Lavin. June Newman The Heart is the Capital of the Mind— The Mind is a single State The Heart and the Mind together make A single continent— One—is the Population— Numerous enough— This ecstatic Nation Seek—it is Yourself. —Emily Dickinson The Nation of Emily Dickinson’s poem is the individual; yet the world is made up of many nations, and the group is made of many individuals. Our class has shown through four years of high school together an “individualized unity”: The individual is im- portant to the group just as the group is important in itself. Thus, the spirit of the Class of 1967 is basically the unity of individuals. nn “This is how I feel: The honor given me by the class is the greatest thing that has ever happened, and it will be a long time before I'll be so pleased or gratified.” Rather, Mr. Linehan, the honor is ours. And this book is ours, dedicated to you—to your awareness of the joys, problems, thoughts, and dreams of us, your students; we would someday like to consider ourselves your friends. At Holy Cross, now his Alma Mater, Mr. Linehan majored in En- glish, his best subject. He was as active then—participating in de- bates, going to plays, writing for newspapers, and reading for en- joyment—as he is now—advising the Hi-News and Junior Class, presiding over the Ludlow Teachers’ Association, and teaching at L. H. S. But of all these activities, teaching means the most. Whether in the classroom, after school, or at any hour at home, he is eager to help any student. “A beautiful relationship” can exist when per- sonal contact with his students does not sacrifice his principles of teaching. You, as a student, have noticed him chaperoning at school func- tions, avidly attending plays and musical comedies, practicing his hobby of photography, or: rushing down the halls, tie flying, papers crinklng neatly in an uplifted hand, and to You a radi- ant hello. Pees ee Bape oe oH Md tits My rg {i cacnenemmaieas kane : PRINCIPAU’S MESSAGE TO; THE GEASS: OF: i267 The completion of the 1967 Yearbook has added another chapter to the long and distinguished history of Ludlow High School. To each member of the class it will serve as a permanent memorial to the many activities and events associated with your high school days. As the years go by, the Yearbook will provide you with a storehouse of pleasant memories as you recall with fond remembrance your fel- low classmates, athletic events, social affairs and all the myriad activities that were such an important part of your life during your years at Ludlow High School. To all the members of the Class of 1967 I wish to extend my con- gratulations on the successful completion of your high school careers and for your part in making this class a memorable one. Your scho- lastic and extracurricular achievements will long be a source of pride to all of us. I hope that your years at Ludlow High School will always be a vivid part of your school memories. To each of you I extend my sincere best wishes for success and hap- piness in the years ahead. I know you will continue to exhibit the same qualities of good citizenship, determination and application in your chosen field of endeavor that you so ably demonstrated while students at Ludlow High School. John J. Hurley, Principal The Class of 1967 has been part of a proud chapter in the life of Ludlow High School. During your stay here you have helped in many ways to have the school continue on as the “School of Champions.” The memory of your fine record here, both scholasti- cally and athletically, will help carry you over all obstacles that may be in life’s path. You have carved an outstanding record at our high school. We are proud of you. Grattan H. Rooney One hundred years ago when Emily Dickinson wrote, “The Heart is the Capital of the Mind”, I doubt that she could have foreseen the tremendous technological advances of the twentieth century. It is a sad commentary on our times that, not only does it seem that the Mind has taken over, but we are now reaching the point of letting machines—mechanical minds—control too many of our plans and decisions, too much of our destinies. Perhaps our great scientific de- velopment, together with our burgeoning population and unprece- dented prosperity, make no other course possible. Perhaps in- creasingly computerized lives will be worth it, in the name of progress. Yet, | would wish for you, the Class of 1967, the ability to remember the dignity and worth of the individual. May you realize that the good done by each man for his neighbor can be as effective as gov- ernment programs for the unfortunate masses. May you keep the human touch from being irretrievably lost. Nourish the Heart, as well as the Mind! I wish each of you every success in the future! Sincerely, Hugh O. Macfarlane Superintendent of Schools SCHOOL COMMITTEE Chairman Michael Pagos, Albert H. Fuller, Mary S. Vaz, Alfred A. LaRiviere, Hugh O. Macfarlane, Francis L. Chenaille 11 June, 1967, marks the close of the forty-fourth year of Miss Mar- garet Murtagh’s service to education and the end of a distin- guished teaching career. Two years at Westfield Normal School, the acquisition of a degree from Springfield College, and additional study at various schools in the surrounding area prepared Miss Murtagh for her chosen vocation. Upon the enthusiastic recommendation of one of her in- structors, she came to Ludlow, her first assignment being the little schoolhouse on Lyons Street. From that day on, no matter where she taught—be it the little schoolhouse, the Cole Building, the old high school, or our own new L. H. S.—or whom she taught—be it grade one or grade twelve—through her individual consideration, sincere friendliness, and deep understanding, Miss Murtagh in- stilled herself not only in the minds of her comtemporaries and students but in their hearts as well. Teaching has “kept me young,” she says. Surely this is an under- statement, for the great energy of this devoted woman has been je and still is indefatigable. Innumerable activities played a large role in her life before our new high school was built, and when it was at last completed, she faithfully continued with her busy schedule: handling seniors’ orders for caps and gowns; helping to supervise the Senior Assembly, Booster Day, and the Senior Show publicity committee; serving as secretary and treasurer of the Ludlow Teachers’ Association; and gladly giving of her time as a Springfield playground supervisor. Now any spare moments are spent reading, listening to good music, watching television specials, or simply enjoying an evening with friends. Thus Miss Murtagh is able to say in all honesty, “I have been the happiest person in Ludlow.” Miss Murtagh has long devoted herself to Ludlow High School. Her many contributions can never be amply recognized, but the Class of 1967, in appreciation of her dedicated service, wishes to extend its thanks in this farewell tribute to Miss Margaret Murtagh. 3 Miss Florence Saulnier—Chairman of English Department ENGLISH Miss Mary Dubois 14 Mr. Jerome Linehan Mr. William Rooney Miss Joan Giorgi Mr. James Cavallo Mrs. Patricia Ashe Mrs. Bonita Geiger 15 Mr. William Lavin om tr ‘i Mr. Marc Katsoulis—Chairman of History Department HISTORY Miss Margaret Murtagh eae Liha Saintes oh Mr. Lawrence Holdsworth Mr. Robert Bousquet Mr. Leonard Charest Mr. William Mullins Miss Justine Kelly Mr. Brian Connery 17 Mr. Richard Thompson MATH Mr. Daniel Lynes Miss Noreen Boucher Mr. Raymond Yando 18 Mr. Peter Boita—Chairman of Mathematics Department PUES: Mr. John Carlin 19 Mr. Lewis Clish SCIENCE Dr. Harry Vartanian Miss Helen Fleming Mr. Richard Kolodziey 20 Mr. David Dziura Mr. Francis Duclos—Chairman of Science Department Mr. Charles Patullo of Miss Joan Rusiecki Mrs. Mary Cormier—Chairman of Business Department BUSINESS L Mrs. Lillian Klempner 99 Mrs. Charlotte Focosi Mr. Emilio Bollea cd i Ee) Polys la ric Miss Pat Mrs. June Newman 23 lomene Proctor—Chairman of Language Department Phi Mrs ga + F = Fons 3 wera ae me TR ie core SN ACERS teem Yolande Randall Mrs. Mrs. Antoinette Burgess ae Wid Aa Di te vials Miss Susan Watkins Mrs. Mary Piffarerio Mr. Bernard Burns Mr. John Greenland 25 Mr. Robert Koshinsky Mr. Joseph Daniele HOME ECONOMICS Veeney ets hate =e et 2 + $ + $ + Hy ii efi ue rong? illa Tassinari TISCL Mrs. P Mrs. Miriam Patullo—Chairman of Home Economics Department 26 Mr. Joseph Szlosek Miss Helen Kudlic 27 Mr. Arthur Nelson—Chairman of Guidance Department GUIDANCE esa 7: Sag ahem Mk ok x ao ‘ weet ST ee . 2 Miss Olive Brooks Mr. Louis Casagrande 28 ER SS SOR A A a ae Mrs. Penny Abrahamson Miss Mary Scyzial Miss Rachel Pearson 99 Mrs. Alyce-Mae Szlosek Mr. Robert Fishman Mr. Gregory Wrinn—Chairman of Music Department 3Q Mr. Avelino Dias Mr. James Carvalho 31 BOOSTER DAY DANCE Helen Andre aye eee eee oer se Come, Cheer Up, My Lads, ’tis to Glory We Steer. We will no longer meet as a class, but in our hearts and minds we will remember the precious moments and the outstanding victories that we acquired in our high school careers. We began as freshmen by electing Mitchell Ziencina, president; Beatrice Berry, vice president; Karen Alves, secretary; and Cynthia Machado, treasurer. Elected to assist these officers were Daniel Arcobello, Timothy Clifford, Elizabeth Ferreira, Gilbert Gonsalves, Roger Labreque, Linda Nowak, Timothy Rooney, Jane Teluk and Joseph Zina. For our first venture into the social world we sponsored the delightful “Snow Ball”. To complete our year as freshmen, we held the “Hillbilly Hop”, an informal dance. Then, we, as sophomores continued into the second year of our high school career. Elected to lead us were James Wallace, president; Elizabeth Ferreira, vice president; Karen Alves, secretary; and Jane Teluk, treasurer. To aid the officers Kathleen Abair, Timothy Clifford, Robert Desmarais, Gilbert Gonsalves, Edwin Kapinos, Linda Nowak, Timothy Rooney, Carol Shotts, and Joseph Zina were elected. “Winter Carnival”, a semi-formal dance, opened the sophomore events followed by “Twilight Bouquet”, our sophomore banquet. Also that year, Betsy Gilrein was chosen Miss Victory 1964. To mark our third year as high school students we elected Timothy Rooney to lead us. Robert Migacy was chosen vice president, with Karen Alves, secretary, and Timothy Clifford, treasurer. Their assistants were Daniel Arcobello, Patricia Cardinale, Gilbert Gonsalves, Edwin Kapinos, Mary Ann Masley, Victor Petrolati, Carolyn Scyocurka, and Joseph Zina. Our first dance open to the study body was entitled “Silver Stardust”. At the Hi-Y Show, Beatrice Berry was selected Miss Victory 1965. To complete the year and to pay tribute to the departing seniors we held “In an Old Dutch Garden by an Old Dutch Mill”-—the Junior Promenade. As we entered the most important year of our high school career, Gary Hen- richon was elected to head the Senior class. Other officers were Timothy Clifford, vice president; Karen Alves, secretary; and Verna Marlowe, treasurer. Homeroom representatives were Kathleen Abair, Robert Desmarais, Gilbert Gonsalves, Edwin Kapinos, Lawrence Marques, Victor Petrolati, Edward Santini, and Joseph Zina. The annual Booster Day Dance was held in the fall of the year, and with the Staging of the very successful and enjoyable “Club °67”, the Senior Show, our senior year rapidly came to an end. Maureen Golden, chosen Miss Victory 1966, marked the third girl from the Class of ’67 to hold that title. The ever enduring memories of Class Day and the Class Banquet are with us now. Each of us has made plans for the future, but the friendships we have ac- quired in high school remain forever. Let us hope that the successes we enjoyed at LHS will continue for all classes. 110 Class Banquet And we meet, with champagne and a chicken at last. Lady M. W. No one wanted to believe it, but Ludlow High had finally lost a Western Mass. tourney final by the unusual score of 0-0. Yes, it was a tie, but the game was decided on corner kicks, and we were on the short side 5-3. The team’s final record was 17-1-1; the only loss being the one to Technical High School of Springfield in the tourney final. Rookie coach Ray Yando had a tough job at the beginning of the season but shaped his Lions from the young team they were to the Pioneer Valley League Champs they became. This year marked the last year the P. V. L. would remain together as probably the strongest league in Massachusetts. And with the league championship this year, Ludlow became the only team ever to win the P. V. L. title. Coach Yando felt that the two seniors, co-captain Gilbert Gonsalves and Danny Arcobello, were a very big help to the team as well as himself. Gil was the leading scorer in the league before being injured. Danny had an intense desire to improve; this he did. Mr. Yando feels that “tradition and pride in themselves and their school were always a part of all these boys,” and the word “lose” was not a part of their vocabulary. 137 FOOTBALL TEAM FOOTBALL With the close of the 1966 season, the Ludlow High School var- sity football team had increased its yearly schedule to nine games (Commerce being a new rival), had won the Suburban League championship, and tied a record for the most games won in an individual season. What will not be entered on the records are the team’s distinc- tions—what made it different from any other winning team. Coach Patullo, who had an overall picture the entire season, can best make these distinctions: “The only handicap was a lack of more seniors because they were the backbone of the team. In truth, however, injuries caused us some problems. Our chief asset was the team unity and spirit “Individually, Jim Wallace is the most complete football player I've ever coached, Tim Rooney—the most courageous, Kevin Thompson—hardest runner, Dike Mitchell—the hard-nosed foot- ball type. These four played prominent roles in our success. Our right side, Big Frank Koczacka, was the most improved player in my opinion. Dave Mitchell and Herm Hageman opened the Holes! Paul Dorval’s fine running and Tom Haluch’s all around versatility were enough to give us good balance. B.T. Bob Thomp- son—tough on defense, and Chuck Picard with Glen Fraher pro- vided a strong pivot position. Both Howie Katz and Jim Hast- ings are typical of this year’s senior spirit. Playing for their first time, both were intensive in their desire to help in any way pos- sible.” “In other words, our assets were the kids from Ludlow who came to play!!”” 138 Record Classical Minnechaug East Longmeadow Longmeadow South Hadley Holyoke Catholic Commerce Enfield Palmer Ludlow Visitor 20 a1 8 18 24 12 20 14 12 Y OOK AA DA A _ BASKETBALL TEAM BASKETBALL With four of the five starters from last year’s team lost through graduation, our basketball team was picked for third place in the Valley Wheel and seemed headed for a mediocre season. Under first year Coach Brian Connery the team surpassed all expecta- tions by winning the Valley Wheel title and capping the season with the Small Schools Tournament championship. The season began with an overtime victory over Chicopee Comp, but inexperience was very evident in the first few games. Pre- season favorite Agawam gave the Lions their first setback but from then on the team gained momentum and transformed itself to championship caliber. The Wheel title was decided in a series of three home games with the league’s top contenders. Ludlow was at its best and completely demoralized each team, winning each game by a wide margin and avenging its only defeat by trouncing Agawam. Ludlow showed its superiority to larger schools in the area by beating Springfield clubs and totally dominating the Small School Tournament. The 18-3 record compiled by this year’s club was due greatly to the seniors, Tim Rooney, Jack Bernardo, Paul Dorval, Ed Pry- stupa, Joe Mastalerz and Jamie Smolen and a fine corps of ju- niors but there is no question that it was a superb coaching job by Mr. Connery which brought the team to victory after victory, Coach Connery showed himself one of the best coaches in the area in his first year at the helm. This year’s team exemplified team spirit and pride and showed everyone once and for all that Ludlow is the “Home of Champ- ions.” BASEBALL TEAM BASEBALL Our baseball team continued in the steps of the other sports this year at LHS and took the third straight Valley Wheel crown under the coaching of Bill Mullins. The lions went through the Wheel undefeated and were 18-2 overall. They were invited to the Western Mass. Tourney for the 3rd consecutive year and were defeated by a tough Westfield team 2-1. Seniors played an important part on this winning Lud- low team. Captain Tim Rooney had a good year de- fensively and his speed on the basepaths were always a threat to rival teams. Jim Wallace caught the first part of the season and played third and the outfield, contributing some timely hits. Glenn Fraher took on the duties behind the plate midway through the sea- son and his bat was very helpful. The “ace” on the LHS pitching staff was Jack Bernardo. He pitched the lions toughest games and in two years of varsity ball posted an 19-2 record. Tom Haluch was another pitcher who starred in relief and posted a 4-0 record. Ed Pry- stupa camped in centerfield and this fleet fielder pulled out more than one game with his long blasts. Holding down an outfield post for most of the season, Jerry Konieczny was always there when needed. Doug Davis rounds out the seniors and would pitch in whenever needed. This was an extremely well balance Ludlow team and the spirit they had carried them to a very good year. They played for the sake of the team and school. 40 Record Ludlow Agawam 13 Longmeadow Trade Enfield Easthampton Cathedral Palmer Classical Tech Ware Classical Minnechaug Agawam East Longmeadow Longmeadow South Hadley Enfield Monson Easthampton — — Ww CoN = BONO US NOC sOon bh NOE Oy) Tourney Westfield l Visitor FATS FO FOCUS ORONO 100 Gon OY OO et Goes HOCKEY TEAM HOCKEY The 1966-67 season was the first year that our hockey team was in a formal league—the Western Mass. School- boy Hockey League. The previous year, the Lions played an informal, independent schedule and did so well that it was decided, by the league officials, that Ludlow should be allowed to participate in the Wright Division. So, with a strong returning nucleus, coaches Richard Malek and Tony Costa began a rewarding and impres- sive season. The schedule consisted of fifteen regular games against opponents such as Springfield Trade, Classical, Chicopee Comp., Longmeadow, and East Longmeadow. Led by captain Dan Arcobello and Al- ternate captains Vic Petrolati, Walt Stupak, and Bob Livermore, the Lions remained undefeated after six games; their streak marred only by a 2-2 tie with East Longmeadow. The seventh game of the season was un- lucky as the Lions lost to league champion Classical, 3-1. Rebounding back, the Ludlow boys won five straight until again losing to Classical by a score of 1-0. That game was probably the most thrilling game played all season at the Coliseum, as it determined the winner of the Wright Division. With the divisional championship out of reach, the Lions then aimed at a playoff berth in the Western Mass. Tourney. A tie with Trade and a blistering victory over Chicopee Comp. assured that playoff spot, and the Ludlowites prepared to enter the Tourney. In the quarter finals of the Tourney, Ludlow faced a 141 top-notch Tech team before an enormous crowd. With less than two minutes gone by in the first period, Dan Arcobello flipped the puck past the Tech goalie to give the Lions the lead. In the second period, freshman Art Bailey scored to build Ludlow’s lead to 2-0. But then the local boys seemed to tire, and two Tech goals tied the game. With less than one minute remaining in the overtime period, a Tech player slid the puck past Lud- low goalie John Bissaillon to end Ludlow’s hopes. Tech went on to win the Tounrey. Although the team did not win the championship, they did wind up in second place in their division, a very good accomplishment for any first year team. Their final record was 11 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. Also, two members of the team won individual honors—Senior Dan Arcobello won the Wright Division scoring crown with a total of 18 goals and 11 assists, and was named to the first team of the Wright Division All-Stars. This year, there were only four Seniors on the squad. Vic Petrolati, an alternate captain was a hard-shooting right winger, known to his team mates as “Boom- Boom.” Walt Sajdak, a versatile lineman filled in at a moment’s notice, and was called on frequently to re- place members of the first and second lines. Ron Cel- lillie, a hard-checking defenseman could also play in the line. Dan Arcobello, the team captain, was the fourth Senior, and was the center on the first line. te — ET NE CO eC a hit an DE Bh ASTIN WY ATTAIN IUEROLN UC USCET TUT UCAS SENIOR DIRECTORY KATHLEEN ABAIR dance committees 1, 2, 3, 4;
