Carol Fernandes Pat Tetrault, Editor ; EAS : re Pad pe ey ; “Regina Tenerowicz . -Roseanna Lopes Dedication Miss Olive Brooks Seeggeet cent we tteepesee ne aff The many years of dedicated service which Miss Olive Brooks has given to the students of Ludlow High can never be fully appreciated or repaid. Her sincere interest in us students and ‘invaluable aid in guiding and shaping our lives has instilled Miss Brooks deeply and fondly in our memories. Attending Radcliffe College, Miss Brooks chose a history major, and later received her masters degree at Boston College. After teaching for two years in a small Rhode Island school house, Miss Brooks came to teach at Ludlow where she has devotedly worked for nearly forty years. As a teacher and as a guidance director, Miss Brooks has always shown an interest in student activities and has been a guiding force in all our endeavors. Therefore we, the class of 1968, dedicate the 1968 Ludlow: Lion to Miss Olive Brooks—to her conscien- tious efforts as a teacher, to her awareness of our needs and constant willingness to help, and to her unselfish dedication to us, her students. John J. Hurley, Principal Principal’s Message To the Class of 1968 I extend my congratulations on the successful com- pletion of your high school career. Your sound leadership and high level cit- izenship has been reflected throughout the entire student body. In your aca- demic and extracurricular pursuits you have contributed much to the school. As you prepare to meet the challenge of the future let me remind you that the real value of education is the practical investment you can make from yourself into it; what you take from it is as much as you give to it. It is my hope that your years at Ludlow High School have provided you with the necessary academic and moral background to pursue your future goals with faith and confidence. - Grattan Rooney, Assistant Principal Assistant Principal’s Message The Class of 1968 has completed a fine record here in all phases of school life and we congratulate you in- dividually and as a class for being part of another proud chapter in the life of Ludlow High School. You have shown initiative, obedience, and a desire to be- come good citizens. These characteristics are now a part of your makeup and should be excellent guides for you in this changing world. We hope your success here will be carried into adulthood and that you will continue to meet the many challenges of life in the pattern which you started here. Good luck. Hugh O. MacFarlane, Superintendent of Schools Superintendent's Message In this age of almost undreamed of scientific advancement and knowledge, your high school diploma represents an achievement of great importance to your future. The era of “success without schooling” is on the wane, and education has become increasingly necessary to the fulfillment of ambition. It is our hope that the training you have received will prove to be a firm and solid foundation upon which to build a lifetime of achievement. Even more, perhaps, we hope that you may have been inspired to a continuing search for knowledge. I suggest that personal accomplishments built upon a dedica- tion to have a vital concern for others will enable you to master the art of successful living. And so my highest hope for you, the Class of 1968, is that you have the greatest success and happiness in the future. Sincerely, Hugh O. Throughout the formative years of high school the class is molded and shaped into a single unit with its own identity. The class of ’68 has now achieved this status. We can now be proud of what we gave to each other, whether it be in knowledge, guidance, or spirit. We know that someday we will have all gone our sep- arate ways. We will be spread across the nation and around the world in occupations so different, that at a glance a stranger would remark that we have nothing at all in common. This would not be true. If he looked deeper, he would see that destiny has made us a unit. We have all given and will all receive from the other. The Booster Day rally began at 6:30 p.m. and featured the death of a true- to-life opposing Spartan team member. The cause of death was a blazing bon- fire. Following the rally, the dance, which featured the Innkeepers, was held from 8:00 until 11:00 p.m. Autumn dec- orations were in evidence as a large crowd turned out to lead the Lions on their victory march. or Bonnie Poremba, Dorerline Person, and Judy Neill. The se- niors were: Claude Jueckstock, Ron Cabey, Dick McCarron, Manny Gon- calves, Mike Fillion, Auggie Calheno, Ron Almeida, Dennis Goncalves, and team captain, Linda Alves. Throughout the years Ludlow High has reigned as the Soccer Champion, and has been able to boast of an exceptional soccer record. This year the team successfully maintained their position of honor. While playing in eigh- teen contests, including the Western Mass. Tournament and State Champi- onship games, Coach Ray Yando’s team was untied and undefeated. The team captured many honors for Ludlow. They won the Pioneer Val- ley League Championship for the tenth time to remain the only team which has been awarded this title. They then went on to win the Western Mass. Championship for the eighth time by defeating Technical High School 3-0. Maintaining their unbeaten record, they defeated the Eastern Mass. Cham- pion, Medford High, 2-1 in a breath-taking contest which consisted of four overtime periods. This victory re-established Ludlow as the State Charnpion which was their fourth such title in five years. Credit for the victory goes sargely to junior Tony Goncalves, who scored the winning goal on a penalty kick. Ludlow High was well represented on the Pioneer Valley All-Star Team and All-Western Mass. Soccer Team. The first team of the Pioneer Valley All-Stars consisted of seniors Dick McCarron, Auggie Calheno, Mike Fill- ion, and’ Lindo Alves, and senior Dennis Goncalves and junior Tom Teix- eira were nominated to the second team. Those who received honorable mention were Ron Cabey, Claude Jueckstock, and Tony Goncalves. Dick McCarron, Auggie Calheno, and Lindo Alves were named to the first team of the All-Western Mass. Soccer team. On the second team were Mike Fillion and Tony Goncalves. Honorable mention went to Tom Teix- eira and Manny Goncalves. This year’s soccer team had an explosive offense backed by a steady de- fense. The offense scored 61 goals while the defense allowed only 14 to be scored by the opposition. Senior Claude Jueckstock played brilliantly, and was credited with nine shut-outs. The leading scorer for Ludlow this year was Lindo Alves who had four- teen goals, bringing his four year total to RRs Tom Teixeira and Mike Fillion were next with twelve goals each. Tony Goncalves made nine. In assists, Tony was the leader with seventeen, followed by Tom Teixeira with nine, and Lindo with seven. Junior Dance The Junior Class officially opened their 67-68 so- cial season on November 17, 1967 with an over- whelming success at the annual Junior Dance. Enter- tained by the Blue Bayous, a local group known par- ticularly for their use of psychedelic effects, about 600 students were amazed at the unusual decor in which the entire gymnasium was decorated. “Flower Power” was undoubtedly a perfect name for the dance. Kathy Stanuch and Gary Gebo. Hi-Y Show The 1967 Hi-Y Talent Show was presented accord- ing to tradition, on Thanksgiving eve. The theme of the production was Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” with senior Carl Ericksberg as “Johnny Carsick”. The Class of ’68 was represented by Gail Merkel, Jay Bow- man, Dolly Fernandes, and John Mucha. Two of the rock ’n’ roll bands, the Innkeepers and Vigilantes, had seniors Tom Boduch, Gary Blue, and Glenn Stockwell in their groups. Members of the Hi-Y entertained be- tween acts with skits, mostly in the form of television commercials. Prizes were awarded to Jay and Linda Bowman for their modern dance, Craig and Bryan Abrahamson and Lynn Freiberg who sang “California Dreamin’ ” and “It’s Raining’, Dolly Fernandes who sang ‘“‘Some- body to Love”, and John Mucha, Frank Socha, and Lloyd Askew who played two jazz instrumentals. Despite a losing season, the Patullomen were a constant harassment to the opposi- tion. The seniors on this year’s squad comprised the nucleus of these fierce competitiors. Kenny and Carl Ericksberg, playing left and mght ends, posed a constant threat as they continually reached for those “long bombs.” At the season’s end, Carl (or was it Kenny?) was named to the ranks of the All-Suburban League team. Halfback Ray Lavoie showed great speed and agility in eluding enemy tack- lers, as did backs Jerry Young, Mark Dorval, and Alex Macutkiewicz. The big men up front for the Lions were John Alves, Bill Dziedzinski, Colin Smith, and “Betu” Cri- sostomo, who sustained an ankle injury early in the season. Tough, hard-nosed linebacker Bill Davis con- sistently gave the front line its greatest strength all season. While missing much of the season because of inju- ries, Bill Williamson must also be named as a tremen- dous asset to the Patullomen. Bill’s drive and initiative sparked the squad to victory in past seasons. By combining talents, efforts, and the desire to win, along with the leadership of Coach Patullo, the Lions achieved victory this year in a manner that cannot be expressed by wins and losses. se APOE er i set EEE Ss pence ageerre , tithe Hel uss i secs st OF rr ° agent opts B ao 4 Bre ‘ re , i is ia aehener” sniiienntisniite oo ru N be R - Fe rT ® s and bears it. The annual Senior Show, better known as “The Happening °68”, thoroughly pleased a packed audience of students, parents, teachers, and friends. As the curtain rose, however, the audience was unaware of the weeks of preparation that had mold- ed the show. Work first started on the show during the week following Christmas vacation. Under the di- rection of Mr. William Mullins, a class ballot deter- mined the co-chairmen of the event, David Walls and Kathleen Stanuch. Chairmen were then selected to head the various committees. They were: Theme— Germaine Leits; Eligibility—Darlene Fernandes; Pro- gram covers—Claudia Ewick; Programs—Marian Bonsiewicz; Make-up—Laurette Zolty; Snow Sculp- ture—Barbara Poremba; Stage crew—Henry Leonczyk. Those students taking part in the show began to develop and perfect their acts. Weekly rehearsals, heid on Wednesdays and Thursdays, were conducted under the supervision of senior class advisors in order to check the progress of the various acts. On Febru- ary 15, a dress rehearsal was given for the benefit of the senior citizens of the surrounding area and the nuns in nearby parochial schools. Held in the after- noon, the cost of transportation for the guests was provided by the senior class; refreshments were also served under the guidance of Miss Susan Watkins. The following day was one of final preparation. The snow sculpture committee busily completed their snow creation labled, “A Whale of a Snow.” As the show opened that night, the audience witnessed a va- riety of acts, from jazz instrumental to comedy skits. When the class had completed both performances all agreed that the “Happening” had been a “Whale of a Show.” Christine Swienton in the skit “A Taste of Honey.” Ray Lavoie as one of the hosts of “Happening ’68.” Kathy Alves, Laurie Zolty, and Janet Hageman in “Making Whoopee.” The Happening Tom Boduch, Tony Filipe, Mike Geboskie, Rodney Baillargeon, and Richard Sasur perform their jazz instrumental. Our varsity hockey team consisted of players from each of the four classes. Senior members on the team were Walter Stupak, Robert Livermore, Steve Stolarz, Gene Tokarz, and Jerry White. The record for the season was fifteen wins, four loss- es, and no ties. This year the team tied the modern schoolboy record for the most consecutive victories (12). The leading scorer for 1967-68 was junior Tom Teixeira with seventeen goals and eleven assists. John Bissaillon, another junior, led the team with four con- secutive shutouts. His average of goals given up per game was 1.50, the best in the Wright Division. In the Western Mass. Tournament our hockey team defeated Agawam for the first tournament victory ever. However, we lost the following two games—the first to Chicopee by a score of 3-1; the second to Classical by a score of 3-0. Defenseman Walter Stupak was chosen for the All- Western Mass. Team. As defending Valley Wheel champions, the Lions started off the season without losses, but due to the fierce league competition they finished with a 10-3 Wheel record for second place in the Valley Wheel, and a 13-9 overall mark. Because of the tough Wheel competition, a playoff was necessary to decide which team would gain the District 4 tournament berth. In the playoff game Ludlow finally edged East Longmeadow 3-2 in the 11—inning thniller behind the solid pitching of sophomore Joe Boduch and senior Ray Lavoie, who received credit for the win. On the following evening the tired Lions faced Westfield in the quarterfinal round of the Western Mass. Tournament and managed only two hits in their 5-0 defeat. It was a predominately senior linup which led the Lions to victory in the 1968 season. Ray Lavoie, Bill Williamson, Carl PE and Lindo Alves, who were named to the Valley Wheel All-Star Team and Ken Ericksberg, John Alves, and Manny Goncalves were the seniors who led the Lion attack. Track The Ludlow High School track team concluded the season with its third ea of the year, an impres- sive win over Commerce. The team, coached by Mr. Joseph Szlosek, concluded its third season of competi- tion and its first year in the Valley Wheel. Since the league is the strongest in Western Massachusetts, Ludlow’s record showed a slight decline from last year. The Lions beat Palmer for their first league victory and also won an independent meet over Southwick. Led by its four senior members, the squad succeeded in setting new school track records this year. Leading oint scorer was senior Ray Laurin with 106 points. ay participated in the javelin, discus, and one-hundred yard dash events. Other seniors on the squad were: high eas Bob Livermore; half miler, Don Savoia; Frank owak, popular javelin and shot-put man; and Bill Dziedzinski. In the Valley Wheel and Western Mass. meets, Ludlow scored ten and six points, respectively. The Western Mass. points were gained by Laurin, who placed fourth in the javelin, and by junior Alan Ericksberg, who placed third and fifth in the hurdles for a total of six points. The play, which included a 21 member cast, was set in seventeenth century Puritan America. It dealt with the Salem witch trials and man’s never-ending fight against the pressures of conformity. Seniors in the cast were: John White as John Proctor; Jay Bowman as Reverend Hale; Darlene Fernandes as Abigail Williams; Debbie Theriault as Mary War- ren; and Carlos Santos as Francis Nurse. Though “The Crucible” is seldom performed by high school groups, Ludlow’s Theatre Arts group, under the direction of Miss Mary Dubois, enacted the play in all its intensity. Throughout the play, the acting was su- perb. No one can deny that “The Crucible” was a great play; painstakingly directed, intensely enacted . . . and beautifully done. Mucha As four of the most memorable years of our lives are now behind us, I feel that we should recognize the dedicated educators that helped mold our lives. Our achievements can, in part, be attributed to the guidance given us by the faculty and administration of Ludlow High. To them I extend our thanks for their sincere interest in our education. To the members of the Class of 1968, I would like to express my hope and expectation that the spirit that kept us together in the past will be retained as we go our individual ways. Our class has made its mark through academic, athletic, and social achievements; these achievements shall never be forgotten. Class History In September of 1964, the Class of 1968 entered the hallowed halls of LHS as over-anxious and obscure freshmen. We began to develope as a class under the capable leadership of President Arthur M. Carvalho. To assist and advise our President, we elected Arelindo Alves Vice-President, Carl Ericksberg Secretary, and Ronald Cabey Treasurer. The social climax of our Freshman year came with two semi-formal dances entitled “Frosh Nite Out” and “A Minute to Midnight”. With one year of our high school career behind us, we ventured into the Sophomore hall. We renewed our faith in Arthur Carvalho by electing him for a second term of office. Other able officers elected were: Jay Bowman Vice-President, Agostino Calheno Secretary, and Jacqueline Andre Treasurer. Our class gathered forces to prepare our greatest function to date, the Sophomore Banquet, the “Rue de Printemps”. General chairmen who organized the event were Laurette Zolty and Richard McCarron. At the end of the year our class hastily organized the last social event of the year; we sponsored a semi-formal dance entitled “Pot Luck”. The success of this venture gave us the spirit of upperclassmen. As upperclassmen we became and took on all the responsibilities that come with the position. To lead our class in Junior activities we enlisted Carol Costa as President, Kenneth Ericksberg Vice-President, Anita Lake Secretary, and Jacqueline Andre Treasurer. The first task brought before us was the presentation of the Junior Dance. We entitled the dance the “Lion’s Den” and set it to an a-go-go theme. Juniors who headed committees were: Kathy Zimmer—decorations, Karen Hiersche—refreshments, Judith Henriques—tickets, and Jerry White—publicity and entertainment. The dance was a great success and helped secure funds for the annual Junior Promenade. Our class then began work on the prom which was held June 9, 1967 for the Class of 1967. Karen Hiersche was named general chairman of the high school’s only formal dance which had the theme “May It Last Forever”. Set to a Roman background, the prom was extrememly well- managed and proved to be the greatest to date. Assisting Miss Hiersche in the preparations were: Barbara Poremba, Decorations Chairman; Claudia Ewick, Chairman of Invitations and Favors; Maureen Brennan, Tickets; Judy Mosio, Refreshments; and Ronald Almeida, Entertainment. In September, 1967, we entered into our fourth and final year as members of LHS. The first task before us was the sponsoring of the Booster Day Activities, that resulted in success for the Lions. We were led by President John Mucha, Vice-President Agostino Calheno, Secretary Anita Lake, Treasurer Jacqueline Andre, and Representatives Diane Bojarski, Carol Costa, Carol Fernandes, Doug Jaciow, Jackie Maratea, Diane Minnie, Darlene Roberts, and Kathi Trusz. With the Senior Show behind us, the last days of our senior career passed quickly. Class Day soon arrived and with it the speeches of John Mucha, Class President; Francine Kulis, Salutatorian; and Karen Hiersche, Class Valedictorian. We left our mark in the form of a tree which was planted in the front of the school. Our last social function before graduation came that night. The class spirit was at its peak as we all enjoyed our banquet, which was held at Vincent’s Steak House. The completion of our high school years came on the night of June 12 when we ended our auspicious history as students of Ludlow High. 108 KATHY STANUCH HELEN ANDRE HELEN ANDRE DOLLY FERNANDES MAUREEN BRENNAN DOLLY FERNANDES JANET PEACEY CHRISTINE SWIENTON NORMA AMOS SUE SORCINELLI CAROL COSTA GAY BERG GAIL MERKEL CAROL COSTA KATHI TRUSZ FRIENDLY’S CABARET SOPHOMORE BANQUET Class Ballot Most Popular Best Looking Best Dressed Class Flirt Class Clown Class Actor Actress Class Chatterbox Teachers’ Pet Teachers’ Trial Class Athlete Class Politician Class Artist Most Talented in Music Most Likely to Succeed Mr. and Miss School Spirit Class Rendezvous Class Song Most Memorable Event 109 LINDO ALVES RAY LAVOIE WALLY STUPAK BILL DAVIS DICK MC CARRON JAY BOWMAN TOM MULLARKEY MICHAEL LEWISON ALBERT CRISOSTOMO LINDO ALVES ARTHUR CARVALHO JOHN WHITE JOHN MUCHA ARTHUR CARVALHO ALBERT CRISOSTOMO FRIENDLY’S BOTTLE OF WINE SENIOR SHOW Editor Christine Swienton and Yearbook Advisor Mr. William Lavin. The once trivial, carefree world Of simple tears and laughter, Of youth in its struggle for truth and identity, Draws itself back into the eternal past, Fading, dissolving, replacing itself with a new sense of being As we embark upon the piers of reality. Suddenly, this is life—the true hard core of existence In which we find ourselves alone on a strange and fitful sea, Raving with fear, repulsion and doubt. And yet, though the waves rush hard against us, They shall not fulfill their fatal purpose, For it has been provided that We, as exclusive members of a great universal union, Are joined inseparable to form an invincible field of humanity. 112 Robert F- Kennedy “. . . Something we were withholding left us weak Until we found out that it was ourselves We were withholding from our living And forthwith found salvation in surrender. Such as we were we gave ourselves outright (The deed of gift was many deeds of war) To the land, vaguely realizing westward, But still unstoried, artless, unenhanced, Such as she was, such as she would become.” Robert Frost The Gift Outright The deed of gift was many gifts of life. Robert Kennedy’s gift to this country was indeed a gift outright. He and his brothers, and the whole Kennedy family meant something special to this nation—just as the nation meant something special to them. With this memoriam, the Class of 1968 wishes to acknowledge that great intangible something. bbs Theatre Arts Student Patrol French Club 114 ek K Red Cross Spanish Club Maroon Key Student Council Pro Merito Future Nurses of America Hi-News Majorettes Color Guard Ski Club Nn vo = = iss} [= = — i 1 Band Mixed Chorus Varsity Cheerleaders J.
