Our loss of Mr. Russell in the year 1965 will have a marked effect on our lives, and we will always feel his absence very deeply. He was an outstanding principal and leader, an able teacher, and most im- portant of all a good friend to every student at Ludlow High School. Mr. Russell was truly a dedicated and conscientious man, both at work and at leisure. His support of our social and athletic functions could always be ex- pected and was always appreciated. Ad- mired and respected by all, he was our security and guidance during our years of uncertainty. He knew our needs and problems, and was always willing to help when we needed him. Therefore, we, the class of 1966, do dedi- cate the 1966 edition of the Ludlow Lion to the late Mr. George E. Russell. Fuller To the Class of ’66 A Viking warrior spent his entire life doing deeds that would help him remain immortal in the minds of his country- men. | like this idea of immortality. It is my fondest wish that the Class of 66 has done enough to remain immortal in the mind of L.H.S. We are, each of us, in the April of our years. We have be- gun to sprout blossoms which show promise of an abundant harvest. We have begun to paint our life’s mural. The town, the faculty and administration of L.H.S., and our parents have all done their part and we must now start to build on the foundation which they have built for us. We have all set our own goals and now with God’s help we may start to realize them. | would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Class of ’66 for electing me President, to Mr. William Mullins for his direction and guidance, and to Mr. William Rooney for all the inspiring and profound knowledge he has given me. CLASS HISTORY As the conclusion of our stay at Ludlow High School quickly descends upon us, we, the class of 1966, hope that our stay has brought a small quantity of pleasure and happiness to the hearts of the folk of this small town. We hope that, by our deeds, we have that much more made Ludlow a fine and respectful place in which to live. We, as freshmen in our newly-constructed school, be- gan our first stride toward our goal. We insured this by electing into office president James Pagos, Vice- President Leon Scruton, Secretary Nancy Libiszewski, and Treasurer Rose Soares. To ease the burden of these officers we elected James Almeida, Charles Cha- conas, Paula Fidalgo, Katheline Hiersche, Susan Marti- nelli, Susan Russell, Marsha Silva, and Nikki Vogt as Student Council members. To raise funds for our class, we sponsored our first affair, ‘‘Winter Fantasy’’, the Freshman Dance. Our freshman football team boasted a successful season of complete victories. As sophomores we felt more at ease and more sure of reaching our destined goal. We held elections and voted into office President Raymond Warren, Vice- President Lynn Freiberg, Secretary Nancy Libiszewski, and Treasurer Paula Fidalgo. To aid them were elect- ed George Berry, Cynthia Cardinale, Barbara Giza, lrene Midura, Susan Russell, Marcia Sorcinelli, and Janet Vigneault. This year our class put on a costume dance, ‘‘Moonlight Masquerade”’. As we began our third stride in our Junior year, we elected four female leaders: President Mary Lou Walls, Vice-President Marsha Silva, Secretary Nancy Libiszewski, and Treasurer Rose Soares. Their aides were James Bernard, Cynthia Cardinale, Barbara Giza, Jeannie Kowalski, Susan McChesney, James Pagos, Marcia Sorcinelli, and Raymond Warren. We began the year by putting on our very successful ‘Mr. Lucky,’’ and ended it with our tribute to the departing Seniors — the Junior Promenade, ‘‘Whisper- ing Willows.” This was an especially successful year in that our 132 football and baseball teams were league champs, our soccer team was State Champ, and our basketball team was Western-Mass. Champ. The senior year being the most important of our high school years, and seeing the end of our stride in the near future, we carefully elected President Robert Fuller, Vice-President Leon Scruton, Secretary Nancy Libiszewski, and Treasurer Diane Bellisario. Their helpful assistants were Denis Bourcier, Cynthia Cardinale, Barbara Giza, Jeannie Kowalski, James Pagos, Rose Soares, and Raymond Warren. At the beginning of our senior year we held the traditional ‘Booster Day Dance”’ and Pep Rally. In February of that same year we held our successful and entertain- ing ‘‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’”’, the annual Senior Show. One first which we saw make history in our years at Ludlow High was the School Supply Store, sponsored by the Student Council. Several Seniors had won awards and contests in their senior year. They included: Priscilla Piligian won the essay contest entitled ‘‘What Democracy Means to Me’’. Lenore Paul was named ‘‘Homemaker of Tomorrow. ”’ Mary Lou Walls won the ‘‘Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award”’. John Chenaille won a National Merit Scholarship. Karen Brockney and Susan Russell both won Bar Schol- arships. Susan McChesney was the winner of the Constitution Essay Contest in Ludlow and took part in the dis- trict contest. Cheryl Shepard, Susan McChesney, and Patricia Fair- banks made the Massachusetts All-State District Chorus. Marlene Silva won the Western Mass. Small Schools Tournament essay contest entitled, ‘‘After Victory — What?” Dominic Rodrigues won the tournament Poster Con- test. Seniors who represented Ludlow High at various conferences were: John Chenaille attended Good Government Day at Boston State House. FOOTBALL The 1966 football team, finishing the season with a 4-3-1 overall record, was often hampered by injuries and lack of experience in some places. Seniors on Coach Charles Patullo’s squad included Howard Fray- er, Jack Edgar, James Bunard, Peter Rakouskas, Tom Curto, Fred Reed, Keith Person, Larry Cone, and John Davis. Playing 21 games, the Mass. State playoffs in- cluded, the team was unbeaten and untied. Through the adroitness and agility of Bob Duarte (29 goals 17 assists), Lido Alves (16 g, 19 as), Bob McCarron (16 g, 17 as), and Gordon Allen (6 g, 8 as), the soc- cer team maintained a constant offence and gave our goalie, Bob Augusto, much time for contemplation. Ludlow had only 8 goals scored against them during the entire season while the ‘toemen’ neatly placed 87 in the nets of the opposition. Championships flowed to Ludlow. The team won the Pioneer Valley League Championship going on to win the Western Mass. Championship for the eighth consecutive year. They maintained their unbeaten and untied record by the defeating New Bedford 3-1 to gain the Mass. State Championship for the third consecutive year. Ludlow was well represented in the All Western Mass. Soccer Team. Four boys; Bob Augusto, Gordon Allen, Bob Duarte, Bob McCarron, all seniors were in the lineup. The All League Team saw five Ludlow players in the lineup, all are seniors: G. Allen, B. Augusto, B. Duarte, B. McCarron, and A. Soucy. The awards still continued to be presented. Channel 22 (WWLP) was presenting an award for ‘Athlete of the Week’. It was offered three times, and thrice Ludlow brought the trophy home. The first recipient was the high scorer for the team, Bob Duarte; the second was the agile-footed Bob McCarron; and third was the 6’ 1” goalie, Bob Augusto. Upon asking the team who they felt was most re- sponsible for their success, they pointed to Coach Kurty. When the Coach was questioned he praised the work of the boys and their manager, John Stru- ziak. It seems as though they all worked as a unit and, therefore, deserve the praise as a unit. 141 HOCKEY The hockey team, a newly formed sport with an amaz- ing overall record of 12-2-1 for its first season, proved to be a sport that will continue at Ludlow High for many years to come. Coach Richard Malek was gifted with seniors John Casagrande, Gordon Allen, Charles Chaconas, Warren Retzloff, David Pennachoine, and Robert McCarron. Through the point- getting ability of the right guards, James Pagos (se- nior) and Tim Rooney, and the left forward, Bob Duarte (senior), in addition to the great board con- trol by Bob Augusto (senior), Jack Edgar (senior), and a novice, Daniel Sepiol (senior), Ludlow ended the season in second place. The boys performed ds well as expected in the highly competitive Valley Wheel League. The fellows felt glory in the point grappling triumph over first place Agawam (74-73). Ludlow was invited back to the Western Massachusetts Tournament as defending champions, but unfortu- nately was defeated by St. Michaels (69-54). Mr. John Kurty, who coached the Ludlow Basketball team for eleven years, retired this year to the dismay of the high scho ol. Although he will be available for some assistance, he will preoccupy himself mostly with the soccer team. BASEBALL Coach Mullins came back this year with a fine team, a league championship, and an entry in the Western Massachusetts Tournament. Senior stars included pitchers Gordon Allen and Ralph Sambor and team- mates Bob Duarte, Charles Chaconas, Larry Cone, and Bob McCarron. Easthampton Agawam Longmeadow S.
