The date of September 5, 1959, will always be alive in our minds; for on that day, one hundred and thirty-nine eager eighth graders were looking with appre¬ hension and hesitation upon the five years ahead of us at Luther H. Foster. The mere thought of being eighth graders in this great school caused us to jump for joy. A number of us became members of various organizations, participated in various activities, and were elected officers of different clubs: Jeannette Johnson was chaplain of the S.P. A., Alice Bland and Beatrice Wynn were poetry winners in a contest. Our first year was interesting, enjoyable, and profitable. At the end of the year we were ready for the oncoming challenges. Our Freshman year required much more thought, work, and study than the first one, but we won. More of our classmates participated in various activities. Cora Peace, Shirley Knight, and Eugene White were awarded certificates in the All State Choir. Ruth Green, Jeannette Johnson, Curtis Pritchett, and Mearl Smith joined the basketball squads. Susan Schancks, Lillie M. Wilson, Lillian Ford, and Pattie Tucker joined the cheering squad. Ann Hanks was elected Miss FBLA. Clarice Wynn was third place winner in the Homecoming Contest. As our Sophomore year began to unfold, our achievements were many. We had become entirely accustomed to our roles in the Foster family. Our Junior year marked the last half of our High School Career and granted us many responsibilities . Even though a great many of our classmates were no longer in school, the r emainder of us were determined to strive on. Qualified members of our class became members of the National Honor Society. Our talent show -- Stars on Parade, was the best ever presented at our Alma Mater. Prom time! May 24, 1963. The prom was held at the Dillard Street Community Center in honor of the Seniors of 1962. The theme was Stairway to the Stars. On September 4, 1963, we became Seniors. This called for a celebration; and actually, it lasted all year. We tried at all times to perform a minimum of work and to have a maximum of fun. Now, as we end our career at Foster High, we pause to say thanks to our principal, Mr. Joseph B. Pervall; our sponsors, and all members of the fac¬ ulty for their help which was greatly needed. So ends our class history. It leaves us with a heart full of sadness but a lot of memories which we will forever relive. 8 Ann Hanks Paula King Jeannette Johnson CLASS SUPERLA TIVES Mearl Smith TWINS Earl Smith Doretha Hobbs BEST DANCERS Eugene White Lunette Tucker MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Catherine Anderson Beatrice Wynn MOST DEPENDABLE Charlie Campbell Gloria Rather QUIETEST Willie Eppes Theodore Fitzgerald MOST ENERGETIC Lillian Ford Paula King MOST SOPHISTICATED Shirley Knight Myra Davis BEST ATHLETICS Curtis Pritchett Catherine Dodson MOST HUMOROUS Andrew Black Robert Booker ARTISTS Edward Fowlkes Susan Schancks CHEERLEADERS Lillie Wilson Martha Oliver SMALLEST Robert Booker James Fowlkes SLOWEST Herman Perry Pattie Tucker BEST POSTU RES Mary Evans Jean Eppes MOST BUSINESSLIKE LADIES Ann Hanks Marion Watson MOST DETERMINED Yvonne Reynolds Clarice Wynn HAPPIEST Constance Smith Joyce Harris MOST CONTENTED Harry Hawkes Carolyn Dyson MOST VERSATILE Cora Peace Annie Tucker MOST UNCONCERNED Florine Yates Willie Perry LAZIEST Hazel Green Robert Jefferson MOST BASHFUL Bernice Worsham Elsie Hawkes MOST MANNERABLE Eunice Carter Betty Jeffries MOST KINDHEARTED Geraldine Svdnor Richard Booth CLASS FILIBUSTERS James Ferguson George Oliver MOST AMBITIOUS Jeannette Johnson 9 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Charlie Campbell -- Pres. , Lillie Wilson -- Vice Pres. , Beatrice Wynn -- Sec. , Susan Schancks -- Asst. As we journeyed back into the states we were very amazed at the progress of our fellow classmates. First, we would like to tell you about our comfortable flight home which was aboard the BWJ Airliner. It ' s owners are Robert Booker, John Williams, ana Curtis Johnson. We didn ' t have a car waiting, but that was no problem because Smith ' s Rent-a-Car which is run by the Smith twins -- Earl Mearl, was glad to provide us with transportation. The two firms are doing very well together. Our first stop was in New York where we stayed a couple of days to see our other classmates who were doing so well. Cora Peace has opened her schoo l for opera next door to Carnegie Hall. One of her prize students is Shirley Knight who has just made High C. Her lead soprano is Lillie Mae Wilson, and Robert Jefferson is trying to sing Baritone. While in New York we also discovered that Leon Harris has his own Bongo group playing Sounds of the Congo. Leon and his lead bongo players, Richard Coleman, Fred Hawkes, Willie Perry may appear on Hootenanny one day. Florine Yates is running a beauty school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and she is trying very hard to graduate Josephine Friend, Betty Simms and Hazel Green. They are coming along though and say it won’t be long before they will be run¬ ning one of their own. Andrew Black is now president of UCLA. Some of his professors are Myra Davis, Richard Booth, and Marilyn King. His head coach is Curtis Pritchett, and his head custodian is Herman Perry. Edward Fowlkes has his art museum open. His secretary is Ann Hanks and his artists are James Fowlkes and Helen Johnson. John Green has just signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers. Eugene White, Charles Vaughter, and Johnnie Price cut their first record Don’t Laugh At Us on Decca Label. Annie Tucker is their manager. Doretha Hobbs is now living in Miami, Florida running her own Millinery Shop. Her fashionable models are Jean Eppes, Paula King, and Lillie S. Wilson. As we ventured down south we found Grace Booth giving judo lessons in Mississippi. She is making sure that Edith Watson, Harvey Ingram, and Allen Lewis learn the basic steps. Theodore Fitzgerald is running a Barber Shop there also. Eva Carter told us that she plans to audition for one of Broadway ' s big openers in the near future. She is really making with the make-up these days. We wish her success. Willie Eppes, Harry Hawkes, Thomas Oliver are now big time constructors and are building the most beautiful homes for their prospective brides, Annie Friend, Marion Watson, and Jeannette Johnson. The girls have just finished charm courses. Gilbert Hurte now has an office in Dallas. Joyce Harris Gloria Rather are his private secretaries. Emmanuel Fitzgerald and Arthur Harris are his associates. Although Pattie Tucker won ' t reveal his name, we know she plans a luxurious wedding in the near future. At present she is receptionist for one of our well- known dentists, Naomi Davis. Carolyn Dyson works on the psychiatric ward at a new hospital in Los Angeles where she tries to comfort those ill at heart. Lillian Ford and Patricia Barkley are officers in the WAC and they are trying to persuade Betty Jeffries, Mary Evans, and Shirley Jones to join. At present they are mourning over broken hearts. We’ve finally made it back to Virginia, where a number of our classmates remain and are doing exceptionally well. George Oliver is Chief-of-Staff at Memorial Hospital in Richmond. His chief resident, at which we were surprised is Roosevelt Elder. His head nurse is Catherine Anderson and her students are Eunice Carter and Geraldine Sydnor. Clarice Wynn and Constance Smith are nurses at Central State Hospital. Carrie Green is now a Physical Education Professor at Virginia State College and Elsie Hawkes is her only student. Daisy Robertson is at Virginia State College planning to become a Drama Critic. Berneice Worsham and Shirley Elder are in Lunenburg helping to pack the Goodwill Bags. Our last stop was in Nottoway County. The most astonishing news of the whole trip was to learn that James Ferguson and Irvin Yates are running for Mayor of Crewe. May the better man win. Josephine Booth and Catherine Dodson were determined to keep Burkeville alive, so they published the town ' s first paper, the Boo-Dods News. Martha Oliver and Martha Knight are still in Blackstone feuding over which Martha the town ' s new dress shop was named; we decided to stay out of that situation. Now I guess you wonder what has happened to us. Well, we are big time tourists, traveling all around the world. This trip has been one of the most interesting. Our next trip will take us to Paris, France, so until we return we must say, Au Revoir. Beatrice Wynn Susan Schancks Yvonne Reynolds CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1964, being of sound mind and memory, and having reached an age where we are soon to pass on to higher realms, do hereby make and declare this to be the last will and testament of our class. To Mr. Pervall and members of our beloved faculty, who have so faithfully worked with us, we leave a large amount of sympathy for their depressing attempts to pound knowledge into our craniums. Virginia State College A MESS A GE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TO THE SENIORS Every year it becomes my esteemed pleasure to congratulate the seniors for their success over the past five years. Every year it is with the same mixed feeling of joy and sadness. I wish I could feel with confidence that you are prepared to meet the challenge that lies ahead. Prepared or unprepared you must answer for yourself a question asked by James (brother of Jesus) in his Epistles -- quote For what is your life. For two thousand years this question has come to every individual at some time or another, and every one must answer in not just words but in your every walk of life. Life for all of us is purposeful in one degree or another. The vissitudes of life will break some and will give strength of character to others. If you decide to push forward forward, to achieve --to make a name for yourself; that is a choice, and may God be with you all the way. On the other hand, if you decide to drift, wait on luck, prey on others -- that too is a choice and you must be prepared for the dreadful consequences. The decision you make will determine your future and I hope it is the former. Have confidence in yourself, seek the advice of the wise and the good and above all have Faith in God and seek His salvation early. Believing as (again from James) If the Lord wills we shall live. Joseph B. Pervall 52 GUIDANCE COUNSELOR Miss Martha V. Singleton A Message from the Guidance Counselor The members of the Class of 1964 have my sincere wishes for success and happiness as you leave Foster High -- the school to which you have pledged your lasting love. We have great expectations for you be¬ cause of the guidance services of which you have availed yourself and the perse¬ verance you have exemplified. You are expected to keep burning bright the intel¬ lectual fires which have been kindled within you here. You are expected to be courageous and add your own creative contributions to human progress. You are expected in your vocation and leisure activities to be an inspiration and an example for others. You are expected to thank God for your talents and abili¬ ties by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good; also, to thank God for opportunities by accepting them as a challenge to achievement. You deserve our congratulations. You are worthy of our sincere and earnest prayers -- prayers that you may always move forward, may you ever be mindful of the words of Thomas E . Dewey; We need not be afraid of the future, for the future will be in our own hands. We shall need courage, and determination; but above all, we shall need faith -- faith in ourselves, in our communities, and in our country.
