Robinson, Mr. Thomas B. Portwood and Mr. L. W. Fox have come across many and different pro- blems. Their contributions towards educational pro- gress have been many, and all for the purpose of providing better means for administering knowledge to all the students attending independent schools in San Antonio. When decisions must be made for bettering this system every school must be taken into considera- tion. In doing so, the faculty and students welfare must also be considered. Thus the three men hold a position that is not any ordinary job, but requires from them the best they can offer. 5 'le if ,,f il 5 .........i1m, if ..... ::q' an M 55. K.. am' Q as ei 4493? MR. TERREL F. GATES-PRINCIPAL Twenty years ago, when the doors of Luther Burbank Vocational High School were open to administer knowledge, Mr. Terrel F. Gates started working towards higher goals for the school's student body and faculty. During this time many changes and adjustments have been made for the betterment of our school. Mr. Gates heads Luther Burbank High Schoo1's family to the best of his ability. And for this we are extremely grateful. 6 woo .NARDS STREET SAN ANTONIO 4 TEXAS LUTHER BURBANK VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL May 29th, 1957 :I Dear Senrors Graduatrons Endmgs Begmnrngs all pro duce feelrngs of Joy mmgled w1th regret We regret to break many of those tres of frlendshrp whlch have grven us strength and assurance through the years and yet at the same tlme we fmd ourselves eager to test our dreams and try out new opportunl l19S As I look at you today I grve thanks for the prlvrlege of knowmg you and worklng wrth you You have been a great group and you carry Wlth you my prayer for your growth understandmg and ab1l1ty to solve lrfe s problems as you meet them Srncerely yours X Terrell F. I. 6 ,M Besides acting in the .H ,xl absence of the princi- fjp! jf Z pal, Mr. Herman Vetter, ' vice principal, has the job of f-1A.f acting the part of dean of boys. In his office many calls have been made by boys with school problems as well as person- al difficulties. The advice given by Mr. Vetter is sometimes taken at heart. Other times it is given in vain. To him our hats come off, for when a Burbanker is in need of a true friend and advisor, girls as well as boys, can always be sure of Mr. Vetter's friend- ship. MR. P. Y. GILBREATH Mr. P. Y. Gilbreath is counselor for Luther Burbank Vocational High School. His job falls under three mu- jor phases: educational guidance, vo- cational guidance, personal guidance. Educational guidance consists of the selection of proper courses for graduation, college entrance and vo- cational preparation. Helping stu- dents find ways of making adjust- ments when they have difficulty in passing courses fall into this phase. Vocational guidance deals with the study of occupational fields, selecting, preparing for, entering into, and pro- gressing in a chosen vo- cation. 8 MISS MARY ALICE NOONAN Be available for any odd jobs which arise. This is one of the many responsibilities which occupy Miss Mary Alice Noonan, dean of girls. During her day's work Miss Noonan goes through the pro- cess of many developments. Planning, suggesting, and scheduling activities with the students and sponsors is most- ly worked out with her assist- ance. Many times girls hold con- ferences with her to look at their problems here at school as well as at home. All in all it is a constant task of rebuild- ing---ideals, habits, choice of friends .... Personal uidance Q deals with the personal problems and adjust- ments of individual students. 1-sr BROOM, GEORGIA Recording of attendance for the en- tire school is left to Mrs. Georgia Broom and her office aids. This work is done throughout the school year. Beginning with the first period right through the sixth there are student aides to be trained and worked with as they learn the many aspects of this most en- grossing occupation. tsp? PATTERSON , CAMILLE Besides doing the regular work of an office secretary, Mrs Camille Patterson is in charge of permanent records of each student in school, dropped or grad- uated. The withdrawals, drops, and the program card file are her responsibility. Every month she also fills out the vet- erans forms. All in all she leads a very busy bus- iness life working for the deans. MISS MARY IO MEYER Miss Mary lo Meyer fills the position of general clerk. Her duties are many. Typing letters, transcripts, taking dicta- tion, and filing tal-ce most of the days work. Assorting mail, furnishing sup plies needed by the various offices in school also become part of her job. MRS. DOROTHY NELL WEST Mrs. Dorothy Nell West serves our principal, Terrell F . Gates, not only as a secretary, but also acts as a receptionist in the main office. Persons interested in Burbank and its student body conduct most of their business with Mr. Gates. Thus Mrs. West is kept busy throughout the day. .rf-Q.. ...ulf if A M ff u ADAMS. IUD ALLEN, ELLEN MARIE AVEY, W. C. AVRETT, NELL BARRY, BERNICE English Webster's Dictionary English--our native tongue--as belonging to, or pertaining to, the language or the people of England, or those descend- ed from them ...... Has anyone stopped to give his own definition of English? This is one subject we use every day. lt is the combination of many words which are used while carrying on a conversation. Our thoughts put on paper are carried forward in English sentences. During the English class the language is brought to the students by the instructor from a text. The correct usage of nouns, pronouns. verbs, prepositional phrases and so forth are introduced during the class period. Three years of English are required in order to be graduated from high school. Those entering college continue toward another year of English education. Clark, Frank D. Cobb, Mary Louise Conner, Clare Alice CICfWfOrd, Eloise, L, W barrow, Shirley -L . W , i Math Y Mathematics has always been considered a method y ll of finding oneself asleep while teacher trys to explain the ' ' significance of the many numbers in an algebra, geometry f or a trigonometry problem. But to others this course of art in numbers holds many and different mysteries. While in , the process of solving this course of problems, knowledge is gained. tx ' A . -Q Some students complete their math ca- ftp g, ,.,, ., ,A ,ll 1 1 . k ' if 1 reers after attending classes in general mathematics. Teacher says it takes intel- H lectual curiosity to get a pupil in a math- ! i J. ematics class. The subject of numbers is not only for learning HOW to work out problems, but WHY it is done in the manner in which it is solved. For this reason curiosity must be in mind when the process of solving a math- ematics problem is on hand. Mr. Herald Williams' commercial class pictured above, is one of several classes conducted in the department this semester. The basic steps of business math are taught in commercial math I. These steps are car- ried on to the second part of this subject. And thus a year of business math is com- pleted. Business For students who plan to make the world of business a career, our business department offers excellent courses to aid the future business men and women on their way to suc- cess. Burbank has courses in shorthand, typing, office prac- tice, D. E., and bookkeeping open to assist students interested in this field of work. Dean, David N. Dulin, Iames If a business career is in mind this education in business while in high school will prove worth-while. Instead of having to pay to get this training at business college students here are fortunate enough to obtain it without any charge. Even if a business career does not fit into the future of a Burbanker's life these courses prove to be a great asset. Later on in life when it becomes necessary to go out into the world to work for a living, office work will prove valuable. Positions in the business world will pay well, if the person applying for the iob offered has adequate training. Students either taking a business course or having com- pleted their business training have the opportunity of entering the Business Club which is sponsored by Mrs. Olidene Mc- Dermand. Field trips are made by sponsor and members to different business establishments in the city. ln this way mem- bers are given the chance to see what goes on in the world of business. The arousing of interest in the business world and ambition for advancement is the main object of this or- ganization. Elmore, E. L. Fairbanks, Elaine Franz, Ted R. Z The Future Homemal-:ers of America organization at Burbank High School is sponsored by Miss Darrow. Members must have taken home making I, at least, to be able to join this club. During the year the girls hold cake sales, cooking contests and many more activities. Homemaking Department Miss Shirley Darrow and Mrs. Millie Moran this year teach homemaking at Burbank High. Miss Darrow heads the depart- ment for future homemakers. Homemaking courses start from the beginners homemaking I to the advanced course of home economics VIII. During the summer vacations this course is offered as a project and extra credits may be gained. Most of the knowledge gained in this course is accomplished through experience. Like most classes The more you put into your work, the more you will get from it in return. Cooking and sewing are the main topics for work. Meals are planned according to budgets, menues and diets. The student has assigned jobs when laboratory days come along. For sewing most girls make blouses, skirts, dresses and even formal gowns. Some of the boys taking this course have come out with new shirts and with the ability to cook a good meal for themselves. Koehler Arthur A Latham, Louise Lucas, William H. Myler, Charles , Niedortqljoris History Social studies give to the students, further insight and added interest to everyday world affairs. This study gives appreciation of past events making history study material for students in the present. World history recreates the fame of men and women long before us and allows us to compare their accomplishments and failures with the occuring efforts in our time. American history teaches students to know their country better and to appreciate its freedoms. Here pupils are taught the meaning of patriotism and are instilled with a pride in the past triumphs and defeats of our country. Last but not least comes civics. The future citizens of America are brought to understand the func- tions of our government. Duties of the president of our U.S.A. are explained to the class along with the duties of the citizen. The privilege of voting is fully brought out in this course. These and many more topics are the studies involved in history. 18 Science Nature is explored during biology, physiology and chemistry classes everyday. It is our good fortune to be equipped with the necessary material which is needed in conducting these explorations. Under the guidance of Mr. Frank D. Clark, chemistry teacher, our science department qualifies to be one of the better equipped laboratories. Micro- scope, slides, reading material and utensils are provided for the students use. Our present instructors are well experienced in the field of science, Miss Marguerite Yaeger has had several opportunities of traveling out oi our state and country. Upon returning to Burbank she has contributed to her pupils part of that knowledge which she gained from her experience in traveling. OCONNELL MEDA PARISH. BONNIE PIEPER, ALFRED H. CHARLES SPLITTGERBER. MARIE SPOON, CELIA ANN STEIN, STANLEY SWEET, BILL Shops Luther Burbank Vocational High School . . . a trade school in which students are prepared for the technical arts and crafts. Burbank's shops contribute a great part to make this a vocational school. Boys have the privilege and good fortune of receiving training which may prove useful to them after graduation. Body and paint, body and fender, radio and electric, carpentry, wood- work, metal, drafting, and commercial art are a few of the many opportunities offered to students attending BHS. From these fields of craftsmanship many boys have obtained enough training to go out into the world after graduating and retain a good job. Others through interest and study have gained for themselves a lone busi- ness establishment. These are part of the many organizations at Burbank that make our vo- cational school something to brag about. During some of the periods of the days the boys taking Body 6. Paint do some work on fac- ulty members' cars. Well-painted cars come out of this shop. With the guidance of Mr. Hussell W. Gigstead these boys learn the trade of working on automo biles. -.wid Journalism Work, patience, concentration, and an abun- dant amount of midnight oil are some of the in- gredients used up by a devoted journalism stu- dent. Work makes the job after it is finished something of which to be proud. Patience to carry on when the going gets rough is at times valuable. Concentration is necessary to provide worth- while reading material. Midnight oil is mostly used when deadlines must be met or when an added amount of in- terest is contributed to the project. A These and many more essentials of journal- ism were used in this year's two yearbook class- es and journalism class. Journalism Producing an annual for a high school consists of hard work and the ambition to get the book out to its public. But the greatest task of all is getting it sold to the students. The goal set for sales of Barks for '57 was 700. The total sales were 644 books. During the campaign the Bark staff and Journalism classes tried to get through to the students. Posters were made to inform you, the student body, of the time limit and price of your annual. Daily announcements were made over the PA not only by our representatives and vice principal, but by Mr. Terrel F. Gates as well. Names of persons buying your school book were placed in the cafeteria forming chains so that others could be inspired to support their book. At the latter part of our campaign we the staff con- sidered offering a grand prize hoping this would attract more sales. After all of our efforts were used and the dead-line reached still our goal was not reached. Why? Is there no interest in supporting your school? Or does anyone care if Burbank is known as the school without a newspaper and maybe without an annual? Your Bark staff would like to know the answer to these questions. lf you can answer them how about telling us! Swindler, Gerald A. The girls in orange and white have grown to be a very out- standing service organization and have served their community well. They have strived toward higher goals, working to help others and to in- crease their standards of perfect behavior. Miss Gwen Boynton, the sponsor of the Orange Iackets has helped them greatly, guid- ing them in the right direction and devoting her time in sponsoring all their activities. Miss Boyn- ton has been sponsor for five years and has helped the O. I.'s gain their success in many ways. The requirements of an O. I. are to be in the ninth grade or higher, to have a C grade aver- age or above, to have a semester of pup train- ing, and to be able to pass the written and marching tests. Each girl must be voted on by the Orange Iacket members. Classes are taught six periods a day with two classes meeting each period. The girls par- ticipate in such organized games as softball, vol- leyball, basketball, soccer, line soccer, and tumb- ling. There are a number of activities used for students restricted to light activity. The regular program consists of both strenuous and non- strenuous sports, games and recreational activi- ties. This is done in order to help meet the needs of every individual. The object of the P. They lead the group and control the func- tions which occur during the year. The Colonel, the highest ranking officer. is the president and leader when drill- ing. The lieutenant colonel is the vice- president and takes over command in the absence of the colonel. The major is the recording secretary and is the third highest ranking officer. The cap- tain, fourth ranking. is the correspond- ing secretary. The treasurer has one of the biggest jobs of all, keeping the records of all the money that goes in and comes out of the treasury. There are three first lieutenants who take the jobs of sgt. at arms and supply offi- cers. The five second lieutenants are responsible for the jobs of reporter, his- torian, parliamentarian, grade record- er and typist. Each of the officers are expected to keep the girls in order and to retain discipline in all the activities in which the organization participates. The officers for the year 1956-57 are Mary Worthing---colonel, Iudy Riley-lt. colonel, Ioanne Schnelle- major, Aida Rodriguez-captain. Lynn Berry, Olga Rodriguez, and Carol Schaefer. first lieutenants, Diane Rus- sell. Clara Ybarbo, Margie Aaron, Iudy Riley Lt. Colonel 0fH6'ff?.5' I Mfllf Evelyn Townsend, and Elaine Scott. second lieutenants. The officers are elected by the Orange Iackets, impartial judges, and members of the administration. They are judged on leadership, posture, voice, marching ability, and several other traits which are compulsory to their being a good officer. The four cheerleaders are respon- sible for the spirit of the school as a whole, They are elected from the Orange Iackets and are judged in very much the same way as the offi- cers. lt is their duty to lead yells and to maintain the school spirit and sportsmanship of the student body. The cheerleaders this year attended cheer- leader school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. August 26-31. While at the clinic, they learned new yells which they later taught to Burbank Students. They improved their methods of cheerleading and brought home with them first place honors won in the daily and final competitions held between the cheerleaders of the different schools from all over Texas, The cheerleaders this year are Bitsy Reding. Their first service to the school was helping with registration of students. The girls typed and assisted the faculty and administration with various jobs. Football season, which began in the middle of September, supplied the girls with another job which was both pleasing and serviceable. For the second time in the history of Luther Burbank Yocational High School, the Bulldog Basketball team won the District and B1-District Cham- pionships. I In the playoff for District title, the Burbank cagers defeated San Antonio Tech High School with a score of 69 to 55. Getting the Bi-District title, the Bulldogs defeated Thomas Iefferson 64 to 56. Burbank's basketball team was defeated in the vie for the Regional Championship by the Austin Maroons. The Bulldogs have completed in the playoffs only one other time in the history of the school. In 1939 the Burbank team won Regional but was defeat- ed in the state tournament. Ronald Durbon and I. L. Boatright were the top scorers of the season with Leo Mendoza making a name for himself as Burbank's main ball handler. The entire Bulldog basketball squad, along with their coach, Charlie Shannon, deserves hardy congratulations for producing a team of which all Burbankers may be proud, not only for their successful scores, but for the spirit in which the individual team members played in the game. 226 Bill Horlen Boatright hooks for two points. - Leo Mendoza Horlen shoots against Harlan- dale.
