Foster Bulldog Blackstone, Virginia Foreword Co-Editors’ Message We, of the ' 59 yearbook staff, have worked steadily for many months to produce this edition of the Bulldog. Within these pages we have tried to record the many mem¬ orable events, activities, and accomplishments through words and pictures that have happened to us during our journey through high school. As co-editors, we wish to express our thanks to the entire staff, the administration, the faculty, and the student body for their assiduous co-operation in helping us to make this edition a success. We hope that not only at the present, but in the years to come, this Bulldog will be a treasured keepsake that will re¬ call many happy occasions. Foster, we are fear¬ fully aware of your fitness to meet the challenge of the years ahead. You will take paths in many directions seaking your goals. Having different wants, desires, a wide variety of aptitudes, and abilities to realize these goals you form an in¬ tricate pattern of human lives. Message From the Principal JOSEPH B. PERVALL V •% ' ■ ••• r.: ✓ ' i A • ■A K ..p. w ■ ! • . . - We earnestly hope your goals will be alike in that they all terminate in prosperity, security, peace, and happiness. The manner in which you reach these goals again presents a varied pattern. Some will choose the building trades, others agriculture, others in nursing, cosmetology, teaching, home¬ making, or the learned professions. Each of you will need more training than you have received thus far to reach the top in your chosen field. I hope you will apply yourself to this quickly and earnestly. Yet doing a job well will not in itself bring solace to the soul or peace to the mind. Let me offer three elements which applied will in a measure assure your desired ends. You must have an increasingly higher appreciation for those things spoken two thousand years ago on the Mount of Olives--things that moth will not corrupt nor thieves break through and steal, an unsatisfying hunger for higher idea Is formulated on the principles of the life of Christ, and an adoption of a higher sense of moral and spiritual values, whereby we learn to live peaceably with all men, respecting all men, understanding all men. Our parting prayer is that you keep faith, meet the challenge of the world undaunted, and face tomorrow fearlessly. With the aid of Him who made us all, you will win. ■w f tSsls : tr ff - ' AS ' saAr v CLARENCE STITH - Assistant Principal and Biology MRS. ETHEL L. DAVID FITZGERALD Class History It was September, 1953, an exciting day for 136 eager-beavers arriving on flights from East and West to start their six year educational tour through Foster High School. We were greeted by many phases of knowledge, and we were accepted by the other tourists, who erected high goals for us to attain. Due to financial difficulties, eight of our fellow tourists were unable to continue the journey with us; thus, leaving 128 of us to continue our journey in September, ' 54. We were escorted into the vocational hall and were shown the foundation to many outstanding careers that would make our lives happy and prosperous. The 128 of us continued our journey until the year of ’55. Our membership decreased by twenty-eight persons who decided to turn back. The year 1955 was indeed important! We had finally rid ourselves of the title eager beavers for we were then the Freshman Class of 55. During our Freshman year year we really got into the swing of high school and then in ' 56, we journeyed to the Sophomore Class. Most of us realized, at this point, that we were gradually advancing up the ladder of success. Responsibility was facing us as juniors, but with sixty-three faithful classmates, no task was too great for us to conquer. Our Junior year was vivacious, exciting, and quite a success. We were under the leadership of Clarence Farrar, class president, and other capable officers. We also had the splendid guidance of our Junior Class sponsors, Mrs. E. M. Barbour and Mr. W. H. Sherrill. Five years have now past and time is gradually drawing to an end. We have less than a year remaining of our tour. Alas! Alas! We have reached that long awaited year, our year, the year of 1959. At the top of the ladder stands fifty-seven dignified seniors. Our tour has been educational, enjoyable, and satisfying. We have had our triumphs and failures but we have treated both as stepping stones to success. Graduation from high school ends your first phase of formal education. Feel not that your education stops here for you. Man continually learns for¬ mally or through experience. Your teachers have attempted to instill within you ideals and values. Enter into this new phase of your life with those tools you have gathered in your high school venture. Then you will be able to face squarely the duties, responsibilities, failures, successes, joys, and hopes that befall you. With God as your guide, and education as your foundation, this should be a pleasant and rewarding experience. The following excerpt from Edgar A. Guest’s, It Couldn ' t Be Done, adds what ever encouragement necessary for tackling your problems. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you; one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But buckle in with a bit of a grin. Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you ' ll do it. Bon Voyage, Mrs. Frances W. Wynn W. H. Our ups and downs were many; We’ve known both joy and sorrow; But through the dark gloomy days, We held hopes of a bright tomorrow. One milestone has been reached; Many others still to be met; Amidst life tempests and trials, Dear Foster, we shall not forget. We’ll forever love and esteem our school; Our school mates who are our brothers. The faculty, the principal, the trustees, The staff, and all the others. Now sadly we realize. It is the year of ' 59; Foster-Dear Foster, We must leave you far behind. Yes, we make our exit soon; But in our hearts, there’ll forever remain, Love and loyalty to our school; That laid the foundation for all we shall gain.
