Orange Iackets The Burbank Orange Iackets is one of the largest pep squads in San Antonio. The girls in orange and white have grown to be a very out- standing service organization and have served their community well. They have strived toward higher goals, working to help others and to in- crease their standards of perfect behavior. Miss Gwen Boynton, the sponsor of the Orange Iackets has helped them greatly, guid- ing them in the right direction and devoting her time in sponsoring all their activities. Miss Boyn- ton has been sponsor for five years and has helped the O. I.'s gain their success in many ways. The requirements of an O. I. are to be in the ninth grade or higher, to have a C grade aver- age or above, to have a semester of pup train- ing, and to be able to pass the written and marching tests. Each girl must be voted on by the Orange Iacket members. Dues of S5 per sem- Girls' Physical Education Department Girls' physical education, taught by Miss Clara Watts, Mrs. Barbara Scott and Miss Gwen Boynton, has aided many girls in becoming healthy, useful and happy individuals. Classes are taught six periods a day with two classes meeting each period. The girls par- ticipate in such organized games as softball, vol- leyball, basketball, soccer, line soccer, and tumb- ling. There are a number of activities used for students restricted to light activity. The regular program consists of both strenuous and non- strenuous sports, games and recreational activi- ties. This is done in order to help meet the needs of every individual. The object of the P. E. department is to have each girl accept responsibility and self discip- line, to conduct themselves in a ladylike man- ner, to practice sportsmanship, and to learn the skills of sports. rt- ' p 0 Watts, Clara Dell West, Roy White, Harry A. Journalism Work, patience, concentration, and an abun- dant amount of midnight oil are some of the in- gredients used up by a devoted journalism stu- dent. Work makes the job after it is finished something of which to be proud. Patience to carry on when the going gets rough is at times valuable. Concentration is necessary to provide worth- while reading material. Midnight oil is mostly used when deadlines must be met or when an added amount of in- terest is contributed to the project. A These and many more essentials of journal- ism were used in this year's two yearbook class- es and journalism class. Journalism Producing an annual for a high school consists of hard work and the ambition to get the book out to its public. But the greatest task of all is getting it sold to the students. The goal set for sales of Barks for '57 was 700. The total sales were 644 books. During the campaign the Bark staff and Journalism classes tried to get through to the students. Posters were made to inform you, the student body, of the time limit and price of your annual. Daily announcements were made over the PA not only by our representatives and vice principal, but by Mr. Terrel F. Gates as well. Names of persons buying your school book were placed in the cafeteria forming chains so that others could be inspired to support their book. At the latter part of our campaign we the staff con- sidered offering a grand prize hoping this would attract more sales. After all of our efforts were used and the dead-line reached still our goal was not reached. Why? Is there no interest in supporting your school? Or does anyone care if Burbank is known as the school without a newspaper and maybe without an annual?
