In October, following a weiner roast and watermelon party, everyone became acquainted with his duties, the budget was set up, and the arrange- ment of the yearbook was planned. A password was chosen from the initials of the staff members. More ideas were obtained at the meeting sponsored by the American Yearbook Company at Cape Girardeau; one being the advantages of summer delivery of the yearbooks, to which the student body accepted by a vast majority. Our first task was to obtain enough advertisements to pay for a large part of the cost of the yearbook. During the year Mary Underwood was added to the staff as assistant photographer. Then all the materials for the yearbook had to be obtained. Pictures were taken, write-ups typed, division sheets drawn, and finally the last minute rush for the first sixteen pages to be sent in by March 9. At the Queen Coronation in March, Corine Shrum was crowned Cardinal Queen. More staff meetings, and by June 9 all eighty pages of the yearbook were sent in. The result -- our Cardinal Yearbook of 1953. J5 DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS Mr. B. L. VanAmburg B.S. in Education Mr. Ben L. Guard; Richard Smith, Guard; John Englehart, Captain. Forward; Norman Ken- ner, Center; Edward Graham, Forward; Dale Kirkpatrick, Guard; Nelson Davenport, Guard. One of the greatest highlights of the Cardinals' season was the Invitational Tournament held at Lutesville, pre- ceding Christmas, for the first time in several years. The Cardinals seated fourth, and playing the under dog role, managed by playing heads up and hustling basketball, to wrest the first place trophy from the hands of Zalma by a score of 67 to 61. In the first two tourn- ament games they defeated Williamsville and Marquand, respectively. After Christmas the team lost several of its players, which made the remaining games more difficult until the team once again hit their stride at the close of the season. The Cardinals met the strong St. Mary's team of Cape Cir- ardeau in the Sub-regional Tournament held at Oran. Lutesville was defeated only after battling on even terms with St. Marys throughout the game with the exception of the last few seconds with St. Marys barely pulled ahead 44 to 39. Coach Johnson and his team played one of the strongest schedules in South- east Missouri. Lutesville will have six lettermen back with them next season, Norman Kenner, Edward Graham, Richard Smith, Juniors; and three Sophomores, Dale Kirkpatrick, Nelson Davenport, and Glen Stone. Lutesville High School may well be proud of Coach Johnson and the Cardinal's Team. 49 SECOND TEAM Kneeling: Jerome Gaines, Larry Crader, Kenneth Shrum, Gene Robins, Deon Liley, Paul David Thomas.
