DRIVE, DEDICATION, AND TALENT When asked about the 1985 foot- ball Lions, an optimist might say, “Well, at least none of our players were injured in the playoffs.” Of course, with a 1-8 record there was little danger of that happening. All joking aside, the season was less than expected, but there were many bright spots that served to make it an enjoyable learning experience for everyone involved. “The record was disappointing,” said senior captain Phil McBride when asked about the team, “but | had a lot of fun, and | wouldn’t think twice about playing with the same Ludlow Opp 14. Their conduct made it diffi- cult to criticize the team despite its poor performance. The annual Thanksgiving day game with Palmer, which was played un- der a freezing torrential downpour at Chick Patullo Memorial Field, epitomized the Lions’ season. Their drive, dedication, and talent were all apparent, but they came up just short. Chip Harrington for the extra point. Football

DETERMINATION AGAINST INEXPERIENCE “Despite our winless record, the team displayed a lot of determina- tion and desire which aided each runner to improve his her personal time over the course of the season,” said Coach “Spike” Clancy. Al- though the squad often had to face teams three times their size in num- bers these dedicated runners gave it their all each meet. With every member of the team returning, ex- cept senior Tony Senecal, Coach Clancy forsees a brighter future for Ludlow’s cross country program. There is a distinct possibility that the All-league star Tung Bui. Ludlow Opp 15 Belchertown 50 18 South Hadley 45 18 Longmeadow 45 20. Agawam 39 20 =Palmer 39 20 |. Monson 41 21. The brightest points of the 1985 season incuded performances by the only veteran, junior Tung Bui. Tung was undefeated on the Ludlow course with times of 15’30’’, 14’58”, 14'56”, and 15 04’. He was also im- pressive at the Western Massachu- setts Championships with an overall finish of 25th. Ludlow, as a team, placed 14th at the Western Mass. Championships. Perhaps the position does not show it, but the runners of the eighty-five season should be credited for their courage to overcome their small numbers and inexperience.
