WELL DONE LADY LIONS Even though this season marked only the second year that the girls’ varsity soccer team was competing in the tougher “A” division, they had an outstanding season. Their over-all record was 12-2-3, leaving them in second place. This finish was not at all unexpected: as Coach Dalessio said in the early weeks of the season, “| think that they are capable of coming in first or second place, it would take a major collapse in order for it not to happen.” Throughout the entire season, the strong effort put forth by the Lady Lions helped them capture their best record in 10 years. No where was this more evident than in their four con- secutive shutouts against Minne- chaug, 1-0; Holyoke, 1-0; Northamp- i se — aaa 5 vi ton, 4-0; and Chicopee Comp, 7-0. This type of play allowed them to defeat West Springfield 3-2 in order to gain the Western Mass. cham- pionship all before falling to Marl- borough by a score of 1-0 in the Central Mass. tournament. Providing leadership for the team were senior tri-captains Jody Davig- 10 Taconic non, Patty Skowronek, and Luanne Varao. The offensive strike was lead by junior Pam Socha, who finished the season with twelve goals and six assists for a total of 10 points. Goalie Sue Jerz was given the MVP award for her tremendous school record of eight shut-outs in net; meanwhile, senior Patty Skowronek was voted tournament MVP. Best offensive player was awarded to Stephanie Mercier, and Best Defensive was Pam Socha. Senior Jody Davignon received the Coaches Award. Phil Dalessio returned as head coach with Jake Socha lending some extra assistance. Congratulations to Coach Dalessio and the Lady Lions for an outstanding season. oO x) 7c Ludlow West Springfield Westfield East Longmeadow Classical Cathedral Amherst Agawam Minnechaug Holyoke Northampton Chicopee Comp. DRIVE, DEDICATION, AND TALENT When asked about the 1985 foot- ball Lions, an optimist might say, “Well, at least none of our players were injured in the playoffs.” Of course, with a 1-8 record there was little danger of that happening. All joking aside, the season was less than expected, but there were many bright spots that served to make it an enjoyable learning experience for everyone involved. “The record was disappointing,” said senior captain Phil McBride when asked about the team, “but | had a lot of fun, and | wouldn’t think twice about playing with the same Ludlow Opp 14. Their conduct made it diffi- cult to criticize the team despite its poor performance. The annual Thanksgiving day game with Palmer, which was played un- der a freezing torrential downpour at Chick Patullo Memorial Field, epitomized the Lions’ season. Their drive, dedication, and talent were all apparent, but they came up just short. Chip Harrington for the extra point. Football
