This record was compiled because of a stellar defense led by Carolyn Gordon's outstanding rebounding, Ida Belle Smith's hustle and Margaret Rogers all round play in her first year on the team and the amazing ability to move the ball up the floor to the forwards. This great defense held all opponent to an average of only 32.4 points per game. The offense was led by Jan Gordon's average of 25.5 points per game. The beauty of this years offense was the balance that we had to go with Jan's scoring with Sherry Howard's average of 11.4 per game, Willie Nell Davis's average of 8.8, Karen Dunham's 6.7, and Beverly Chapman's 6.1. This is an average of 47.9 points per game for the team as a whole. This year's team defeated Glennville girls two games, both victories coming by one point with the game in Glennville going into overtime. This had not been done in more than a decade and was the highlight of this years’ season. The play of the boys was characterized by excellent teamwork and shooting. Our boys consistently out-rebounded taller opponents and were deadly when fast-break opportunities were possible. Six players played most of the time and their scoring was as follows: NAME POINTS AVERAGE Larry Chapman 483 17.3 Odis Harter 377 14.5 Larry Murray 328 11.7 J.B. Swindell 197 6.5 Cecil Long 98 5.5 Darvin Strickland 134 4.9 In the Georgia Teachers College Invitational Tournament we defeated Statesboro Region 2A champions for third place. As a team we scored 1656 points an average of 59.2 points per game while our opponents scored 1346 points or an averageof 48.1 points per game. This team has been called one of the best that has been produced at our school by some people and at times have really been a great team. The boys won the championship of Region 3C by defeating Odum in the finals at Hinesville 51-46. This makes them the first champions of Region 3C and entitles them to compete in the State tournament in Macon. •
