FOSTER HIGH SCHOOL proudly presents THE 1966 BULLDOG Delmar Studios Burlington, North Carolina Delmar Printing Charlotte, North Carolina FOREWORD Through the gates of Foster High School pass the leaders and followers of tomor¬ row. Each of us enters with different ideas, ambitions and beliefs. At first, we may find that life behind the gates presents the opportunities for making new friends, find¬ ing new social activities, and learning new experiences. Thus, as life around us gath¬ ers momentum, we discover that we are being exposed to a new phase of academic learning. Becoming aware of this new phase, we realize that Life is composed of two parts, that which is passed--a dream; that which is to come--a wish. We study, we play, we learn. A part of that wish is fulfilled after long years of sweat, toil, and tears. The other part of that wish is a pending challenge. Yet, there has to be a memory--a lasting memory of the struggle from beginning to end. Where can we find such a blessed and lasting memory of our high school days, of Bulldog Land? — Here, O mighty reader, in the pages of the 1966 Bulldog--Handle it with care, for it is ever fragile, and it must serve for years to come. Read it, cher¬ ish it. It is a reminder of: OUR CHALLENGES AT LHF 2 . . . AND WE MET THE CHALLENGE. , OF EDUCATION Administration Faculty OF GRADUATION Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Pre-Freshmen OF CONTRIBUTION Classes OF PARTICIPATION Activities ' Features OF COMPETITION Athletics OF SELECTIONS Advertising DEDICATION We the Senior Class of 66 solemnly dedicate our yearbook, the 1966 Bulldog , to our devoted faculty. Being our final year at Luther H. Foster, we select you, dear faculty, with deepest gratitude for the assistance you gave us as we met the many difficult challenges which confronted us. We feel that we are a very special and privileged class to be graduating when the world is in the great need of highly trained and educated young men and women. We wish to show our appreciation for your willingness to help us in every worth¬ while thing we have strived to do. We proudly dedicate this Bulldog Yearbook of ’66 to you, our most understanding faculty. Jacqueline Branch William Carter, Jr. 4 s=£S5S5 cmc2 arrjrmcn OUR SCHOOL SONG HAIL FOSTER HIGH Tune Danny Boy Hail Foster High! We pledge our lasting love to thee! Our voices raised, we ' ll ever sing your praise With open minds, we learn, we know no other-- Thy name alone, we proudly cheer and raise! (Chorus) Hail Foster High! Your mortals stand so steadfast-- True to humanity, and brotherhood, We stand with you forever and forever, Your cause is just, so kind, so true and so good. Hail Foster High! Erect with structure, bold and great, Your beauty we, will always keep preserved. You stand in tribute to the welfare of mankind It ' s us, dear school, it ' s us you’ve nobly served. (Adopted by faculty - October 19, 1950) 5 f A M i -• Peace is not absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS. . . It becomes my pleasure again to congratulate you on your educational achievements thus far. I hope that I can award you a crown of victory in June. It hardly seems like five years since I first welcomed you in the Foster family and yet you have almost completed your tasks. Many changes have taken place at Foster and in the world since our first meeting. I hope that these changes have influenced you and that the knowledge you have received here has been so flexible that you will want greater accomplishments. In your strife, remember that the best is desired in anything that you do. Your best only comes after your earnest effort, skilled attainment, and dogged determinations to move forward. Take an honest retrospect of yourselves. How will you fit in this scheme of life? It is easy to say I can ' t, but is it an honest appraisal? Have you applied hard work to efforts? There is no substitute for knowledge. For he who said-- I am the Way - -is still the way. If you in your strife for greater accomplishments, follow his pattern of life, I assure you that prosperity will be yours. Go forth and make Nottoway, Foster and parents proud of you. Mr. Joseph B. Foster soil. Greeted by many friendly faces and waiting oppor¬ tunities in this land of wisdom, these explorers soon settled to obtain understanding in various fields of knowledge. Certainly we had many successful expeditions along the way. In the pre-freshman expedition, much of the time was spent getting adjusted to this new environ¬ ment but many of us found interest and represented our school in clubs, sports, and district con¬ ferences. Johanna Venable won the title of May Queen in 1961-62. In the freshman expedition, Eva Maria Adams, Jacqueline Hurt, Lillian Booker, and Jacqueline Branch were selected by virtue of their musical training, to participate in the All-State Choir held at Virginia State College, Petersburg. Wanda Fitzgerald, William Carter, Sandra Fowlkes, and Carrie Green received awards at the District Math-Science Conference. Harriet Bridge- forth became a member of the girl’s basketball team. In the sophomore expedition, Susan Smith won third place in a Pyrofax Baking Contest. We were fortunate to have a group of students who displayed their athletic abilities. Jennie Jones, Carrie Green, Annie Hawkes, Susan Smith, Carolyn King, and Joann McCray became members of the girl ' s basketball team. Our sophomore boys who displayed their outstanding abilities in athletics were James Walker, William Carter, Jesse King, John Vaughter, Roger Eppes, Emmett Tucker, Henry Banks, James Jennings, and Charles Williams. In the junior expedition, eight of our members, Annie Hawkes, Carrie Green, Merdith Ward, Sandra Fowlkes, Susan Smith, Wanda Fitzgerald, Roger Eppes, and Kelvin Hobbs were accept¬ ed into the National Honor Society. At the District Conference, Sandra Fowlkes was elected secretary. Susan Smith received a $200 Drama Scholarship. Harriet Bridgeforth became cap¬ tain of the girl ' s basketball team and William Carter became captain of the football team. The Junior talent show, On Broadway,” was the hit of the year. Our next big event was the Junior-Senior Prom which was held at the Community Center in Blackstone, Virginia. The theme for the most enjoyable occasion was Tender Is The Night. Our Senior expedition finally arrived and at last we reached that long awaited moment. The eighty-five of us who had successfully overcome the obstacles in our paths, became the Senior Class of 1966. One of the highlights of our senior year was having Sandra Farrar crowned Miss Homecoming for the year ' 65-66. We owe many thanks to our leaders, Miss Godette, Mr. Griffin, and Mr. Anderson for their loyalty and service. Our school years have been highly educational, enjoyable, and rewarding. We shall forever cherish the memory of the challenges of our years at Foster. They will serve as stepping stones to success in the future. They state that Roger Eppes, the president there, has recently joined in holy matrimony with Jennie Jones, the chief of staff, at the D. R. Miller Sanitarium. Some prominent doctors, and nurses at this sanitarium are John Stokes, Samuel Blackwell, James Peace, Robert Allen, Henry Banks, Wanda Fitzgerald, Sarah Ward, Bernice Robertson, Rosa Ford, and Dallas Knight. We have met the challenges which confronted us- -how well we met them must be judged by others. As we go forth from these protective halls, the ideas, ambitions, and beliefs that were instilled in us will be the blocks from which we shall sculpture our coming years. But individuality must serve as the tools with which we shall carve. ” For Every Man Is The Architect Of His Own Future. SENIOR DIRECTORY Adams, Eva Maria Viola (E) P.O. Box 323, Blackstone, Va.
