One hundred years ago when Emily Dickinson wrote, “The Heart is the Capital of the Mind”, I doubt that she could have foreseen the tremendous technological advances of the twentieth century. It is a sad commentary on our times that, not only does it seem that the Mind has taken over, but we are now reaching the point of letting machines—mechanical minds—control too many of our plans and decisions, too much of our destinies. Nourish the Heart, as well as the Mind! I wish each of you every success in the future! Sincerely, Hugh O. Macfarlane Superintendent of Schools

S.—or whom she taught—be it grade one or grade twelve—through her individual consideration, sincere friendliness, and deep understanding, Miss Murtagh in- stilled herself not only in the minds of her comtemporaries and students but in their hearts as well. Teaching has “kept me young,” she says. Surely this is an under- statement, for the great energy of this devoted woman has been je
