, but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that hath it. O Lord, open Thou eyes that we may behold wondrous things in thy law. A-men 35 Glass JIts tarty On September 6, 1962, one hundred eleven seeker s of an education enrolled at Luther H. Foster, looking forward to becoming honorary members of the much talked about Foster Family. Facing new and challenging problems in our pre-freshman year, we tried to adjust to high school life. We were very proud to have Miss Jean Smith crowned May Queen for the school year in which we had met all the requirements of eighth graders. Happily we departed for the summer vacation. During our Freshman year we accomplished much more than we anticipated. Many of us were fortunate enough to make the honor roll. Most of us realized, at this point, that we were gradually advancing up the ladder of success. In our sophomore year, one of our fellow students, John Hardy, upset the basketball record with forty-eight points in one game. In the year 1965, we became Juniors. The class officers were: President-Johnnie Green- hill; Vice-president-George Irby; Secretary-Annie Robertson; Assistant Secretary-Alice Mor¬ gan; Treasurer-Colonel Hobbs; Reporter-Linda King; Chaplain-Alicia Hawkes; Sgts. at Arms- Herman Chapman; Richard Marlowe; Parliamentarian-Ronald Johnson. We were honored to have Miss Alice Stokes as runner-up to Miss Homecoming. We presented a Talent Show - Stars of 66. The most talented students in our school and sur¬ rounding schools participated in it. We considered the talent show to be a very successful endeavor. That year we were able to attend the Junior-Senior Prom which was held at the Community Center in Blackstone, Virginia. Our theme for this most enjoyable occasion was Moonlight and Roses. Johnnie Greenhill and Sallie Fitzgerald were crowned King and Queen of the prom. Eighty-two of the one hundred eleven pre-freshmen returned as prospective graduates. Now as we, the class of 67 stand at the peak of our high school career, we realize how much our principal, teachers, and advisors have helped us along this rugged path. May the guiding light of success direct our feet into the paths that will lead us to a pros¬ perous future. Annie Robertson 36 Gfass jrofj iecij The Cron Report from the WTKS broadcasting center by the famous news commentators: Jean Smith, Ann Jones, Lillie Walker, Johnnie Greenhill, and James Johnson. As Astronauts Johnnie Birdsong, Louis Ford, and Russell Jackson returned from their 77th orbital flight from Cron City located on the planet Pluto, they found the towering buildings of Cron City, designed by the wealthy Mr. Thomas Eppes and constructed by Mr. Albert Craw¬ ley and his crew; Gus Blackwell, Harry Carter, Johnnie Harris, Donald Johnson, and Ronnie Hairston. Elsie Evans was recently divorced from Marshall Townes for that millionaire playboy, James Wilson. They visited the Plutonian Speedway, wherein they found the champion, Richard Marlowe taking the lead, with the startling time of 2:10 second per light year, over second place con¬ tender Clarence Smith, with the time of 4:90 second per light year. They were followed by the third place holder Edward Shelton, and last but not least, Charles Bigalow” Marvin kept the home fires burning in fourth place. While here on 5th Avenue, we received the bad news from the renowned director of Metropolitan Hospital, Emmitt Stokes, that Richard Rather is under going a brain operation performed by Dr. George Irby, the well-known brain surgeon. The staff assisting him will be: Dr. Charlie Jones, Dr. Melvin Oliver, and Dr. Leroy Clarke. The nurses found ih Metropolitan Elospital were Elsie Hicks, Marilyn Cooke, Clara Coleman, Annie Robertson, Alice Stokes, and Beulah Dodson. After leaving the hopsital, we were invited to the Vaughan Night Club owned by Brooks Vaughan and his assistant Milton Foster. We traveled by Fortune Bus Line owned by Mr. Jonathan Fortune and driven by Ralph Holmes. Aboard the bus we saw the prominent staff of Plutonian Institute: Sallie Fitzgerald, Doris Bland, Josephine Vaughter, Barbara Oliver, Brenda Bower, and the Dean, Ronald Johnson, along with his Private Secretary, Edith Hobbs. Arriving at Vaughan ' s Night Club, we were startled to see Mary Morgan, a star performer, singing Carry Me Back To Old Earth Land. Also performing were Ruth Booth, Mary Allen, and Geraldine Green. The comedian, Harold Tucker, stole the show with his jokes. Afterward there was a fashion show. Modeling was done by Antionette Jennings, Dorothy Watson, Carolyn Watson, Gloria Williams, and Caroline Dagner. The Mighty Plutonians and the Moon Dogs were having an exciting basketball game. On the first string line-up were John Hardy, Lafayette Hawkes, Colonel Hobbs, Milwood Hobbs, and Tyrone Tucker-the best of the Mighty Plutonians. On the side-line was Coach Herman Chapman of basketball and football fame. The Cheerleaders, Hazel Booker, Linda King, and Alicia Hawkes, were yelling away with the tune Plutonian, Plutonian, we are the best. Some members of the Get Together Club, Chairman, La Verne Robertson, and members Sarah Foster, Laura Robertson, Esther Rowe, Hazel Oliver, Ann Ferguson and Hazel Jackson were sponsoring an Earthcoming Ball. 37 Senior S ass ( )i I of 1967 We, the Senior Class of 1967, having completed a major phase of our education, wish to make the following bequeaths: To our Parents, who gave us financial support, guidance, encouragement, and everlast¬ ing love, we leave our sincere gratitude.
