Millane, this 1954 edition of © THE LUDLOW LION 3 Foreword The sound of laughter echoing in the halls, the spirit of good sportsmanship, the inculcation of ideals and goals, always with honor and loyalty in mind--all epitomize our high school experiences, Thus, we have chosen as our theme the illustrious, though mythical, reign of King Arthur--a period which we feel symbolizes these sterling qualities more than any other in the literary history of the world. The staff, therefore, is proud to present this chronicle of this important epoch in our athletic and academic careers-- the 1954 LUDLOW LION! , VERA B. WHEATON In appreciation of twenty-six years of undaunted € fort in behalf ofthe students of Ludlow, we, the Class of 1954, are pleased and honored to pay high tribute to Mrs, Vera B. Wheaton. We feel it fitting and proper that we take this opportunity to acknowledge publicly in the 1954 edition of THE LUDLOW LION our indebtedness to her - a woman of culture and high moralintegrity - for helping thousands of students of the Ludlow High School to become better citizens of tomorrow. A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1954 Many of the ills of our society today are caused by the lack of consideration for the “other fellow. The ‘Prom other fellow may be a member of the family, a neighbor, a fellow worker, or another nation. the Ludlow High School, we like to believe, is a place where we practice the democratic way of life, where we S. learn to live and work together, and where the rights and ages privileges of the other fellow are recognized. This way of living I hope youwill carry out of school into the adult life which you are now beginning. I wish you, each and everyone, God Speed! PAUL R, BAIRD Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1954 This book is just another chapter in your life. Others will follow, but few perhaps will have as much to offer as your high school days, You have seen yourself grow physically and mentally. Many of you have made the most of your time and opportunities. Some of you have been satisfied with doing as little as possible to get by this period of life. Much of your success in the future will be based upon what you did during your high school days. There will be many times when you will glance at this book at different stages of your life. May it bring back fond memories of the pleasant days in Ludlow High. May it alsoremind you of the false fearsthatnever materialized, Cherish this book because it will be the only living memory of what you were ten, twenty-five, or fifty years ago. You have my best wishes for the best years of your lifeto followthe years you spent at Ludlow High School, JOSEPH J. Chronicles of SF In the annals of us knights-errant, the year 1950 A.D. was memorable in that we set out on our four-year quest of Knowledge. Sheathed in the transparent cloak of Ignorance, but armed with scriptorial implements and imbued with a desire to shed this onerous cloak as soon as possible, our entire corps followed the leadership of Robert Nowak (president) on to the high- ways leading to the sunny lands of Knowledge. Assistant leaders of the corps were Virginia Silva, vice president; Stuart Smith, secretary; Janis Johnston, treasurer; and Amy Almeida and Jay Millane, representatives. On our journey southward, however, we enjoyed two diversions - the Pages' Hop” and the corps picnic. In the second year of our Crusade, we elected new leaders: Morrison Ferrier, presid ent; Charlotte Jurkowski, vice president; Stuart Smith, secretary; Janis Johnston, treasurer; and Nancy Makarewicz, Jay Millane, and Rose Marie Saletnik, representatives. Because our prog- ress was easier this year, the Councils of State allowed three feasts - a fall frolic, a mid-win- ter banquet, and a Mid-summer's Day field day. The third year of our Crusade truly began our entry into the land of Knowledge. In this year, we met and triumphed over the pitfalls of American history, American literature, Stenog raphy I, and physics, It was only through the leadership of the following officers that our social activities were equally successful: David Minney, president; Charlotte Jurkowski, vice president; Toni Martins, secretary; Janis Johnston, treasurer; and Phyllis Baron, Jay Millane, and Rose Marie Saletnik, representatives. Through their efforts, we enjoyed to the hilt our “Kool Kat Kaper” and the annual Junior Promenade. Basking in the growing warmth of the land of Knowledge, the fourth year of our Crusade saw us advancing ever onward under the leadership of the same officers, with Sylvia Gadaire, Jay Millane, and Virginia Silva, representatives. Despite the ambuscades of academic chemis- try, Stenography II, Driver Education, and English literature, we came finally to the zenith of our educational quest. At last we shed the cloak of Ignorance! In the broad sunlight of hard- won knowledge, we celebrated our achievements with a “Booster Day Dance, our WINTER CARNIVAL (the annual senior show), and the production of the 1954 LUDLOW LION. Having attained the land of Knowledge, we anticipate the final festivities of our Crusade - the 1954 Junior Promenade, Ivy Day, the Corps Banquet, and Commencement, 35 ing Praise of ludlosw Let's raise our’ you- ces Sing Students all 36 ai H igh RO U cherish mem'ries of our Ludlow ‘ daysand ears ; in Your @Yms We krew m our heerts we Ss lw Teme sc Spare a, smtle tis but to reminis 3 % K =z: 5 = = =a z 3 here AOS Fe 38 By Pepcdlar r-écclaim BOYS GIRLS JAY MILLANE ----------- Most Likely to Succeed - - - ------- PHYLLIS BARON JOSEPH DePONTE - ----------- Class Saint - ------------- MARY KISSER DONALD CAMERON - ---------- Class Sinner - - - ------ NANCY MAKAREWICZ DAVID MINNEY - ------------ Best Looking = = == - = === --= - AMY ALMEIDA JOSEPH McNEILL - - ------- Woman Hater - Man Hater - - - - - - - - = CAROL LEWICKI JAY MILLANE - ------------ Most Ambitious - - ---------- PHYLLIS BARON JOSEPH McNEILL - - --------- Class Politician - - ------ - JACQUELINE BOUCHER JOSEPH DePONTE - ----------- Most Bashful - - - -------- LOUISE PISARCZYK ROBERT NOWAK - - ---------- Class Musician - - --------- JOAN CARPENTER DONALD CAMERON - ----------- Noisiest - - --------+---- TONI MARTINS DAVID MINNEY - ---------- Best All Around - ----------- PHYLLIS BARON DONALD CAMERON - - --------- Class Clown - - - -- -- - CHARLOTTE JURKOWSKI WILLIAM RUSSELL - - ---------- Best Driver - ----------- MILDRED WADAS ARMAND QUEIROS - - --------- Hot Rodders - - - --------- MILDRED WADAS DAVID MINNEY - ------------ Most Athletic - --------- CHARLOTTE MORAIS ARMAND QUEIROS - - -------- Class Nighthawk - - ---------- FONI MARTINS DAVID MINNEY - ------------ Most Popular - - - ---------- PHYLLIS BARON ARMOS BOURDEAU - - --------- Class Mechanic - - - ------- - SYLVIA GADAIRE WILLIAM RUSSELL - - - - --------- Happiest ----------- JEANETTE CANNING ROBERT FONTAINE - - -- ------- Class Spendthrift - - - - - - - - JACQUELINE BOUCHER MORRISON FERRIER --- - ------- - Class Worrier - - - ---------- PHYLLIS BARON TILL THEN - -------------- Favorite Song ----------------- TRYING GEORGE E, RUSSELL - - - - - - - - - Teacher Least Likely - - - - - - FLORENCE M, SAULNIER to be Forgotten ADOrn wma Pro Merito is a state-wide honor society that was established in 1917. Hi-Y's chief contribution to the students of L.H.S, is the annual Hi-Y Show, pre- sented for the entertainment of the audience with first, second, and third prizes awarded to those contestants who are not members of Hi-Y. A great deal of preparation goes into this venture, and every member of the organi - zation contributes to the show in some capacity. The treasury was amply supplemented as a result, and this money was used to buy a going-away gift for Mr. Millane. Hi-Y also sponsors an annual dance. 1954 Hi-Y officers are: President, David Minney; Vice President, William Russell; Secretary, Morrison Ferrier; Treasurer, Jay Millane, WY ppiveR EDUCATION Mr. Rooney's Problems of Democracy National Office Management Association The Vera B, Wheaton Future Teachers of America Club Mrs. Szlosek and Miss Brooks supervise the Future Nurses of America. | 80 19 Kucglts 54 President - = = = = + 'S 3 © = = 3) === = — |= == Myra Silva Vice President = - = = =)3 = = = == 43-78) sie William Smits Secretary 9 Se) Sh Sw a ee Carol Benoit Treaswreti-) = a eee Annette Waszeciak Representative, 204) =) 2 0= == Barbara Brodeur Representatlye,;, 200 '=(- == oh ee ee Gloria Nunes Representatives 212) = (ee o8e a5 eon Carol Redin CORPS 204 First row, left to right: Betty Gamble, Rita Gates, Carol Benoit, Barbara Brodeur, Helen Bojan, Margaret Falconer, Wilma Gardner, Second row, left to right: Deborah Donaldson, Beverly Ehlers, Audrey Blanchard, Marie DeCarlo, Betty Dakers, Sheila Cadwell.
