1961 BULLDOG Artist: George Allen TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword. 3 Dedication. 4 Annual Staff. 5 Principal.: 6 Faculty. 8 Staff.12 Seniors. 14 Classes. 28 Organizations. 44 Activities. 52 Advertisements. 66 FOREWORD CO-EDITOR’S MESSAGE As this awaited school year has come and is now slowly passing, we, the co-editors, have paused to catch the climax of our high school career. Within this book we have tried to compile, through words and pictures, all of the events of our senior year. The co-editors as well as the entire yearbook staff have worked diligently for many days and weeks to produce this 61 edition of the Bulldog. Therefore, being the co-editors, it is with much gratitude that we thank the entire staff, administration, faculty and student body for their unselfish co-operation and help. We hope that in the years to come you will treasure this book more and more, and will let it serve as a reminder of the very happy moments and events you had during your high school days. Co-Editors: Christinia Christopher John Robertson 3 We, the Senior Class of 1961, dedicate this year’s edition of the Bulldog to our devoted parents and faculty. We are grateful for the effort you have put forth to assist us in constructing a firm foundation, which we consider an absolute necessity. As we come to the crossroads in life, we believe that with your past instructions and guidance, we will be capable of making a wise choice. With sincere gratitude, we dedicate this book to you as a token of our deep appre¬ ciation. VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGE ■ WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE PRINCIPAL I am grateful to be asked for a message to the class. First, I would like to congratulate the class on their educational achievements thus far. So you are leaving us. As painful as parting with those you have worked so long, I can but bid you God’s speed on your journey. You are going out at a time of greatness--great scientific discoveries, great medical achievements, great discoveries, great mass production, great finance, and great propaganda. To all of these you must become a part, willing or not. Our earnest prayer is that you be strong. Fit yourselves like men--meet the challenge. Fret not because of the multiplicity or complication of the problem, but with courage, fortitude and faith meet them head on. The highway of life has many crossroads. Signs invite me traveler to choose this way or that way. There is but one true way, Few there be to find it,” few see at every turning to the road a sign that leads to the way of service to mankind. Many are lost in the maze of crossroads. Bringing them to the true way is as much your responsibility as keeping in it yourself. If you can but tune your ear to Him who says, I am the way and follow there¬ after, you will keep in the right road and the world will be blessed because you passed here. 6 Miss Catherine L. We, the authors of this article, are the only graduates of the Class of 1961 who live on Cloud Nine; however, we are happy to report that all of our former classmates are floating just as high as we are. Alice Hurt, Avis Hurt, Lois Page, and Bernice Parham are working as secretaries for the Green Detective Agency which is owned and operated by Theodore Green. Walter Bagley and Clyde Yates are head custodians. Christene Parker and William Walker are happily married and living in Paris, France. They now have five beautiful children. Fred Wilson is now practicing medicine in a small hospital in Beggartown. Joan Vaughter is his head nurse. Elsie Tucker and Howard Hill are planning to marry when Elsie returns from a tour abroad. Christinia Christopher and Dexter Neal have established a small nursery. It consists of most of their children. Really, they don ' t make much profit. Barbara Fitzgerald, now head of the Music Department at Fisk University, is taking psychiatric treatments from Dr. Annette Jennings. Barbara Jennings and Ellis Currin are saving for a fabulous wedding which will take place after Barbara decides to give up her career. Winston Guy is such a successful lawyer that he needs five secretaries. He has chosen five most efficient ones. They are Ann Jones, Laura Oliver, Gelene Tucker, Lucille Stewart, and Oneada Johnson. There has been a rumor that they plan to pull straws to determine which one will marry him. Carson Featherson now holds the middle weight championship belt of the world. His trainers are James Stokes and Ella Fitzgerald. They seem to be quite a team. John Robertson, Edward Fowlkes, George Peace, and Ernest Fowlkes are at present on a tour with Fats Domino. George Fitzgerald, Karl Fowlkes, and Robert Harris have become experienced architects. They have been chosen by Archie Elder, the new principal of our Alma Mater, to build a new Foster High School. Cornelia Thornton, Lillian Perry, and Katherlean Thomas are leading songsters in the Grumbling Rock Church in Cigarville. The Pastor is none other than Elwood Jones. He has been in this profession since he lost his one and only love to his best friend. His one and only deacon is Herbert Hill who is present at all times. Ora Lewis and McCarthy Downs are making wonderful music together. You can hear them any time on radio station S-A-D. Linwood Stokes is the announcer. Gladys Craft and Helen Eppes have a Parisian Dress Shop located in Hollywood, California. Their top designers are George Jennings, George Allen, and Alvin Brown. They believe that men make the best designers. Paul Robertson has established a modeling school where the First National Bank of Blackstone used to be. Some of his most promising students are Mary Ferguson, Bernice Oliver, Bernice Booth and Mabel Dagner. Roy Tucker, Aldolphus Greenhill, and Thomas Jennings are playing professional football with the Baltimore Colts. Roy, better known as Shorty, is pl aying opposite Big Daddy. Frances Jones, Shirley Bland, Sue Mitchell, and Daniel Oliver have a dance studio located in Missouri. They have taught Freddie Davis, Floyd Jeter, Louise Bland, and Sarah Carter to dance beautifully. Laura Woodson is head of the Physical Education Department at Virginia State College. She has helped people to lose 40 to 80 lbs. in 7 days. Jack Green is trying to obtain a seat in Congress. He knows two people who might just be able to get it for him. They are Shirley Neblette and Freddie Rather. Both are quite capable of handling their job. So far, however, their plans for sneaking Jack into Congress have been exposed by three secret agents for the United States. Clarence Walker, Russell Eppes, and William Jefferson are the agents to whom we have reference. AlbertTucker and Clyde Wynn plan to expose those dignified seniors who are doing little illegal things to become wealthy. You see, they are two of the sneakiest, slyest newspaper men we have been able to locate. Purchase the next edition of the Sneak Peep and you might find out also. Missouri Birchett and Shirley Oliver have made wonderful homes for their husbands. However, they won ' t tell anyone who they married. We plan to find a way to satisfy our curiosity. Lillie Green and Mary Fitzgerald have unusual occupations. They are coaching the Globe Trotters. Lauraetta Jones is singing her heart out at the Keyke Club in Hawaii. As for us, even though we have acquired enough money to make us rich, we prefer to work and stay young. Sincerely, Barbara Fitzgerald Lois Page 15 WHO’S WHO Alice Hurt Clarence Walker Roy Tucker George Peace Barbara Jennings Edward Fowlkes Bernice Booth Clearance Walker Annette Jennings Lois Paige Frances Jones John Robertson Linwood Stokes Laura Woodson Lillie Green Cornelia Thorton Barbara Fitzgerald John Robertson Mary Fitzgerald Berniece Parham Russell Eppes Lillie Green McCarthy Downs Mary Ferguson Clarence Walker Laura Woodson Howard Hill Paul Robertson Shirley Neblett Winston Guy Christine Parker Howard Hill Berniece Oliver Dexter Neal Ora Lewis Freddie Rather Lauraetta Jones Katherleen Thomas Oneada Johnson Floyd Jeter Robert Harris Missouria Birchette Elise Tucker George Fitzgerald William Jefferson Bernice Booth Theodore Greene Sisters Brothers Cousins Best Dressed Boys Best Dressed Girls Class Braggers Quietest Best Friends Grouchiest Shortest Tallest Songsters Slowest Class Sweethearts Class Friends Happiest Most Businesslike Girls Most Businesslike Boys Best Athletes Best Conversationalists Most Likely to Succeed Best Smiles Best Coiffures Most Contented Class Artists Best Dancers Tardies Most Unconcerned Friendliest Humorous Most Kindhearted Biggest Flirts Craziest Laughs Most Sedate Most Determined Most Mannerable Sweetest Disposition Laziest Neatest Most Dependable Courteous Best Posture Most Talkative Noisiest Most Bashful Most Religious Boy Cheerleaders Avis Hurt William Walker Albert Tucker Ernest Fowlkes Joan Vaughter Jack Greene Clyde Y ates Shirley Neblett Mable Dagner James Stokes William Walker Elsie Tucker Louise Bland George Peace Ernest Fowlkes Herbert Hill Laura Oliver Freddie Davis Thomas Jennings Shirley Oliver Christina Christopher Thomas Jennings Barbara Jennings Carson Featherson George Allen Daniel Oliver Archie Elder Lillian Perry Fred Wilson Clyde Wynn Elwood Jones Shirley Bland Walter Bagley Sarah Carter Karl Fowlkes Helen Eppes Adolphus Greenhill Alvin Brown Sue Mitchell Lucille Stewart Gladys Craft Oneada Johnson Ann Jones Ella Fitzgerald Louise Bland Geraldine Tucker Herbert Hill 16 GEORGE ALLEN WALTER BAGLEY MISSOURIA BIRCHETTE Ambition: Artist Ambition: Artist Ambition: Beautician Industrial Arts Club FBLA, Varsity F. We hope to make dear old Foster glad; That she has helped us along. We will tread the roads with steadfast aims; We ' ll always let right overcome wrong. Now that graduation is getting nearer Instead of being happy we ' re sad; For we know we ' ll miss you dear Foster; We ' ll miss those good times we ' ve had. Chorus Dear Foster, you ' ve made us so happy, And now sadly each of us departs. We ' ll forever cherish your dear name; You ' ll always be dear to our hearts. CLASS POEM The highway of life stretches far before us; Our dreams and destinies lie far ahead; But, we proudly pause, for we have reached a milestone-- Toward this goal our footsteps have lead. Yes, we can now view with pride, The progress made in so short a day; Yet, before us, another tomorrow lies, And we cannot stop along the way. With wise instructions from our parents and teachers, We bravely face the years ahead. No more will be the smooth tasks of high school days, But challenging experiences in their stead. Let us, now upon you, dear parents, teachers, and friends, Our humble gratitude and fond farewells bestow; With faith in ourselves and faith in God, We ask your best wishes as onward we go. The time has come where you as seniors have reached another milestone in your lives. You have gone through many hardships to achieve that of which you have long dreamed. Graduation! At last that dream has been full-filled. Using the topic, Ignorance-No Boastful Bliss, ask yourselves these two important questions as you go out into the world: Is ignorance something to be boasted about? Is it a criterion or a standard by which correct Judgement can be formed for high school students? You are reminded that you have gone to high school to attain a higher education in order to achieve something in society. There have been many changes in education as compared to that of our parents. Today ' s educated man is able to move from one area to another. The educated person is a trained one, and has higher oppor¬ tunities afforded him. Another change has been that of automation. Machines have taken the place of many human beings. Therefore, jobs for the so-called, little man,” have become scarce. To find a place in the industrial world, one must have a knowledge of many things. Sure, Sam Cooke sings about biology. To achieve, a person should be informed. Many of us do not read as we should. As students, we should avoid using the phrase, I don ' t know. This statement is only a profession of ignorance. To be a part of and to contribute to this wonderful world, one should eliminate ignorance and attain a higher education. A Junior 29 SOPHOMORES SECTION A Miss Claudette L. Through hard practice and good coaching, they have developed into some of Foster ' s greatest athletes. In football, Captain Thomas Jennings and Roy Tucker have done an outstanding job of improving the defense of the team. Daniel Oliver ' s great defense plays and 300 Batting Average has made him one of Foster ' s all time great base¬ ball players. It was the same plane that had trans¬ ported many passengers to successful grounds in the land of Useful Living. During our pre-freshman year, there were naturally a few cases of flight sickness, and quite a few were tempted to depart from this grand tour. We were very fortunate to have great celebrities among us. Barbara Fitzgerald, had an opportunity of being crowned Miss Foster in the year of 1956-57. Barbara Jennings, Elsie Tucker and Elwood Jones were winners in the District Mathematics and Science Conference. September, 1957-58, we boarded the plane again, we were deeply depressed because seven of our previous passengers were not with us. This year proved to be a prosperous one. Alice Hurt was runner-up to Miss Home¬ coming.” Barbara Fitzgerald, Lauretta Jones, Elsie Tucker, and John Robertson were participants in the All-State Choir held at Virginia State College. Christinia Christopher participated also. School year of 58-59 was eagerly awaited as ninety-three of us began our flight for the third time. Christene Parker was crowned May Queen.” Again our students participated in All-State with a few additions. They were: Annette Jennings and Joan Vaughter. As Juniors, we were faced with responsibilities, but with only eighty-nine faithful classmates, no task was too great for us to conquer. We, under the leadership of Ernest Fowlkes, as Class President and other qualified officers, succeeded with triumph. We were honored to have Laura Woodson crowned as Miss Homecoming, and Laureatta Jones as May Queen. The biggest event of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme was Fairyland Romance. What could have been a more appropriate theme for our fantasy affair! Now we have less than a year remaining of our tour through Foster High. September, 1960, the date we had been waiting for arrived at last. Seventy-nine of us were considered as being Dignified Seniors. Again we were honored to have as Miss Crewe, Joan Vaughter; Miss Blackstone, Oneada Johnson. . We elected our class officers as follows: President, Barbara Jennings; Vice-President, Christene Parker; Secretary, Laureatta Jones; Assistant-Secretary, Joan Vaughter; Treasurer, Elwood Jones; Chaplain, Elsie Tucker; Reporter, John Robertson; Sgts.-At-Arms, Thomas Jennings and Roy Tucker; Parliamentarian, Cornelia Thorton. We have had our triumphs and failures, but with the help of our sponsors, Miss Martha V. Singleton, Mrs. F. Oliver, Miss C. P. Luck and Miss A. Jones, we treated both as stepping stones to success. Barbara Jennings Ora Lewis Elsie Tucker 57 CLASS DEGREES Some of our classmates have been so diligent in their activities, so outstanding in their various fields, a mere diploma would not compensate them for their arduous hours of toil; so as additional reward, we give degrees to the following: To Joan Vaughter and Christinia Christopher who aspire to be the best nurses there ever were, we give the degree of R.N.
