How well we remember our anxieties and misgivings on that first bus ride to high school. As we hob bled along, we were engulfed in great expectations of the future. Life in high school was different, challenging and fun. Our lessons were the most challenging aspect of our lives at Foster. We shall never forget the Old Foster Spirit. It was always present, but it showed most at pep rallies and games . It is what has kept us together in both mind and spirit. When we represented Foster at other schools, we took pride in saying I am from Foster High. As we go along our separate paths, we would like to keep alive this spirit as we reflect back on those Foster memories. CONTENTS LUTHER H. 1965 BULLDOG FOSTER, NOTTOWAY, VIRGINIA FOREWORD The seniors of this year are privileged to have the opportunity to publish the ' 65 editon of the Bulldog. From the inspiration of our five years at Luther H. Foster and with the sincere help of our staff, administration, faculty and student body, we, the co-editors, have tried to center the theme of our yearbook around Foster Memories. We sincerely hope that this edition of the Bulldog will serve as a constant reminder, as a source of enjoyment and as a cherished keepsake. Emma Jones Jacqueline Tucker Anna Fowlkes 4 DEDICA TION We the seniors of 1965 solemnly dedicate our yearbook the Bulldog to our devoted parents. This being our last and final year at Luther H. Foster High, we select you, dear parents, with deep appreciation for helping us with our many difficult problems and tasks which have confronted us. We feel that we are a very special and privi- ledged class to be able to graduate when the world is in the process of selecting its most highly trained and educated young men and women. We will turn to you many times for your advice and special blessings. We now dedicate to you the 1965 edition of the Bulldog as a token of our gratitude. FOSTER IN A CTION fwr. ‘ % %Sl ' % P —l:.j. f -y K H ADMINISTRATION THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I congratulate you, the Members of the Senior Class, on your educational achievement thus far. As you leave Luther H. Foster High School, may you continue to improve yourselves. At no previous time has it been of utmost importance than it is today that all of you continue to train effectively your hands, your minds, and your heart in order that you may cope with the demands of our society. As you leave Old Foster, let me admonish you to face the world with a courage which withstands the forces of sin and destruction so evident in our daily struggle for success. Be assured that there abounds within each of you a Divine Presence always ready to protect, guide and restore you. This Divine Presence exists through your faith in Christ Jesus. With Him you will win. Joseph B. Pervall, Principal 8 SR. AND JR. Although we were new, several of us represented Luther Foster very well. William Bass, III won first place in a talent contest; Rose Jones, Emma Jones and Anna Fowlkes won in the District Math-Science Conference and Kenneth Woodson won in a District Public Speaking Contest. Calvin Wilson and Garnette Christopher made the All State Choir. v In September 1961, we returned to Dear Old Foster. Those who continued to excel were William Bass, III, talent; Calvin Wilson, Garnette Christopher, Choir; Kenneth Woodson, N.F.A. We also participated in the Athletic Activities. In our Sophomore year we participated in the Math-Science Confer¬ ence, N.F.A., SPA, Choir, Athletics and Industrial Arts. Then came our most exciting year, the Junior year. That year twelve of us were initiated into the Elite Chapter of the National Honor Society and Jacqueline Tucker was crowned Miss Foster, of that we were very proud. We also presented a talent show, Top Talent of the Year which was very successful. The Prom we gave the class of 64 was centered around the Rain¬ bow. Indeed it was a gala affair. At intermission Sarah Marshall was crowned Queen of the Prom. Several juniors were on the first team of the 1964 Second Place Championship Baseball Team. We have now reached the zenith of our high school career. We shall let this year speak for itself. We realize that without the guidance, inspiration, and belief of you, our parents and faculty, these accom¬ plishments would have been impossible. As we approach the end of the beginning we realize that the years have gone by so rapidly. We the Seniors of 1965 are leaving dear old Foster, we hope that in our passing we have achieved something of value. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And parting, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. William Bass, III Kenneth Woodson 12 Colors: Pink Black CldSS Flower: Pink Carnation Motto: Tomorrow ' s End Will Depend On What Yon Begin Today CLASS POEM Departing from you dear Foster Almost seems untrue But yet we depart with happy hearts Knowing that we have a specific job to do. We have had many problems And have shed many tears So we shall never forget you, Foster And those enjoyable years. As Seniors, we can but say That this is the end We have only reached the beginning And our goal is yet to win. But we will not give up We ' ll reach our goal one day But we ' ll always remember, Foster That it was you, who kept us from astray. So as we depart from you We will leave a concluding thought Be not the first to cast the old aside, Be not the last on which the new is tried. Margaret Lewis CLASS SONG Tune: O Tannenbaum Standing in structure bold and brave We hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Above all others we ' ll observe That thou hast bought us thus far. With sorrow and joy, we leave thee not To strive for better things in life Our efforts then shall always be Pure in heart, with thoughts of thee. Chorus: The Class of 1965 sings praises To dear Foster High We ' ll always remember thee, Our Alma Mater, dearly. On a special tour, as reporters, we visited the Twilight Zone. We stopped on Planet Mars to visit the Mars General Hospital, due to the fact, we needed a physical checkup after leaving our home planet. At the Mars General Hospital we found Vivian Vaughan as head nurse. Other nurses there were Arlene Harris, Velma Allen, Barbara Dyson, Frances Jones, and Katherine Stokes. Since the General Hospital was very crowded, we went to the Memorial Hospital. Joyce Fowlkes was head nurse and other nurses were Phyllis Hill, Jean Dyson, Mary Thomas, Virginia Eppes and Fannie Yates. We learned that Millie Ward and Mildred Blackwell were nurses at the Blair General Hospital. When leaving the hospital in our new ' 75 Starchief Satellite, we were so excited we missed seeing our Favorite Martian and had an accident as we ran straight into him. Therefore we needed lawyers. Fortunately, when trial time came around, Bobby Gills was our attorney and William Bass III was the judge. The trial was in favor of us, your traveling reporters. For more excitement we visited Planet Jupiter and attended a baseball game at the Jupiter Stadium. To our surprise we found the Rhoades brothers playing on the team from Jellystone Park. Freeman was the outstanding catcher and Tom was the most popular pitcher. At the game Tom pitched a No-Hitter. Immediately after the game we left for Planet Earth. Our first stop on Earth was at Branch ' s Beauty Salon in New York City. There Mary Branch was the top hair stylist in the area. We had some boss hair styles -- you had better believe it. Next we visited the Price ' s Modeling Center located a short distance from the beauty salon. There was Shirley Price operating her own business. Her seam¬ stress was Barbara Booth and we were delighted to find beautiful outfits for all occasions. The next day we rented a car for a few days and after a period of time something came loose in t he motor, and we contacted the Taylor-Johnson Garage. The garage was owned and operated by William Taylor and Harold Johnson. We were delighted to learn they were the best mechanics in New York City. After the car was fixed, we stopped by the 42nd Precinct to acquire directibns to the Brooklyn Heights High School. There we found James Bridgeforth, an officer on the Police Force. Fie held the office of Sergeant and his chief officers were Warren Foster and John Cousins. Leaving the Precinct, we went to the Brooklyn Heights High School. Margaret Wilson was Principal, George Worsham was the Director of the Physical Edu- 30 PROPHECY cation Department, Emma Jones and Anna Fowlkes were Mathematics Teachers and the Business Instructors were David Neal, Doris Craft, Arlene Downs and Jacqueline Tucker. Across the court was the elementary school where Katheleen Belle, Phillip Cathey, Frances Shelton and Ella Jones were Instructors. We then boarded a plane for Maine. Our first stop was at the University of Maine. Joann Tucker was the most prized Home Economics teacher and Margaret Lewis, a brilliant Mathematics Teacher. Next we went to the Marshall Enterprise Limited Corporation. Kenneth Woodson was the President, Samuel Hobbs was 1st Vice President, and Carnell Robertson was 2nd Vice President. The chief bookkeeper was Mary Perry. Simon Green- hill and Tyrone Ligon were IBM Operators. Kenneth ' s private secretary was Shirley Neal and other secretaries working there were Etta Booker, Shirley Allen, and Gladys Lee. The most efficient typists working at the Enterprise Corporation were Novella Fitzgerald, Dorothy Tucker and Antionette Wells. We learned that Larry Greenhill and Betty Tucker owned and operated a Private Commercial Arts School. Calvin Wilson owned his Electronic Corp. and was preparing missiles for the United States Government. His top stenographers were Rose Jones, Mary Wilson and Georgine Johnson. Stopping by the Navy Base in Maine, we found Dr. Alexander Shelton doing research in Marine Biology. His two assistants were navy officers Charlie Jefferson and Wave Pearl Akers. On our way back to the hotel we glanced in the newspaper and saw a picture of Melvin Evans, N.F.L. player of the year. The photograph was taken by the sports photographer, Waverly Johnson. Upon our arrival at the New Englander Hotel, Juanita Epes decided she wanted a Martian haircut, after being impressed with the styles on Planet Mars. The hotel had its private barber shop. Employed there were Willie Tucker, Charlie Foster, Thomas Lewis and Frank Jones. The next morning we prepared to return to our employment agency, but before leaving, we attended the Living Brook Church were Evelyn Fortune was minister. We enjoyed the service very much. We, your reporters for the Confidential Magazine, had a long enjoyable trip. We were delighted to learn our fellow classmates were doing so wonderfully in life and their undertakings. Naturally we evidenced many weaknesses --we cannot say that this was the best class ever to be graduated from Luther H. Foster -- such judgment is beyond our limits. But we have accepted our challenge and exerted a definite drive forward -- each in his chose realm. As freshmen and now seniors, we represent a variety in potential and a variety in fulfillment. The evolution of specific talents -- this was the course of our human history. We would be remembered then as- strivers as we go out into life. For tomorrow ' s end will depend on what we begin today. 84 ADVERTISING PA TRONS Mrs. Marcella Alston Mrs. Finnis W.
