We entered the first galaxy in a rocket ship piloted by Henry Giza, assist- ed by co-pilot, Carol Benoit. Cadets Frank Fijal and Milton Adao kept the journals, while spacemen Barbara Brodeur, Dolores Soares, and Joan Szlo- sek represented us. Our journey heavenward halted, for the time being, in order to hold an afternoon dance and a picnic at King Philip’s Stockade. In our Sophomore year, the Hic Hop began the second lap of our journey through the spaceways. Under the leadership of Henry Giza and Fred Cury- lo, co-pilots, and cadets Carol Benoit and Annette Waszeciak, and spacemen Barbara Brodeur, Joan Szlosek, and Barbara Kurpaska, we held our annual Banquet. The journey half-completed, our spirits really rose with the Jaunty Jive of 55. We sprinkled the class of ’54 with our heavenly prom, Stardust. The progress of our flight was made successful by pilot, Myra Silva; co-pilot, William Smits; and cadets, Carol Benoit and Annette Waszeciak. The re- maining crew included Barbara Brodeur, Gloria Nunes, and Carol Redin. Our journey nearly completed and our goal in sight, we reached new at- mospheric heights under the command of John Hiney, ship’s pilot; co-pilot, Celeste Queiros, and cadets, Carol Benoit and Annette Waszeciak, along with spacemen Barbara Brodeur, Dolores Soares, and Joan Szlosek. On our course, we charted school sports as the theme of our Booster Ball and the Senior Dance. The major event of our historic flight was our Jukebox °55, annual senior show, in which everyone participated and which had a sell- out for both performances. All too soon our Journey to the Stars must come to an end. We are now looking forward to the Junior Prom, Ivy Day, the Class Banquet, and that long-awaited Graduation Day! JOURNEY TO THE STARS The Class of ’55, on its journey to a star, Has taken a path that will lead them far. Four years of life behind them spent To live forever in this event. Trial and error, failure and success, Strengthen determination, nevertheless. For with goal in sight, life’s climax so near, We face the future without doubt or fear. Encouragement of teachers, the smile of a friend Bring our school days to a happy end. For when Ludlow High behind us stands, A firm beginning’s in our hands! 39 THE LUDLOW LION | First row, left to right: Jane Stachelek, Mr. Grattan H. Aa MYSTIC MUSINGS To celebrate the beginning of the year 2000 A.D., we bring you our epical telecast as our rocket ship speeds on ahead. We will take you to the neighboring planets of the universe for an eye-witness account of the progress taking place. First, we'll take you to Jupiter, where Jack Hiney, the first president of the United Planets, is about to present his State of the Universe address. Taking notes of this address is Jane Stachelek, busily writing shorthand. If these notes are decipherable, we will read them to you at our next telecast. In the crowd, we see Alfred Goncalves, still “Pancho” to everyone and now the proud owner of all A P stores, which spread to the four corners of outer space. We also see the two great skaters, Joyce Goodreau, queen of the Roller Derby, and Betty Ann Dakers, Ice Skating Champion. Neither of the two has yet admitted which form of skating is the better. After visiting Jupiter, we go to Mars, the music planet, in our x-55 rocket ship, de- signed by Billy Smits and piloted by Marie DeCarlo. We are greeted by the music king of spaceland, Don Burrage. We find Milton Adao and Judy Moore competing for first prize in the best original dance step contest. Up to this time, the dance craze has been the Jetterhop, originated by Fred Curylo and Frank Pianowski. Those who have not heard yesterday’s telecast will be glad to know that Henry Giza has now sold over 100,000,000 space recordings. These recordings were made by the Rhythm Kings, conducted by Frank Grybosh. In the musical aggregation is the one and only Spacebone, a simply divine musical instrument invented and played exclusively by Stanley Warzecha. Before we fly to Venus, here’s a news flash! Our noted ballet dancers, Frank Per- kowski and Stanley Newman, have contracted that new and rare disease—Ensomya- thin. Also, Miss Stratosphere of 2000 is Miss Helen Bojan! Here at Venus, we visit the art studios, managed by Donald Wareham. He intro- duces us to Joan Provost and Betty Ann Gamble, who have painted the ultramodern conceptions of “Outer Space” and “The Mad Spaceships.” For a quick snack, we’ll stop at the Skyscraper Drugstore. We are served by those two dazzling waitresses, Irene Wdowiak and Terry Pisarczyk. They offer us Wilma Gardner’s patented ice cream concoction, the “Space Cream Split.” As a result of this snack, we hurry over to Dr. Kurpaska’s office on Saturn. Her assistant, Frances Magada, tells us that we must be doctored by her nurses, Hope Gowans and Elsie Harrica, as Dr. Kurpaska is busy conquering that dreaded disease of Ensomyathin, which, you will remember, has already affected our ballet dancers. While we are on this planet, we shall interview Marilyn Surprenant, superintendent of Spaceview Sanitarium for Practical, Jet-Repelled Nurses. We first interview Doro- thy Tetrault, Captain of the School of Healers of Space Ailments, where Charles Stuart, the United Space wrestler, is a patient. We hope that we shall see Beverly Ehlers, X-Ray technician at the Veterinarian Hospital owned by Dr. Killum, alias Robert Slate. Now for an important interruption—Gloria Nunes has become the first spacewoman to reach the Outer Edge. while Agnes Pieczarka has been voted Miss Dior of Planet X. Back to Station LHS. Now we proceed to Pluto and tour the Spaceville High School, 48 MYSTIC MUSINGS where Annette Waszeciak is teaching her first course of Stratospheric Math using Mental Telepathy. We all wish her pupils luck. Principal of Spaceville is Dolores Soares, and the coach is Bob Chenaille, who has retired-from his great pitching career. His assistant is Frank Petrolati, carrying on from high school. Frank Fijal is teaching Consumer Economics. On the walls of the school, we see two plaques—one honoring Debbie Donaldson, basketball player for the Lady Celtics, who has reached a record of fifty baskets per game, and the other, Lando Jorge, pitcher for the Space Spirates who helped them win the Inter-Planetary Pennant by winning forty games. As usual, we see Tommy Gregoire zooming away from school in his newest Ford Rocket. Let’s stop at Myra Silva’s dress shop, “The Metal Toga,” and look at the newest styles, modeled by the one and only Audrey Blanchard. On a nearby asteroid, we visit the field house where we are cordially greeted by Jack Hayes and Bob McCarthy, co-captains of Pluto’s Orbits, pro football team which has won six straight championships since our boys joined them. Too, we visit Leo Garrow, manager of the team. We shall stop to refuel the rocket ship at Pat Pasquini’s Atom Rocket Refueling Station. Listen—William Ricardi and Ray Wrona have added more fame to their careers in baseball by establishing the first settlement at the Outer Edge—thanks to Gloria, of course. Our business planet, Neptune, is in view, and we are arriving at the law offices of Joan Szlosek and Mary Johnston. In the same building is located the penthouse resi- dence of Gladys Giza. Across from her lives Ronnie Hwalek, who has been attempting to build the first bridge from Earth to Mars. He has one trouble—it keeps floating away. Barbara Brodeur is the world’s richest woman. Carol Benoit, banker of Nep- tune, stores Barbara’s money, but she hopes she will not have to build another addi- tion if Barbara continues to make money. Jeannette Morrissette is Barbara’s chief dietician and Loyce Martin is her secretary. The noisiest and busiest section of this planet is in the United Planets building. Nancy Monette is the chief editor of the United Planets’ big three magazines, Jite, Flite, and Lite, always favorites on the local earth stands. Her photographer is Margaret Falconer, who is now taking pictures of Neptune’s mayor, Bob Ober, playing golf with Henry Ouellette, vice president of local 802 of the Spacemen’s Interplumbery Commission. Our last stop is to find out how Sally Queiros is coming along since her graduation from high school. She has been trying to sell Spatial Life Insurance and hasn’t sold a policy yet! Will any of you please buy one and give her confidence? Uranus is our final planetary port of call; also on her last tour is Earth’s ambassa- dor of good will, Carol Redin. We are most happy to see her. With Carol is Eileen Williamson, planetary consul to the United Solar System. Before we return to Earth, we shall stop at the rocket garage owned by Leon Wlodyka, outstanding mechanic of the spacemobile industry. By the way, John Saletnik has become the greatest manu- facturer-salesman of space-o-phones, useful to our business friends. Now that our telecast has come to an end, let us remind you to tune in tomorrow and hear our visit- ing duo, Claire Talbot and Phyllis Saletnik, who will entertain you with their singing until we return tomorrow to tell you about what’s going on in the United Planets. 49 50 CHRISTMAS PROGRAM A program was presented by the combined Ludlow High School Glee Club on Wednesday evening, December 22, 1954, in the Auditorium.
