' VARSITY TRACK The five thinclade Ato graduate ere: Truman Atkin- son, Arne Anderson. Chet Brooks, .Walt Krups, and Gaethern Mroczka. Truman and Arne were the main stays. in the pole vault. Ohet placed in the high jump, broad jump and ran in -the relay team. Walter placed in the half mile and shotput. 'Koch' ran the hurdles. smrroas Wm cuss :mn A Winning by a 35 to BSQ margin the 1941 class won the 019-ee track meet. Members of the squad were: Frank Hak- fal, Arland Gifford, Chet Brooks, Ray Holliok, L e e Nasa, and 'Koch' llrouzka. The class received a trophy for their good work. The volleyball chan.g.ionship was caytured by our ,junior AA team, Cap.-tained by Marjorie Olsen and managed by MaryJane Burch. ' In our last. year of soccer, The Panthersnwere again vic torious with Marcia Vee F-ly as Captain. This year the Senior B's held the honor of being the champs in basketball with Jerry Hall as Captain and Jane Ruschkewicz as manager. no V a S P 0 A7743 Although the Orioles are accustomed to being champ- ions, they fell short of that goal by but one game this passed season. The season gone and never to return was one of the toughest any of Coach Read's men ever played. A good slice of the 'Orange and Black' team are ser- ious, and all of these boys feel that they owe at least part of what they have achieved to Coach Read. 'me boys that tried their best are the following: Chet Brooks the or-io1e's big 180 pound fullback played his last game for L. H. S. Chet oould carry that ball and when he got into the open he could really peddle the mail. He was a good defense man as well as offense. The gap left by him will be hard to fill. Frank Rakfal was the rigid guard that made the oppone- nts life look plenty sick when he made a hole in it big enough for a wagon. His positions will be hard to fill. Speaking of good guards Fred Eiokler is no exception Fred did his share of damage to the opponentfs life to, and always made sure he got his man. A better guard will be hard to find. At right tackle was big, Walt Krupa. When Walt get his man, his man knew it, you bet. He made A11-Northern and deserves it. Walt is as good as they make them. Ray Holliok played quarterback and signal caller. when Ray called a signal he knew why he was calling it. He threw a good share of the passes this last season. Ray made things he did, count. The tall rugged end who towered over all histeam mates was none other than Truman Atkinson. He played the game with the greatest of effort. Truman caught more than his share of passes, and this meant yardage. The out-standing back who took that pig skin on many a line plunges was whole-hearted Ned Bowden. But unfortunate- ly all good things must come to an end,' Ned graduates this year. He is a two letter man. 21

Stanley Horowski was outstanding in the arthof kicking 'and passing. Almost at will Stan could kick that ball to 'any part of the field. He kicked the Oriole eleven out of many tight spots. His kicking was the turning point of many games. 'Stan' is a three letter man. , Alton Haynor was another Oriole gridder. A Alton played guard, and played tlis position well. He liked to throw a hard block. Al's absence will be felt greatly next season. At left halt' we had Simon Ezdebski. Si was very hard to stop and was a very good defensive player. He ls a two year man and will be missed next fall. Arne Anderson played reserve end and was very handy. He also played some backfield. His best play wus catching a long pass in the Sccttville game. Our most dignified player t1.Ls year wus no other than Koch Moroczka. Koch played end and was always ready to do his job. He had his most fun in the Mnnlstoe game. Carl Buckets Olmstead played a tackle on tixls years team. He played his best against Cadillac and Mount Pleasant. BASKETBALL Losing only two games in 10 starts is the record acco- mplished of the Oriole Basketball squad thls season. Not quite as impressive as in years gone by, it still is one'o1' the best in the North. The Orioles took second place ln the conference in which they have dominated five consecu- tive years. ' Now a little about the Seniors that did so well for the old Alma Hater. Henry Schoenherr was a reserve guard. He was ready to be called upon at any tlrrze. Hank played best against Man- istee but showed up as well against Fremont. At the other regular guard position was Ray Flash Hollick. Ray was the highest scorer among the guards. His great speed on the tip off play usually melted him two points. Bob Greening was a reserve guard and forward. Bob scored the winning bucket against Alpena in our two point victory. He was very capable of playing both guard and a forward and showed lots of action this year. Our Captain and high scorer for the year was Chet 'Clipper' Brooks. Chet set a new Ludlngton record for one game with his 27 points against Shelby. He received the 3rd highest number of votes for All-Northern in which 45 schools voted.
