Ā , ā€ž F OSTEH OĀ«ASSOa . R °sr ®« Class Colors Black and Yellow Class Flower Yellow Carnation Class Motto Out of the harbor into the deep channels Class Song As we leave this our Alma Mater Let our hearts be filled with pride, For our years have all been fruitful And you ' ve been our solomn guide. Oh Foster, we will hold your name high To our motto we will be true, As we march each day Through our parting ways The Senior Class of ' 62. Though the years ahead will bring us trials When our stay with you is done; We will always realize, dear Foster, That our struggle ' s just begun. When we leave, we ' ll take with us your blessings, We ' ll remember you in all we do; Parting brings us sorrow, But we seek tomorrow-- We the Seniors of ' 62. Class Poem The years have crept upon us And now we must depart. But the memory of you, Dear Foster, Will forever linger in our hearts. For you have shared with us The bounty of thy soul. And planted in our hearts and minds The seeds of noble goals. Your touch of love and devotion Has been a radiant light. Guiding us slowly and diligently Through paths which lead aright. Your teachings and your precepts Have led us to life anew; Till we now glimpse life ' s vistas From a true and lofty view. So good-by, Dear Foster High, Farewell, farewell. In our minds you ' ll e ' er remain. In our hearts you ' ll always dwell. 2 To show our appreciation for his willingness to help us in any worthwhile thing we strive to do; for all the extra work and his determination and desire to do anything in his power to make our school a better place and the students in it better citizens, we proudly dedicate the 1962 Bulldog to this understand¬ ing man, our principal, Mr. J. B. Pervall. 3 Foreword Co-Editors’ Message To produce a yearbook for the student body is one of the most outstanding privileges awarded to seniors. This year through the enthusiasm and hard work of our yearbook staff, administration, faculty, and student body, we, the co-editors, have tried to guide in the makings of this book of memories. We sincerely hope that this ' 62 edition of the Bulldog will serve as a basis for enjoyment and appreciation in later years and will serve to broaden us as individuals in the modern world. JOSEPH B. PERVALL, B.S., M.S. To the Seniors Again, it has become my pleasure to extend congratulations to the Senior Class; which I do painfully, knowing that the parting is not far off. Schools are established, maintained and supported to provide oppor¬ tunities for experiences that will enable the students to properly fit into our ever changing world when they leave here. Each subject plays some unique part in this preparation, and should not be minimized or taken lightly. Much concern and publicity are given today to mighty forces of destruc¬ tion, some natural; others by power-crazed people. In all this, we urge you to stand firm and fear not. Fortify yourself with that armour de¬ scribed by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians-- Put on the whole Armour of God, the breastplate of Righteousness, Loins girded with Truth, shod with Peace, the Shield of Faith and Helmet of Salvation and don ' t forget to PRAY. It is our prayer that you learn to use the bounteousness of the earth to the glory of God and salvation of man; that His Kindgom will come and will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Joseph B. During our tour of this great institution, many of our goals have been accomplished. In our pre-freshmen year, we spent most of our time adjusting to high school life which was very interesting and enjoyable. Some of us were fortunate enough to make the Honor Roll. Evelyn Shelton was an attendant for Miss Homecoming. Charles Dyson and Mallory Miller became members of the choir because of their superior talent in music. Several members attended the District and State Math-Science Conference. During our ireshman year, we were getting well acquainted with the school and its activities. We were fortunate enough to have a group of students who displayed their athletic abilities. Claudia Carter, Ann Wilson, Virginia Green, Lillian Coleman, and Gwendolyn Anderson became members of the girls ' basketball team. Our freshman boys who displayed their superior abilities in athletics were George Green, Allen Bridgeforth, Charles Dyson, and William Hicks. Others who latter displayed their athletic abilities were William Irby, James Lee, Royal Stokes, Warren Johnson, William Engrum, David Epps, Weslie Fitzgerald, Robert Hardy, Leon Person, MacArthur Campbell, Charles Daniels, and Oakie Robertson. In football, Allen Bridgeforth was voted most valuable player of the year by the coach and fellow teammates. In all types of sports you need someone to give you encouragement, and for four years our boys had just such a person, Old Faithful, Richard Coleman. Claudia Carter ranked third place in the May Queen Contest. While in the Sophomore Class, Gladvs Harper won third place in the Miss Homecoming Contest. Claudia Carter was voted the most valuable player in basketball for the year. During this year, the Tenth Grade speech Choir originated under the instruction of Mr. R.D. Harris. During our Junior year, our long awaited Junior-Se nior Prom was held at the Community Center in Blackstone, Virginia. The theme for the occasion was A Night in Paradise. It was a most enjoyable and exciting night to remember. Our superb show business talent lead us to a record breaking crowd when the great Junior Show of Showsā€ was presented in the school auditorium. William Irby and George Green made the All-Tournament Team. Claudia Carter, Evelyn Shelton, and William Engrum brought back to the Foster family the superior rating in the Dramatics Festival at Virginia State College. The Junior Class officers were President, Alma Bland; Vice President, James Lee; Secretary, Theresa Fowlkes; Assistant Secretary.Charles Dyson; Treasurer, Catherine Jones; Parliamentarian, Elizabeth Craft; Sergeant-at-Arms, George Green and Donald Jackson; Chaplain, Charles Daniels. Also in our Junior year the Elite Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized for the first time, under the direction of Miss Carol Luck. Its Junior members were Mallory Miller, Claudia Carter, Theresa Fowlkes, Eliza¬ beth Craft, Catherine Jones, Edith Hill, Verely Gaffney, Joan Bates, and Evelyn Shelton. Charles Dyson and Mallory Miller participated in the All-State Choir at Virginia State College. September 6, 1961, seventy-eight of us arrived back as seniors. We elected our class officers as follows: President, Mallory Miller; Vice President, Verely Gaffney; Secretary, Alma Bland; Assistant Secretary, Catherine Jones; Treasurer, Theresa Fowlkes; Chaplain, Elizabeth Craft; Parlia¬ mentarian, Benjamin Stith. We are happy to have a senior, Ophelia Fowlkes, chosen as Miss Homecomingā€ for the year ' 61-62. At last we have reached the crossroad that will be aldetermining factor in the lives of all of us. We owe many thanks to our devoted sponsors, Mrs. Gordon, Miss Jones, and Mr. Johnson for their loyalty, understanding, and ser¬ vice which they have so nobly displayed.
