HUBBARD HERORIA! ‘Leven LUDLOW. MASSACHE | IS TS aiges CONTENTS istration in Adm Act 1vities ivities Senior Act Sports Underclassmen BUT ’'VE GOT PROMISES TO KEEP AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP ROBERT FROST As the graduating class of 1965 leaves the sacred halls of Ludlow High it takes time to remember, with sincere gratitude and thanks, the undying spirit and faithfulness of the one person we consider “our teacher” Miss Mary Dubois. In the three years that Miss Mary Dubois has been here at Ludlow High she has helped and encouraged us beyond all measures. For this we are grateful and in our hearts she will always be remembered not only as a teacher, but as a friend. “But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go be- fore I sleep.” These are the immortal words of the great New England poet Rob- ert Frost. They apply to anyone looking into the future; a future we all must face, for time goes on. Facing the light of the future, we pause — somewhat afraid, yet eager — to look into the shadows of the past. Now, we have tried to capture all the moments and events the past four years hold for us. With the hope of preserving forever these cherished memories, we the editors and staffs proudly offer our past to the future, in the 1965 edition of the... LUDLOW LION! a Be pero se cbijibinilitsiicclaat IN TRIBUTE For more than ten years, Ludlow High School has been both proud and privi- leged to have as its principal a man of great stamina and ability. Through these years this man has been both a leader and a friend, not only to the members of the class of ’65 but to every student who has entered the doors of Ludlow High. His desire to help whenever he could and to lead whenever he had to, will be re- membered throughout the coming years with great appreciation and gratitude. Therefore, we, the class of 1965 do present our edition of the Ludlow Lion in tribute to our principal, Mr. George E. Russell 5 sonmtin = oor S ¥ —— aie i oe e 2 ott sy « To the Class of 1965: Nineteen-sixty-five, the year of your high school graduation, will always be re- membered with pride and satisfaction by each of you. It will recall happy memo- ries of associations with teachers and fellow students. As you look to the future and anticipate the many years of adult life before you, you cannot help but wonder about the future and your ability to cope with it. Let me reassure you, you can face it unafraid, for you have performed in an ex- emplary manner both scholastically and in sportsmanship. Your performance in extracurricular activities reveals spirit and a high sense of cooperation. I wish each of you continued success. My best wishes go with you as you join the ranks of responsible citizens. Kenneth A. Lant Superintendent of Schools SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr. Edwin Allen Mr. Eugene Soja Mr. James Teixeira Dr. Reuben Katz Mr. Albert Fuller PRINCIPALS MESSAGE The Class of 1965 has during the 1964-65 school year provided the inspiration and leadership for many notable achievements in the history of Ludlow High School and my appreciation is extended to its members for the honor and prestige which they have brought to the school. The 1965 Yearbook records for all times the events which have been a part of this success and the individuals who have made these contributions. ’'m proud to recognize in my message to the class your Editor Betty Avezzie and her staff for the work which they have accom- plished in this yearbook. I appeal to all members of the Class of 1965 so that they may contribute as much in the years ahead as they have in the years past and bring added glory to themselves and to Ludlow High School. ROBERT TROMBLY “Bob” 66 i | on SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As the essence of the New England year quickly pass and are soon forgotten, so have many graduating classes before us passed. But we hope that our class, the Class of Nineteen-hundred and Sixty-five, will remain a moment longer in the hearts of the folk in our New England town. The deeds we have done and the victories we have won in the past four years at Ludlow High School will be re- told and remembered in the future. Four years ago we, as eager Freshmen, began the first mile of our high school journey. To insure success we elected Governor Elizabeth Avezzie; Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Ziemian; Secretary of the Commonwealth Linda Saloio; and Minister of Finance Harry McDonough. Councilmen were: Dolores Archible, Car- olyn Methe, Debbie Condon, Cindy Martin, Marion Saletnik, Suzanne Zagranski, Barbara Hanson, Rodney Labreque. Our first venture through “Candyland” proved an enjoyable evening for the class. A few months later we steered our course on a beautiful “Carribean Cruise.” The Class continued on the second mile in the scenery of a modern high school. Again we placed confidence in Governor Elizabeth Avezzie. Her aides were: Lieu- tenant Governor Rebecca Bradford; Secretary of the Commonwealth Linda Salio; Minister of the Finance Harry McDonough; and Councilmen: Dolores Archible, Henry Crisostomo, Cindy Martin, Marion Saletnik, Nancy Hageman. Risking a detour, we had a “Blast” followed by the annual Sophomore Banquet. Along the straightways again, the class emerged more closely united, having passed the half-way mark of their journey. On the third mile we elected James Rooney as Governor; Elizabeth Avezzie, Lieutenant Governor; Linda Saloio, Secretary of the Commonwealth; Harry Mc- Donough, Minister of Finance; and Councilmen: Dolores Archible, Henry Crisos- tomo, Chris Konieczny, Lorraine Silva, Linda Kelly. As we approached the ‘“‘Prelude to Winter” the assassination of our beloved Presi- dent John F. Kennedy left a most-tragic milestone upon our history. Momentarily saddened we resumed with the plans for the Junior Promenade, entitled ‘‘Misty Isle.” Having reached the final mile of our journey we re-elected Governor James Roo- ney. His aides were: Lieutenant Governor Micheal Thompson; Secretary of the Commonwealth Linda Saloio; Minister of the Finance Harry McDonough; and Councilmen Dolores Archible, Henry Crisostomo, Rodney LaBrecque, Carolyn Methe, Lorainne Silva, and James Thompson. Although a final dance for our class, “The Booster Day Dance” was the first event of the 1965 social calendar. Immediately preceding our dance, “Seniors on Stage,” a credited success, con- veyed the theme of popular American entertainment to the public. As we near the end of our high school journey, by participating in the Junior Promenade, Class Day, and the Class Banquet, the class will always remember the famous words of Robert Frost: “But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep” So as Robert Frost, has said, we too the class of Nineteen-hundred and Sixty-five still has miles to go to continue the staunch New England traditions of steadfast prosperity. 70 POEM The end of a road we are quickly reaching, All members are eager for new paths of life, Each with a view of his own from his teachings Sets out for new goals through danger and strife. We look back into sunset, a queenly oak stands Caressing memoirs with tidings so grand. The foliage to its peak was nearing As each leaf into life’s sea was peering. One by one they abandoned the others, Crossing paths — Bidding farewell to brothers. They settled on the cool, firm ground — All vibrant colors: Crimson, gold, and brown. Glancing back to their vein of life, Few clung fast to face winter’s strife. Winter’s come, and they’ll remember; Their common vein assembled one September. Blanketed by the winter of the deep, His personal fortune each must seek, But promises to keep, And miles to go before they sleep, And miles to go before they sleep. A pattern true has come alive As leaves fall from the Class of ’65 Soon in their destined ways departing From the vital vein are darting. The gentle wind begins to blow Ambitious gusts to stir them on — To school To work To service each must leap, But we have promises to keep, And miles to go before we sleep, And miles to go before we sleep. Some choose marriage and new careers, Some will always linger near. Encompassing the world, her roots deep-set; The leaves of toil can never forget. The common vein of 65 Each leaf must help to keep alive. Cherished brothers Moments Ties Within each leaf a memory lies. The spring of life each leaf must seek And the green of life each leaf shall reap. But many promises to keep, And miles to go before we sleep, And miles to go before we sleep. Vo iit vede BH CIY The first Winter Olympics held in the 21st century began with the spectacular lighting of the traditional torch by DAVE HERRICK and a prayer by Reverend TOM SOCHA. Events began with the international Polar Bear competitions under the skillful direction of coach BRUCE THOMPSON. Taking the gold medal in the pairs figure skating competition were Ludlow’s own brother-sister team MAUREEN and GEORGE “Silver Skates” AROOTH (A couple of real movers.) Next on the agenda are the indoor water events where we see STEVE “the fish” MELNYCK taking first place for the high-diving competition. Trying to avoid “the fish” as he gracefully bellyflops into the ole H2o are butterfly stroke champs, BOB KAZAN and PHIL “Flipper” TIERNY. Providing liquid refresh- ment for the spectators are “those little ole winemakers” TOM FIDALGO, TONY AGUIAR, and DAN PALHEIREDO. Next, on the political scene, in the 2,005 elections, we find Senator DON BARBER and his running mate RAY MILLER pitted against the famous lady representa- tive, SHERRELL ANDRUSKIEWICZ. If you remember, the lady senator was the first person to singlehandedly hold a year-long filibuster on the floor of the Senate. The Democratic party is truly represented in its liberalism by quiet, reserved HANK CRISOSTOMO who threw his hat into the political ring with his campaign slogan “‘What’s good for the guys is good for the world!!’’ His hard workers include that swift typing staff of CHERYL GOVE, EILEEN DOMAIGNE, ES- TELLE STADNICKI, and KARENSUE CHESTNUT. On the state-wide election scene we see Governor ROY L’HEUREUX still handing down responsibilities to Speaker of the House, ‘“The Plastic Duke” JASON THOMPSON. On the encourage- ment of officer CALVIN TATRO, representative BOB MESSINGER will present his Prohibition Bill before the state legislation. We are sure this will be passed by the “Plastic Duke” and his henchmen DICK GAZDA, DICK SILVA, BILL BERSELLI and KEN THOMAS. In local elections the new school committee consists of chairman AL BERRY, and members LARRY DOUGHTY, LEONARD GRZANKA, EUGENE GAY, and TOM AMOS. The international news is being relayed back to the states by those well known radio and TV correspondents ROD LABRECQUE, BETTI WALLACE, CHRIS KONIECZNY, JOHN O’KEEFE, and ANGIE BODUCH. Roamin’ ROD tells us that BOB ALEXANDER has been elected to a 5th term as representative for the Iskand Commonwealth of Puerto Rico! In the island prison we see prisoner 007 JUANITA MARQUES, a two-time loser in the sugar cane racket filing for her 6th pardon through the Mafia’s 1 attorney BOB ‘Lucky Lips” SILVA. Not far down the street, MADELINE DIAS and LINDA FERNAN- DES have set up a shoe business selling cuban heels for AVE “Fidel” CASMIRO’s bearded forces! Wartime WALLACE covering Viet Nam informs us that ROB JOHNSTON, DON HIGGINS, and JUNIOR “Inkspots” FERREIRA have set up their own business selling bottles of ink to Viet Namese students visiting the U.S. Embassy. Inside we see good-will ambassador MIKE THOMPSON passing out blotters to the U.S. staff of GINA AUDET, BETTY NIETUPSKI, and SHEILA McCALL. JIM “Benedict” CARLETON is using his brain for the other side after deflecting to their side when he disgracefully lost the platoon spelling bee to “Dapper” DAN CRAFTS. Outside the embassy we see BOB DROST and VERNER FRANCK leading a demonstration with signs reading “Exciting War — Boring Peace.” Taking part in the demonstration are DAVE NUMMY, DENNIS SYRIAC, and RON SEAVERS. Up north in Russia, “Kremlin CHRIS” tells us that Premier BRONISLAW CISLAK has sent up another spacecraft piloted by the first man-woman space team JIM ROONEY and CINDY MARTIN. Designers of the Craft were MARK SCYOCURKA and HARRY McDONOUGH, who by the way, introduced the world’s first smoking room into this rocket. On the ground in Moscow, still trying to paint the town red are artists RAY TIBBETTS, JANE LAZARZ, and FRANK BLANCHETTE. Honeymooning in that well-known Siberian climate are JOHN O’KEEFE and JUDY THERRIEN, LARAINE SILVA, LINDA SMOKOWICZ, DIANNE LaPIERRE, SUE CASEY, NANCY HAGEMAN and spouses. “Alabama ANGIE” reports that Governor GEORGE “Wallace” TRUSZ enacted legislation to prohibit any unnecessary noises outside the capitol building (so he can sleep). The instigators of this are MARION SALETNIK, CAROLYN METHE and BETSY ZIEMIAN. Proving that old cheerleaders never die, they just fade away. Forming the 39th annual march on the Alabama city is Civil Rights leader BOB GENTHNER. The first ones in line to start the march are BILL CASEY, KENNY GIROUX, DICK FULLER, and GORDON SUNTER. Expected to greet the marchers as they return is that Dixieland Band of PETER MASTALERZ, MIKE SIEROKOWSKI, TOM KIELBANIA, MARK LOVETT, DAVE GUERRA, TEDDY ZIENCINA, and LINDA SALOIO on her portable piano. Progressing into culture, starting with music; familiar sounds echo through the air as people everywhere are listening to that famous composition of GLENN JOHNSTON’S fifth . . . symphony that is. On the West Coast BETTY AVEZZIE has opened her new restaurant “Lizzie’s Italian Ritzie Pizzeria.” Taking the position as bouncer is MIKE ‘Pizon” BUONAIUTO while BARB SORCINELLI fills in as bar maid. For the floor show, M.C. STEVE “Tshonka Weeko” KRAWIEC used his 12 hour long speech to introduce Hollywood’s darlings “The Three Carrott Tops” PAUL GUILBAULT, RHETT SAVOIE, and SANDY MERKEL. Replacing the Old M.G.M. Film Studios is the great R.A.T. Studios owned by the illustrious directors and producers SHARYN ROBERGE, LARRY AUFFREY and JOHN TETRAULT. Starring in the first R.A.T. movie, “THE RETURN OF TARZAN” is PAUL CHRZAN as Tarzan with BECKY BRADFORD as Jane, and in thick make-up is MIKE BROWN as Cheeta, the chimp. Co box-office hits are “SILVERTOE” with FRED “James Bond” BRUNI co-starring ALICE TRETT, MARY ANN FORCELLA, LINDA WILL, and PAT TETREAULT, and “THE AMERICANIZATION OF TOM JONES” starring LEE HENRIQUES. Making their homes in SAN FRANCISCO are PAT, NANCY and JUDY Mc- CRORY. Taking place in the Sunshine State are the world’s heavy weight, middle weight, and feather weight boxing championship fights, pitting “Marvel” JIM MISLAK against “Masked” HARRY MILLS, “Sonny” ED LIBISZEWSKI vs. “Cassius” GREG CHACONAS, and finally “Sugar” JOE DAVIDSON fighting BOB McKEON. All protégés of that famous boxing coach ROLAND GREGORY. And competing in the California Open Golf Tournament are RICH ZIENCINA, ANDY KIELBANIA, WALTER KIELBASA, and DICK ZINA. On Broadway, many new plays have opened, starring familiar people. In ALBERT A. ZALUCKI’s newest play, “’?'LL CRY AGAIN,” is who else but DOLLY ARCHIBLE in the lead with co-star PETER “Rex” HARRIS. Dolly just finished with the long running “GOOD-BY DOLLY” which starred herself, BUCKY HARRIS, and that new method actress, JACKIE MADDEN. Cutting these plays to shreds with the sharp cut of their typewriter keys are critics HOLLY HEN- DRICKS, and EVELYN LANDRY and gossip columnist SUE ZAGRANSKI (who is famous for her frequent champagne parties.) Seen as frequenters of Broad- way are members of the “Jet Set” BARBARA RHODES, CYNTHIA ST. JOHN, and BARBARA SUPERNAW. Responsible for the production of these hits are the “freckle cream magnates” DANNY BERRY and FRED ZILCH, and THADDEUS WITOWSKI who made his millions in airplanes. Flying back to the old home town we see that ““Witowski Airlines” has just intro- duced a new set of “hostesses with the mostesses,’” JUDY WADAS, LOIS SHEPARD, CHARLENE QUINBY, MARY LETENDRE, DONNA CRAFTS, and LYNN LANGFORD, with head hostess JUDY McROBBIE. Piloting these aircraft are BOB HOLMES, RAY HURD, and the first commercial airlines woman pilot, “flying ace” CANDY COTO. Passengers flying home are KAREN MEL- BERG, STELLA CIBOROWSKI, PAT LaPINE, GLORIA LaROSE, and ANNA JOAQUIM. As the plane lands in Veteran’s Airfield, we see NANCY PRATT, SHARON TOWER, SUE LAAMANEN, TOM ZWIZINSKI, and BOB TROMBLY on hand to greet incoming friends. Ready to board the plane before takeoff is that world famous girls’ basketball team, known as the “Ludlow Globe Trotters,” consistin of captain, JACKIE BRODEUR, VIRGINIA GALEZIOWSKI, PAT HALUCH, CINDY LEITS, LINDA LEVER, JULIE PIROG, PAT TOKARZ, and that re- markable new player, SHIRLEY (S-T-R-E-T-C-H-) RODIMON. Also boarding the plane is New York socialite, CARLAJEAN DELLECESE. Providing taxi service from the Airfield are those two singing cab drivers, GERRI ANTICO and CHRIS DEC, who drive as well as they sing. Or you can take a JUDI HENRICHON rent-a-camel and also the consequences that go with it. In the heart of Ludlow, we see many new production companies such as DEBBIE KELSEY’s Katch Zipper Co., Inc., and DICK GRIFFING’s Wool Manufacturing Co. Also in business is LINDA POLLITT with her dance studio. (CAROL CHRZAN, DOROTHY CHMURA, and RUTH KOGUT are working for her, trying desper- ately to bring back the Charleston.) There is JOHN VAUTRAIN’s Gymnastics Building, and SUE KRYNICKI, JO ANN BURRAGE, DENISE BOUCHARD, and DIANE BEDAK have all opened a business together. However, the girls still don’t know what their business will be. Of course no wedding in town is complete without BARBARA BANAS’ Catering Service. At GORDIE GRIMES’ Service Station, PETE CIEMPA is still working on his car. Policemen BOB KULIG, OMER PICARD, and JIM BATES race by on a chase after BOB “Killer” KALINOSKI, who is wanted for disturbing the peace at one of BRENDA RAM- SAY’s poetry readings. Finally, coming back to the old Alma Mater, we see DEBBIE CONDON has taken over as principal with secretaries, NORMA DUARTE and BARB PALIKI. The English Department is headed by SANDY LAVOIE, while CHERYL INGALLS stands in for Miss Kudlic who is still faithful to L.H.S. CHERYL POBIEGLO is the new dietitian, while DIANE HERRICK is Home Economics instructor. CINDY STREMPEK is teaching typing, FAY WHITE is in the math department, and PAT POLYPOW is the new librarian. This is what the future holds for the class of °65 in 40 years. I swear by my crystal ball that all is to happen just as stated above.
