This is not Tgreat worlt of art nor a masterpiece of literature, for we have reached no such pinnacle of perfection. Within these pages we have tried to set forth some of the more interesting events of our four years of High School life. We sincerely hope that no one will talte offense at any of the sayings herein as they have not been written with any such intentions. Our parting wish is that our successors will continue the pre- cedent established of publishing an Oriole and may it be even better than this boolx of ours. :-: :-: :-: :-: 'r f ..x i , 1, . miie f Q f xrt A. VK HUTTH Hllenor hefore llonors ser-nas very fitting and appropriate at this 1-ritir-al part ot' our f-areer not heeause it brings forth Il ref-ollet-tion of the past but rather a real- ization of the future. Honor'to my estimation is a serupulous eonforniity to what is right, an unerrin,q' attribute to high moral worth or a produf-t of the higher motives of man. ln this respea-t we 1-an say that our insignia, llonor hr-fore Honors hringgs us a realization or desire for attain- ment in the future. What is the invariahle result of 'honorll l'll'UIll a moral standpoint we see the hroafleningg ot' one's eharaeter, an int-reased feeling ot' trust and dependent-y toward our fellow-men and a realization ot' the ht-tter virtues ot our assoeiates. Un this suhjeet the words ot' the old tire-ek philosopher are very fitting, Better deserve honoi and not get it, than to have it and not de- serve it. As we look on our attainnnents in the past, we the t'Iass of l92U feel justly proud. Hur Ht'l'llf'Yt'lIlt1llfS in the held ot' athletif-s, seholarship and endeavor are se-'-ontl to none. As the old proverlf says, Let the dead past hury the past, so we tm-n our attention to the eternal fntnrr----there to test whether the fellowship of our elasslnates, tearhers and trim-nds is the virtue ot' honor. To the tat-nlty, who helped us through our many and wearisome struggles, we must at last say, Adien. ln them, we see our ex- ample of Honor , and many are the regrets ot' our fellow-students that we must leave them now when they lnavr- really het-oxne a part of us, as it were, through our four ohseqions years ot' learning. We leave to them nothing hut a heartfelt f,fI'2lif'fllllIf'SS for their endea- vors hut with a eherished hope that they may 1-arry on their work in the old L, Il, S, to a sum-esst'1,1I enlrnination. At the elose ot' these four years, we look har-k with many mis- givings on our omnitarious past, hut on the other hand, we look toward a longevous future ot' ar-eornplif-shment with determination, with a mind made more perspif-aeious hy tour years of endeavor, with increased ability attained hy our working' togetherg and with a heart filled with hope and desire for af-hievement, we tat-e the future with the emhlern, 'tllonor hefore Honors,l' instilled in our heaifts through our pleasant experienf'e topfffthffli WAIJTEH B. During our high sehool rareer we have worked and played together. Now we have come to the parting of the ways. Are we sorry 7 Of eourse we are and yet we are eager to take our plat-es in the world about us. XYhether we go on to higher institutions of learning or not, the training we have ret-eived here will be invaluable to us and will help us to adjust ourselves to the positions we will be walled upon to till in life. XYe will have the advantage in rompetition with those who have not had the opportunities for edueation whit-h we have enjoyed, and no one will be responsible but our- selves if we do not gut-f-eed. XVe regret that so any of those who entered high sehool with us have seen fit to diseontinue their studies and hope that those who are now in sehool will not make sueh an unwise deeision. In the modern business world a good edueation is almost a ner-essity. During our r-ourse of study we have found out that sum-ess is worthless unless it ean be obtained honorably and af-eordingzly we have adopted as our motto the slogan Honor before Honors. Honor is always of the first im- portanee, and I trust that every member of the 1-lass will do his best to live up to this sentiment in whatever line of work he may enter. The problems of ret-onstrur-tion are not yt-t solved and there will be ample opportunity for ear-h one of us Tu render some serviee to the world. H.: all things point to a period of extreme youthfulness. That memorahle heginning was haek in the fall of 1916 when 98 rather timid yet hopeful l reshmen entered High Sc-hool. Some of us sat in Room 9 under the supervision of Miss Collins and some of us in Hoomiil under Miss Millerls watehful eye. The first few days of sehool were a regular nightmare to us. We were looked upon with niueh -.lisdain hy the Hall-knowingn sophomores, hut this did not onee daunt our eourageous spirit. 1Ve kept plugging on and working hard, as all heginners do, looking forward to the time when we would he known as Sophomores. We hegan our sophomore year with a ca-lass membership of T51 the re- .nainder of the original 98, sad to say, had grown tired of the daily routine of sehool work and had dropped out. This year went by more pleasantly and we felt that we were truly a part of the high sehool. As this was the time of the entranee of the Ynited States in the XVorld War. our f-lass showed its patriotie spirit in taking part in the Junior Red t'v-oss Hoeiety and in the sale of Thrift Stamps and Liherty Bonds. Our prin- eipal, Mr. t'. IG. ttritiith, resigned and went to Franee as a Y. ll. V. A. secretary and was sueeeeded hy Mr. T. ll. Valdwell. Une of our elass, XYilson Buek, stirred hy the spirit of war left our ranks the tirst semester and joined the ranks ofthe l'. S. Army and sailed for l ranee May 19, 1918. NYe were sorry tg lf L' . ' l ,sc him hut glad that we eould say that our elass had a representative in the great eonlliet. Hur Junior year proved more eventful. We entered with a elass of 58 who were more enthusiastie than ever hefore and were looking forward to the last and In-st year of high sehool. XVe In-gan the soeial season hy entertaining the Sophomores at a mas- fpterade darn'--. Shortly alter this we were the guests ol' the l resh1nen at Sl daneing party. Iiy giving a nurnher ot' lmenetit shows, danees and hox soeials, we finally 'll lflltfl we had enough eurreney to hanquet the Seniors. This was given 'l 1 Hfl2IA', -lune ltl, at the Stearns llotel and under the skillful management ol' Winona Laidlaw and her assistants, proved a real Nlll't'G'SS. This ended the Nl 'l7l1 4-vents ol' olll' -lunior year, Un-nl: And now we have reaehed that longed tor stage ot' being Seniors. NYL- eau now look baek and smile at all the mishaps ol' those other years. We feel that this, our last year, has surpassed all others in every line ol' high sr-hool aetivity. NYe have figured prominently in athleties, in oratory and dramaties. Xvilson Buek, returning' from lfranee was unable to eontinue in our elass but Bert Shangle, another ex-serviee man, joined our elass making' our num ber an even 541. About the tirst thing' done was elel-tion ot' 1-lass ollieers and the Oriole Statf. Miss Miller had been named Senior advisor and under her supervision our last year was a most eventful one. We opened up the soeial events with a beaeh supper for Seniors exelusively. XYe were next enter- tained by the Juniors with a danee. ln November we gave a tlanee for the Sophomores. But the big event ot' the first semester was a t'ln-istlnas Banquet at the Domestie St-ienee Rooms for the Seniors and the lfaenlty. After the banquet we all returned to the High Sehool where we entertained the Juniors with a dan:-e. And now as we look forward to the day ot' t'ommeneement when we shall go out into the world. not as a elass, but as individuals, we will ref-all the tour years of Sigh Sehool as the best and happiest years ol' our lite. and some time in the future we may all gather togetlier again and diseuss the good old by- gone days and happy events whieh are here enumerated with the pages of this t'Our Book. SPIRIT OF 1920. Spirit- What does it mean? lt means the lite in the soul-the spirit of sf-hool life not only means the attitude one takes in his studies but more so in the af-tivities of the sehool-athleties, soeial events and organization. I believe it to be a fairy-spirit that entered into the students of the li. H. this year. Not only the fat-ulty hut the 'lreslnnen and all eame to the parties. More students have been t'lI?llIt.fCfl from elumsy speeimens ol' human- ity into fairy-like ereatures, so bright and airy. Right here, the li. H. S. wishes to thank the far-ulty, who aeted as ehaperons at the sehool parties. The Jazz Ur:-liestra, whit-h has reeently been organized, will be l.ei't for the dances ot' '21. The Athlgfipg, Debates and Literary Sonic-ty have been better this year than ever beifore. Thatiwhieh put the ginger into the students was the series of sermons on High School Spirit, by Rev. H. H. Hawley. A large part of the year's sueeess is due to our Prineipal, who took so much interest in the pupils' soeial spirit. Unlnlc Class prophecy PON my arrival in Ludington in IDZH from the Polar regions I went to the Stearns llotel which was the same as years ago except that Russell Nordholt was now clerk. As I stepped up to the desk two maids rushed forward to take my bag. These I recognized as Lois and Mar- jorie Thompson-each of whom I tipped a half-dollar for old time's sake. NVhile waiting tor dinner I picked up the evening edition of the Daily News and as formerly my gaze tirst fell on the Lyric ad. The play was the t'Soul Mai-ket +the scenario for which had been written by Mlle. Aimee Le Yeaux featuring Lionel Mann. Much to my surprise at dinner I inet Alina Hansen who invited me to go to the show with her. There we saw flashed upon the screen Lionel Mann in a dress suit, who deserted the sweet, confid- ing country lassie, played by Miss Kittie Herrick and fell a victim to the sinu- ous villainess, Thelma Thaxton, who was the successor to Theda Bara. The next day I called upon Mrs. Rev. Swanson, formerly Agnes Hansen. I asked her what had become of Bee Beandreau. 'WYe are very proud of her in this town, she replied. She has a wonderful art studio in New York. Her portrait ot the Hon. Mrs. Breckenbridge, nee Dutch Laidlaw, won first prize at the Art Exhibition at New York last year. You remember Beatrice's chum, Dorothy Grant? She and Hee fell in love with the same man, Roy Chil- berg, and she t'elt so bad because he married Helen Houk that she became a nun. He is a prosperous Scottville Milkman. Now tell me about Yiola Hawley. She is a social service worker in t'hi4-ago. Just last week she brought the rich tenement owner, lflvald Carlson, to trial before Judge Theodore John- son. Where is Wccdie Yorce Y She is now Marquise de Maul-icnncs who is about to get a divorce on the grounds that her husband has fallen madly in love with an American chorus girl, Agnes Blacl, arcn, who is know as the 'llonnie Scotch Lassief Humor has it that Wccdic wants to marry the famous poet, Gilbert Bradshaw, So Hilbert became a lone'-haired poet. He used to like Marian Hoxie pretty well. XYherc is she fu lfll-ual: She is matron ot' the Stine Insane .Xsylum at Kalamazoo and all the in- mates are crazy about her. Muriel Arft is a nurse there and is very interested in Alva Houk, the attending physieianf' Do you renlember our Senior class president, NValter l1lrikson? I asked. VVl1y yes, XYalter is now ellief-of-poliee. Just the other day he arrested Carla Larsen, a Pierre-Arrow agent, for speeding while demonstrating a ear to Ervon Kistler, ll wealthy ln'iek-mason. By the way, did you hear what the head of the Railroad Brotherhood said the other day '? No, who is he? Bert Shangle who elaimed tliat the railroad men won only part of the fight when the government took over the railroads permanently. He wants half of the taxes now. Ilifz power is very great and he is much feared by all except his wife, Mable Larfen. She made him discharge his pretty, private secretary, Agnes Petersen, and engage tlnarles Stewart to take her place. VVhat is Rae Tanner doing? She married a famous preacher. They say she writes his sermon: but that is unfair to him. And Blanche Spaulding? She became a missionary to Africa. Her friend, Laura Pederson, is a Y. VV. C. A. worker and is doing uplift work in Custer. This is all very interesting, where are the rest? Estella Skoog is a soprano with the Metropolitan Opera Company. Some time ago she brought suit against the coznpany and engaged Hazel Dahringer as her lawyer. Ida Olsen is the head of an Exclusive girls' academy in Valborg Peterson has an interest. Gladys Fitch is teaching the in Victory. Did you know that Lydia Borg and Dorothy Dy in an exclusive Fifth Avenue shop? Their designer is Harold Kieth is happily married and lives in California. Estella, Mildred Soneral are working in the government offices in W Why, here come: a parade. Who is that at the head of Ida Kistler, who is to be our next mayor. She defeated sen, the Socialist candidate by a very large majority her campaign manager, Alberta Daye. 4, Really, I must be leaving although this is so but I have to catch the evening train to Chicago to with my caterer, Onabelle Rumberger for the great Juryfl i Usual: Class -l. -1 We have decided for reaniination So we went to the doctor for examination He told ns we had small room for hope. When L. H. first greeted us we were a hundred strong NVe looked as Freshies always look-a green and Inotely throng. As freshies should, throughout the year we always tried to see How unobserved, invisible and quiet we could be. Then one fine day in June they sent us hoine with, HDonlt forget To c-all again next year for you can learn a few things yetfl We ealled, eleeted officers and started out once inore. We did one thing how ever, that we hadn't done before, The ehanipionship for basketball was won by Sophomore boys XVe gave a couple ot parties, ended then our yearly joys. And now as Juniors we return with rnany things to do Athletics and society deniand some pushing through. This year again at basketball, we've proved that we excel Our boys have gained the ehanipionship, the girl 's teani did as well. To prove that we were thankful for the honors they had won We tendered thein a banquet and we had a lot of fun. That we inight give a banquet to the Seniors 'lore they go XYe staged a play The Wishing Ring to raise the needed dough. l hope now that you'll pardon ine if I philosophize lt isn't that I know so nnufh or want to seein so wise, liut here's the thing l've notieed as l've played niy little ganie That the finest thing that you ran earn is just an honored name. lt means that when youlve won your iight, you've won it fair and squ lt means that folks r-in trust you any time and anywhere. ln study or in play, in any worthwhile thing you do lt should be worth your while to try to niake folks proud ot you. These are the things we have at-hieved but it is always true The greater and the bigger things are just ahead of you No matter what we have at-hieved those things untought, unwon Are greater tar than anything that we'll have ever done. --C. Erik- son, Roseoe C. Fiteh and tf. Russell llolmes were ehosen to represent the sehool. The question for the debate this year was a very important one to all good Americans, Resolved that the Vongress of the Vnited States should adopt some system ot universal military training for all able bodied male eitizens between the ages of 18 and 25. Taking the affirmative side the loeal team met the Manistee team in the tfongregational ehureli on the evening of January ninth. The debate was won by the visitors with a unanimous vote of the three judges, although the lot-al team had prepared a strong ease. Two weeks later the team aeeepted Reed t'ity's invitation to debate there, where after a hard tight it won the attirmative side. The next and last debate for Ludington was held at Ludington with the Freemont team, whieh upheld the affirmative. This debate went to Freemont by a two to one vote of the judges. There has been in the past a seeming disregard ot the importanee of sueh work at L. H. S. and it is to be hoped that this start will hasten the day when literary honors will eount tor as mueh and will eommand the same interest as athleties in our sehool. AURORA LITERARY SOCIETY The Aurora Literary Soeiety of the lqudington High School organized with the following ottieers tor the year 1919-1920: President - - Harold Benson Vive-President Marian Hoxie Secretary Lloyd Fortune Treasurer Roseoe C. Fiteh ffritif' - - - Miss Grace Chapel Vnder the leadership and supervision ot' Miss tlraee Uhapel and with the aid and eo-operation ot Principal ll. ll. Hawley, several interesting pro- grams and many parties were given by the soeiety. With a membership ot over seventy-tive, the liiterary Soeiety assumed the sponsorship and responsibility tor the visiting debating teams from Manistee and ldreemont, diseharging this duty with great sneeess. tm Hallowe'en night a mastluerade and danee was given at the Guild Hall with all the members in attendanee and enjoying themselves to the ut- most. Miss t'hapel staged an appropriate dramatization as the tirst number on the program. This was tollowed by dancing and appetizing refreshments. Although the sessions were not as regular or as many as in previous years due to the many other soeial aetivities ot the sehool, the members all feel that they have derived mueh value 'from the organization in learning as well as enjoyment. , URIDUE Society News INTER-CLASS PARTIES U1'YHllL'l- U1-llll111bl'-5HIlllUllllbl'l' pglriy, N',Wi'l1ll .'l' 3-51-1lilrv'-Sulvlnmnulw party.
