NS HUBBARD MEMORIAL LIBRARY innin Na) N | AINE SS Mieus Asal ‘ie af — see a iiiene delle mM Che Odlow Lion DEDICATION Our years at Ludlow High School have combined a variety of treasures—the sounds of happy voices, the spirit of good sportsmanship, the formation of our ideals and aspirations. During this time, the faculty has enriched these treasures, which are soon to become pleasant memories. Partic- ularly dear in the hearts of the class of 1961 is one who has given to her students not only of her education and knowledge, but also of her friendship and guidance—MRS. LILLIAN ZIWOT. All agree that she possesses the rare gift of understanding—the ability to guide us through confusing moments as well as through brighter times. Her smile has been a constant inspiration, and her pleasant manner, a cause for admiration. Although her departure has prevented her being with us at one of the most important moments of our lives—our graduation—we can never forget how much she has helped us to reach this goal. Therefore, it is our hope, that by dedicating the 1961 Ludlow Lion to MRS. LILLIAN ZIWOT, we have been able to express just a small portion of our sincere appreciation for her friendly understanding and devotion to this, the class of 1961! i, y? ents FOREWORD “The world will little note nor long remem- ber 25.” Wo 3 IN TRIBUTE -2__ eee 6 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION “Those whose hearts are in their work? fi SENIORS “We will be remembered in spite of our- selves.” 22 cuss re 12 ARCHIVES “Writing is the greatest invention in the world! !? __ rr ot ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES “We were learning while we laughed.” 78 CLASSES—1962, 1963, 1964 ee 104 SPORTS “The prize we sought is won.” 110 ee) SPONSORS, PATRONS, and FRIENDS See 130 mS. FOREWORD “The world will little note nor long remember what we say here,” but we can never forget what we did here. That great event of one hundred years ago, the Civil War, has had a lasting effect upon the lives of all Americans. In like manner, the events of our high school years will have a lasting effect upon our lives. These years have served as a testing ground, a time of decision. Like our forefathers, we too have struggled to achieve a great goal. We have strengthened our union through four years of work, fun, and friendship. We can never relive these years in actuality, but we can nostalgicly recall the significant events which have made them four unique years in our lives. It is, therefore, the purpose of this, our 1961 Ludlow Lion, to preserve forever—and in Lincoln’s own apt phrases—those “mystic memories” of our high school careers. MISS IDA J. HUBBELL Supervisor of Art, Ludlow Public Schools IN TRIBUTE Imagination, originality, creativity—these are but a few of the qualities which the students of Ludlow High School have noted while they worked with and learned from MISS IDA J. HUBBELL. Almost all of us have had the benefit of her able instruction at one time or another—some of us only in junior high school and others throughout their high school careers. Her patient help with decorations for class dances, with preparations for the Junior Promenade, and with the production of the Ludlow Lion has been a vital contribution to the success of our class. How can “Thank you” ever express our true feeling of gratitude? However, we the class of 1961, are honored to pay tribute to MISS IDA HUBBELL and to express the hope that her life in retirement will be as rewarding as she has made ours in school! ir Bork x1 Are ADMINISTRATION TO THE CLASS OF 1961: We, the members of the School Committee, extend to you, the members of the Class of 1961, congratulations on your reaching this important milestone of your lives. Our sincere best wishes are extended to you for success in whatever field of endeavor you may choose after your graduation from Ludlow High School. We hope you have received from our schools, not only the educational skills necessary for future success, but also those traits of character which will make you good citizens and an asset in any community of which you become a part. Herbert L. McChesney, Chairman Alexander Alves Edward F. Burgess Edward J. King Alfred A. LaRiviere “A pleasant and scholarly gentleman” “... increased devotion to that cause...” DR. HENRY F. TRAINOR—Superintendent of Mrs. Florence Curylo, Mrs. Ethel Melberg, Mrs. Donna Schools Haluch ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL GEORGE E. RUSSELL—“A friend and sympathizer” To the Class of 1961: The members of the Class of 1961 have in their achievements made a lasting impression on the history of Ludlow High School, and as the Principal of the school I extend my appreciation for all that you have done to further the traditions of this school. Your contributions in athletics to make Ludlow a name synonymous with high achievement, your diligence in your studies to enhance the school’s name, and your performance in extra-curricular activities to exemplify good conduct—all of these have been most worth-while. Your leadership of the student body and the standards you set have made all of us exceedingly proud of you, and your fame has been spread by the members of the Visiting Committee whom you impressed so favorably during the Evaluation phase of our high school in your senior year. Your yearbook serves as a fitting testimonial to your continued efforts and I for one will in the years to come, in reviewing the pages of this book, recall the very pleasant associations I have had with the members of this class. In your remembrances I know that you as individuals will look with satisfaction upon the things that you have accomplished as students. I hope that in your future successes you will recall the pleasant memories of the days at Ludlow High and consider that some measures of that success may be attributed to the background you received here. My congratulations are extended to all of you for the fine record you have achieved, with the expectation that your future years will be just as successful. — George E. KOLODZIEY “He led with wisdom” PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE to the Class of 1961 I should like to express to my fellow classmates congratulations on having com- pleted a very successful senior year. Our road toward a successful high school career has been paved through the joint cooperation of faculty and student body. During the past four years, our class events—class dances, class picnics, the “Prom,” our yearbook, and our Senior Show—have represented our ability to cooperate in getting the job done. The years to follow will hold countless experiences and opportunities for all of us. I hope, fellow classmates, that each one of you will derive from these experiences maximum rewards of knowledge and wisdom, good health, and nobility of character. In conclusion, I should like to say that it has been a great honor to have been president of a class, the members of which epitomize the best of what Ludlow High School is trying to accomplish intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Writing ae te the Qreate st 7 inventron OF the world CLASS HISTORY Abraham Lincoln once said, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation.” Four years ago, the Class of 1961 was the new nation brought forth on the continent known as Ludlow High. Thus began the four-year struggle on the battlefield of education. To insure success, we elected the following to lead us to our first victory: Commander-in-Chief David Markiewicz; General John Cameron; Secretary of Defense Kathryn Bergeron; and Finance Director of Military Operations Ronald Wickman. The Field Officers were Alice Bojan, John Curylo, Barbara Kling, Antonio Palatino, William Podoski, and Frank Trybulski. Our first major campaign, “Moonlight and Mistletoe,” ended in victory. A few months later, we again enjoyed the fruits of victory by winning the battle of “Hearts on High.” We closed a successful first year with a Class Picnic. Our second year saw us re-elect David Markiewicz as our Commander-in-Chief. His aides were General William Podoski; Secretary of Defense Anne Askew; and Finance Director of Military Operations Ronald Wickman. Chiefs of Staff were Gloria Chicoine, Carol Dansereau, Constance Kapinos, and Frank Trybulski. This year our plan of attack was victorious, as a result of the diversionary action employed in “Harvest Moon” and “Cup id’s Capers.” However, like any successful army, we had one defeat—the cancellation of the Sophomore Class Picnic. We began our third year by electing Richard Kolodziey as Commander-in-Chief; William Podoski, General; Constance Kapinos, Secretary of Defense; and Ronald Wickman, Finance Director of Military Operations. Field Officers were Alice Bojan, Brenda Fidalgo, Dorothy Leschuck, Janice Phoenix, and Frank Trybulski. Again we enjoyed a victory based on the astute military tactics of “Witchcraft.” The turning point for the Class of 1961 came on June 10, 1960, as we reveled at the never-to-be- forgotten “Twelfth of Never,” our Junior Promenade. Our final year in battle saw us elect Richard Kolodziey Commander-in-Chief. He was assisted by Robert Dvorchak, General; Constance Kapinos, Secretary of Defense; and Ronald Wickman, Finance Director of Military Operations. The four regiments were headed by Gloria Chicoine, Dorothy Leschuck, Janice Phoenix, and Eric Tyburski. “Moments to Remember” was our final military ball. To let the world know of the accomplishments achieved in this four-year struggle, we have collected our memoirs and published them in the 1961 edition of the Ludlow Lion, with the following in charge: Joyce Brunelle, editor; Mabel Barker, assistant editor; Sandra Kogut, business manager; William Phelan, art editor; Jane Pisarczyk and Margaret Warren, co-chief typists. To entertain our troops, the class presented the Senior Show, a “fabulous” success. As we enter the final stages of our struggle and participate in the Junior Prom- enade, Ivy Day, and the Class Banquet, we realize that this struggle, fought on the battlefield of education, has not been in vain. This struggle has made us realize the worth of education, and these final days have certainly made us recall our glorious victories. Now we await the final review, graduation, where those who have fought here so courageously will receive their “Medals of Honor.” We, the historians, cannot expect many to remember what we have written here, but the victories achieved by the Class of 1961 will never be forgotten. As we were dedicated soldiers on this battlefield, so will the successes we have achieved make us victorious once again when we march forth to meet the challenges of the battlefields of the future! 58 CLASS POEM There are memories we'll have forever Of the deeds we did together, Of the days spent as one, Of the friendships that were spun. Friends whose names we may forget, But whose friendship was well met. We talked to them about the life That was grand—yet filled with strife. Teachers, who our lessons taught, Bestowed knowledge that couldn’t be bought. The great impression they have made We're told will never, never fade. The many pages that we turned, The many facts that we have learned, Will follow us throughout the days As we all go our separate ways. Now the time has finally come, Although life’s task has just begun, To say “‘Good-bye!”’ to high school days That we'll remember in numerous ways. 59 CLASS WILL We, the members of the class of 1961, having proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are ‘‘the cream of the crop’?; and knowing that our presence has enriched the quality of the student body, are about to depart from these hallowed walls. We trust that the following will be executed as we desire. To our beloved FACULTY we leave—peace and quiet. To the UNDERCLASSMEN, we leave fond memories. To the JUNIOR CLASS, who are haunting us to leave, we give the front rows in assembly; how we waited for those seats of honor! (We were planning to leave the driver ed. car—but we didn’t think it would last.) To the SOPHOMORES, we bequeath a single sprig of ivy with hopes that if they start to nourish it now, it’ll be ready in two years. And to the lone, low, lowest underclassmen, FRESHMEN, we leave only the wonderful memories of ourselves. FLASH! The no- torious czar of the outer-world, FRANK TRYBULSKI, has just destroyed the planet earth with a multi-rocket attack engineered by ROBERT PEASE. Because the class of °61 are on the moon, these two men are the only remaining earthlings. Through a unanimous vote, RICHARD KOLODZIEY has been elected ruler of the new colony, while ROBERT DVORCHAK is second in command. Their cabinet con- sists of: RONALD WICKMAN, Department of the Treas- ury; FRANK EVANGELISTA, Department of Justice; HARRY NEY, Department FRANK SACZAWA, Department of Guard-House-Lawyering; CHESTER RYBA, Department of Inter-Planetary Rela- tions; ANNE BOURDEAU, Department of the Post Office. of Education; SUSAN BASSLER is editor of the major newspaper, News at Moonlight. PETER CZAJKOWSKI has just opened his first atomic-fuel station called ‘Pumpin’ Pete’s.”. DICKY PALATINO has started a continuation of the Double-D—The Triple-D, “Dazzling Dicky’s Dairy.” DAVID SZABLA is striving toward his first million with his “Smilin’ Szab’s Stores.” JUDITH JACK, BETSY PETROLATI, THERESA SNIADOWSKI, LOIS RAE, DIANNE RICARDI, JAN- ICE PHOENIX, JOANN BUSHEY, ROBERTA PAO- LETTI, MARSHA MINNEY, MARTHA SELDEN, and JANET CONNOR have just recorded a million seller, “Who Said, ‘Diamonds Aren’t a Girl’s Best Friend?’ ” STEWART LESLIE, manager of the Moon-Shine Markets, spends much of his spare time trying to console STEVE MASTALERZ, who has misplaced his Super- Duper Ray Gun. . JEANNE TWAROG has had the honor of having the first radio station named after her, “Talkative Twarog’s Telecast.” WILLIAM PODOSKI has invented a new vitamin, 64 “Billy’s Brain Builder.’ DENNIS BRUNELLE, multi- millionaire who made his fortune by hiding Russian flags sent to the moon, furnished his brain for experi- mental purposes—amazing results! CONNIE KAPINOS has just opened her exclusive Anti-Radar Dress Shop, called “Connie’s Casual Corner.” The chief designers are BARBARA LIBISZEWSKI, JO- ANNE LEGER, and BILLY PHELAN. RAYMOND SALOIO, RICHARD HOWES, JIMMY COREY, DAVID MARKIEWICZ, and DENNIS SAW- ICKY have been asked to entertain at the banquet featuring the unveiling of “The Statue of Mabel” in honor of MABEL BARKER, the first woman into space. In her hand, Mabel holds a book written by JOYCE BRUNELLE entitled, “How I Almost Goofed and Got a Pie “Pasquini’s Parking Paradise” is owned and operated by RICHARD PASQUINI, who has recently purchased a section of land called ‘‘Veteran’s Park for Moonmen.” PATRICIA APPICELLI has just published her first two books, “J Grew in Width Instead of Height” and “How It Feels to be Stepped On.” WILLIAM KOSCHER, star of the movie, “I Was a Teen-Ager for Thirty Years,” is constantly being mobbed by fans. ROBERT TOWER is employed as his body- guard. WILHEMINA PIANOWSKI, better known as “The Flower of the Musical World,” will be the first one’ to perform at the newly built Opera House. On the same program will appear BRENDA FIDALGO, CYNTHIA ERB, and VERONICA COBB. RAYMOND COUTURE has been given the task of keeping track of WILLIAM WHITE, who is accom- plished at “borrowing” the goalpost at away football games and making his escape via a contraption known as a “rocket-bike.” IRENE FERNANDES and MARY QUEIROGA- have recently been awarded gold medals for spirit shown at soccer games. J x t ce i, ; Pro-football player, ERIC TYBURSKI, is floating in ace—it seems he kicked the football so hard he went nto orbit! _A solid gold ticket has been awarded to SANDRA OGUT for selling the most tickets to the opening of RGARET WARREN’S stageplay, “I Led the Parade.” MAXINE RICHARD’S book “How I Faked Out Miss Kudlic When She Yelled, ‘Showers,’” has been banned by the town’s library committee consisting of HELANA MIGACY, JANE PISARCZYK, MARION MAZUR, and JEAN TROMBLEY. ANNE ASKEW is employed in the office of Doctor JOSEPH ROBERT. DORIS DUBE and ANNE GREG- ORY were the first patients. Both were suffering from the shock of having scored one hundred run s each for BRIAN SMITH’S baseball team, “Smitty’s Sluggers,” as they toppled MILTON PROVOST’S team of “Provost’s Pacers,” managed by DOROTHY LESCHUCK. CYNTHIA COTO and DAVE BERNARD, better known as “The Singin’ Swingin’ Redheads,” have recently added a new member to their group, KATHY BERG- ERON, who, for obvious reasons, was unable to join the original duo. Lawyer ROBERT TIBBETTS is soon to appear in court before Her Honor, Judge MAUREEN McLEISH to defend LARRY MADDEN, who claims he was going only one way on a one-way street. The case will be heard as soon as the Judge’s secretary LORRAINE ZIEMBA returns from her vacation at GRACE DIAS’ hotel, “Gracie’s Garden.” ROSEMARY GUZIK, CHRISTINE PODSADOWSKI, PATRICIA BOBOWIEC, MARION SOUSA, and CAROL NOWAK have recently won universal acclaim for doing a perfect One-Two—One-Two-Three exercise. The owner of the plushiest night club is LINDA CARDIN. The club is mobbed nightly because “Bubbles Bojan” alias ALICE BOJAN, is the star attraction. The girls no longer have any worries because GLORIA CHICOINE has just opened a beauty salon named “Gigglie Gloria’s Salon.” Her chief stylists are MICH- AEL KOCHANEK and ALEX STUPAK. Showing off their new space coiffures are JILL RODIMON and PRISCILLA FENNEY. Dr. JOHN CAMERON has just invented a new type cast which will not hinder the wearer because it blends with that wearer. JOANNE VIGNEAULT, BEVERLY WALCZAK, and LORRAINE ROBERTS were his as- sistants. JOHN LOPATA was the first one to try it and commented, “It’s out of this world!” A new amusement park, “Goodreau’s Goody Park,” under the management of ALBERT GOODREAU is the newest moon fad. Enjoying the amusements are GER- ALDINE STRYCHARZ, JEANNE’ TONDREAU, and STANLEY LIBISZEWSKI. The Sambor and Sambor law firm, consisting of FRAN and LUCY SAMBOR, are busily engaged in defending NANCY LAKE in her lawsuit against JOSEPH MARTIN and ANTHONY JARVIS . It seems they disrupted one of Nancy’s socials when they insisted: that RAYMOND PROKOP, the head butler, leave so they could start the poker game! LINDA JO SANFORD is now teaching the newest dance craze, “Jo-Jo’s Jumpin’ Jive.” CORRINE MITCH- ELL and SUSAN SMOLEN have already got the beat and never stand still. PAUL SALETNIK is trying to eclipse this dance with his creation, “Saletnik’s Sassy Swing.” JANICE McARTHUR has inherited a yacht, but be- cause there is no water on the moon, she has converted it to a candy store called the “Calorie Counter.” MARY ANN GONCALVES and NANCY MASTALERZ rent the upper half of the deck for their flower shop. They’ve made a million by crossing a turnip and a rose! And now, upon completion of this view of the future, I, GRENDEL, a goddess of the future, ride off into the wild blue universe; as I ride I see again in the crystal ball atop my electomic broom that the above events shall take place, as I have predicted, in the year 2000. 65 Ivy Day Committee and Advisors “Theirs was the task” “Memory will hallow all we’ve known.’ “Tt is a great day” 66 : : : ee 4 : “It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” By rs “In accordance with an established custom .. .” “eee a Rena oy “The year is drawing towards its close.” 67 pas MABEL BARKER, IVY DAY ORATOR MR.
