This is true only when the possessor of this little knowledge assumes it to be total knowledge. Much of the misery of mankind is due to those who assume that their little learning is all learning. Look upon your graduation as a commencement--the beginning of a larger education that will continue, yet will never be completed. To us, Ludlow High School is a laboratory in the democratic way of life, where young people of all social, economic, and religious backgrounds learn to know, to work, and to play together. This experience, coupled with an understanding that your education is just beginning, will develop responsible, growing citizens, working together to make this world a better place in which to live. We wish you God speed! Charles R, Gadaire, Ph.D. Chairinan Leo J. Brodeur Michael V. Our forefathers came from many lands To work with heads and hearts and hands, From England, Scotland, France, and Wales, In spite of stormy ocean gales, From Portugal, Italy, and Greece, Brought by hope of freedom and peace, They brought their songs and crafts and skills And settled among New England hills; This heritage made steadfast men Who worked for good with shovel and pen To build our churches, schools, and mills, Their promised ambitions to fulfill. As we set sail on untried seas, Building from memories like these, Their strength and courage still uplift, As from the past the best we sift, We'll strive to keep our country free, A better place for you and me, Looking backward we can see, We, the Class of 53, That high school years have made us one-- Filled with study, work, and fun. To und erclassmen, all of you, We hand these fine traditions true! Miriam R, Ashwell rl SON In September 1949, we members of the Class of 1953 set out to enjoy the many freedoms which our forefathers drew up in the Constitution. As our first president we elected Robert R. Mishol, assisted by Peter N. Ther- rien. The class secretary was John R. Kochanek, and the treasurer was Barbara A, Gay. In our domain, we held a successful afternoon dance and later in the year a TALENT REVIEW. To conclude our first term we made an excursion to Forest Park, where we enjoyed a gala picnic, When elections confronted us again, Robert R, Mishol was chosen president and Stephen A. Makuch, vice president. Helping them by keeping class archives was John Kochanek, and Alice R, Giza kept our books. With these capable leaders, we held a banquet in the school cafeteria which was followed by a pleasant dance in our auditorium, In the spring, Mountain Park was the scene of a picnic, the year's final activity. In our junior year, the school was all aglow when we sponsored our first eve- ning dance, “The Rhythm Club of '53. It was prosperous because of the leader- ship of Alice R , Giza, president, assisted by Joan M. Rzepka, vice president; Mary Pires, secretary; and Karl Kania, treasurer, The stage was glittering with decora- tion in June for our most outstanding venture--the Junior Prom, which we called Musical Fantasy, In the fall of 1952, our class elected as leaders: Peter N. Therrien, president; Kenneth Gauthier, vice president; Karl Kania, secretary; and Stephen A. Makuch, treasurer, Our fall dance, The Ghostly Gallop, brightened the auditorium with weird decorations! We held many assemblies to plan the numerous events of our senior year--the Senior Show, our spring dance, Ivy Day, Class Night, and Class Banquet. We are also anticipating the Prom of '53, given for us by the Class of '54, and Commencement --the end of one era and the beginning of another for us, mem- bers of the Class of ‘53. y 4 4 y y y 4 4 ; y ¢ ¢ y , y ; é ¢, % QO S 4 PETER N, THERRIEN, II AMBITION: To be a successful fashion designer. They decorate the rooms for Christmas, and in January, conduct the March of Dimes campaign in the entire school system, They nominate candidates for the Babe Ruth Sportsman- ship Awards and for Govenors' Day at the Eastern States Exposition. The Stu- dent Council also sponsors the G.O, Ball. Every year Student Council sends a delegate to the state and divisional Conventions, This year, Ludlow High was host to the forty member schools of the Western Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. It was the first time in ten years that a convention of such magnitude was held in the school, Miss Florence M. Saulnier, advisor of the WMASC as well as advisor of our local council, was in charge of the convention. Robert Mishol, vice president of WMASC, greeted the guests whose convention was made successful by all the pre-planning done by Mary Pires, chairman, and the members of the senior and junior Stu- dent Councils, and the members of Pro- Merito. PROM ER i @ Pro Merito, a state honor society established in 1917, was introduced into the Ludlow schools in 1935. The idea of having a Junior Pro Merito began in 1923. In January, 1951, this honor society be- came a part of the National Honor Society, A state convention is held in May and regional meetings in the fall. Members are elected to Pro Merito at the beginning of their junior year. Pro Merito members read proclamations in assem - blies and the Bible in Chapel. They also introduce speakers and put on special assemblies for the student body. Each Christmas, members sell seasonal cards and paper. Every year Pro Merito gives a party for the underclassmen who have made the honor roll, A new feature of Pro Merito is a Christmas luncheon for pupils planning to attend college; at this luncheon, college students and students from schools of nursing, business colleges, and the like return to give first - hand impressions of their initial year in schools of higher learning. This year proved to be successful in that ten alumni returned to tell of their experiences. 45 Seated, left to right: Mary Pires, Corresponding Secretary; Joan M. Rzepka, Treasurer; Leander J.
