Nt THE GLEAM in the interests of the organization and for our own goodf, as we heard only too often. But we soon found that the stern attitude could be laid aside for the poor, puzzled, often discouraged young beginner, and we could open our hearts without reservations and receive understanding, helpful interest and, at times, motherly tenderness when our troubles were real enough to merit her genuine sympathy. Wle grew to depend upon her loyal protection from unjust criticism and misplaced blame. We were her charges and she would defend us. Ever ready to administer deserved punishment, she rutlled her feathers angrily at a threat- ened attack on one of her chicks, from what she considered an alien hand. A heart.-to-heart talk with our understanding friend and guide could always restore our confidence and interest-send us back to face ditlicult problems with new viewpoints, courage and a renewed love for our chosen work. We had a mission, a precious charge and we would give our best! . Our lives have been enriched indeed, by the short but full years of con- tact- with her splendid spirit, a.nd if our high hopes come true and we have anything to give to our profession that will aid in the long struggle with man- kind's ills, and cast glory on our hospital, Miss Smithson must surely bask in the reflected glow, as whatever we are now, in our better moments, whatever we may become in the future, we owe to her teaching, her example and her inspiration.
