The j joyous greetings of the old girls made me homesick at iirst- but they h are all so lovely that I do not feel like that any more. - September 14-I have been so busy with lectures and sight- seeing that I have not had time to keep my diary but now I must mention the Faculty reception. How we enjoyed that I I just know I am going to like everybody here. Today Miss Ellen took us- to Mount Vernon. lVhat a trip! Sunset over the Potomac! Supper on the boat! Songs on deck! It was perfect. I September 20-Our Big Sisters are just the best ever. VVe all had the best time at the picnic at Rock Creek Park. Some of them must have a 'fdragv with the weathei-man,'for it was a gorgeous moonlight night. A fire, games, eats, songs Hlld a ride along the silver Potomac-they surely knew what we would like. ' Then follows a period of uneventful weeks, filled most-ly with study and like excitement-then the entry- October 28-At last we are organized. VVe have begun our career as a class. We certainly showed our wfsdom when we chose our oflieers. Ruth Maguire can preside over even our obst1'eperous gang. Katherine Kingsley will be an able assistant.. Cecil Morris makes a good scribe and we'd trust Helen Wyatt with almost anything-at least the class money. ' Note-we are awfully sorry but we have had to elect. a new vice-president because Miss Kingsley' s health would not permit her to stay any longer. How- ever, we will choose another Elllfl hope that Kathryn will be able to return in February. Then followed another quiet. spell during which the chief anxiety' was the approaching bazaar-but before that finally arrived, one event occurred on November 8-Again the Seniors displayed their cleverness. This time it was the Hallowe'en Party which they ga.ve to the Juniors and us. We had just the best time. Weill have to go some at the George Washington Banquet. l18l THE, GLEAM November 27-Thanksgiving! Not so bad. ' December 7-This sure ought. to be put in red letters. Of all the Wo1'lc! However, We feel that We did make it go over. We do not Want to boast or any- thing like that but one lady was heard to say 4'W7hy is it. that the Freshmen always have the most attractive booth 3 I am not going to keep up this diary any longer. lVhat with Christmas Cjoyous thoughtj exams Qditto??j and the George Washiiigtoii Banquet, Illl never get time to Write more in it. THE GLEAM In Retrospect EAR Betty : What a pleasant surprise it was to receive your letter. It does not seem possible that almost three years have passed since you 'C , left Rust Hall. If I remember correctly you were here only one D month. Of course you were here long enough to witness some of the most important events of our Freshman year. There was so much excitement that first week a.nd so many things happening that we hardi y knew what we were doing. Most of our time seemed to be taken. up getting acquainted with rooln-mates, unpacking trunks, attending parties, house- meetings and chapel. The- happenings that first week seem to be more prom- inent in my mind than so-me of tl1e things which have happened since then, but because you have inquired abontthe egents of the three years I will endeavor to give you just a brief history. Soon after you left, our class was organized and Eva M ae Murray became our president. It did not take us long to lea.rn that the upper classes loved their Rust Hall and soon we were singing, 'fllear liust Qllall, Class of ,230 loves you 5 Before you left there had been talk of Senior Day, but we really lived to see it come to pass. At 4 A.M. one morning we were awakened and told to dress quickly and to go to the basement. There were several Pennsylvania girls in our class but not enough to- f'dare not go. We were forced to hike two miles, undergo severe physical exercises a.nd return to school before breakfast. The result was that Miss Stilwell had to keep late hours nursing those who were ill. The next big event of the year was Christmas vacation. After vacation, examinations came and alarm clocks were our necessity. lt was at this time that the Freshmen nurses received their new caps and bibs. You certainly missed a lot of fun by not being present- at the George Wasli- ington Banquet. You remember that the Freshmen had charge of it. We worked fa.r, fa.r into the night making programs, menus, etc., but we were well repaid, for it was a wonderful success according to reports. I must. not go into detail about Commencement for since we were only Freshmen we did not have much showing but with the coming of our Junior year we began to feel a new responsibility. We became 'tliig Sisters, we enter- 'C i tained the Seniors, and we took our little sisters to the park. Fm sure you would like the song which Doris composed, so I am going to copy it here for you. It expresses the feeling and interest that we had come to have for Rust Hall. , I 39 J THE GLEAM '4Dear old Rust Hall, Here as we learn to live Friends are dearer to our hearts And ever duty calls To our life's work Service and love combined. Always we' ll look up And always we'll look up lVe're the .lunior Class of '29. Last fall we returned to Rust Hall with a new determination to make our Senior year the best year of our training. We elected Tillie N eikirk as our president and Miss Roberts for our Advisor to take the place of Miss Sheppard who had left. us to go back to Yale for another year. You remember Miss Roberts, don't you? Anyway you had some her well planned meals while you were in Sibley Hospital. Everyone thinks that we are lucky to have her and we agree with them. lVe found that even though we were Seniors we could not play 1l11lGSS we worked. First there was the Senior party. You remember how everyone likes pie at Rust Hall. You should have seen eyes open when we served pumpkin pie a. la mode for refreshments! Everyone liked it so much that we could not resist serving pie at the Bazaar supper. Betty, I just canit make myself believe that soon we will leave Rust Hall. Gur Baccalaureate service was very impressive' yesterday and we are hoping that tonight, and tomorrow night wifl be just as successful. 'I do wish you could be here tonight because it is Class Night and tomorrow night is Commencement. Of course we do not like to think of leaving Rust Hall because we have come to love her and the ideals for which she stands. We feel that our lives have become deepened through our contact with the school and those who have so patiently instructed and guided us. Even though we desire to 1'61T1H.l11 longer a much greater call comes to us to go forth to. serve the Master by caring for the poor and afflicted, building up the ideals of broken homes, bringing the life of Jesus Christ to the little children and giving both physical and spiritual help to those who stand in need. I shall be glad to hear from you. Sincerely yours, -BROWN CULPW, '30. E401 THE GLEAM Ten Years Hence 41-,- --. EXV York had become rather boresome and I wondered as I walked down Fifth Avenue on the Twentieth of May in 1940 how I could 1 leave everything for a while. If I could just see some of my class- mates, it would be such a relief I I Just then someone exclaimed, F or goodness sakes, what are you doing here 3 . It was Helen Haner and the .rejoicing was tremendous. Of c course we got together for a chat. She was an aviatrix at Lindbergh Field in New York and was quite noted for her a.ir stunts. I explained that I Iiad been Qeft a milion a.11d a half by a former patient. and was growing tired of doing nothing. That explains how we started on our air trip around the world. We left New York and followed the coast line to Atlantic City where we stopped for a few da.ys. Imagine our surprise upon seeing Martha Camovitch and Theresa Evans practising on the beach with the Ziegfeld Follies Chorus. They were making quite a hit with their new show. As we made our final hop from there, we passed a balloon floating in mid- air. I examined it with a telescope a.nd saw a sleeping girl. We went closer and saw Beth Duchon with a magazine in each hand. We landed in London and met Edith Fogg who was doing Social Service work. She was making good because Fogg belongs to Iiondon. Next we went to Pa.ris and met. Emma Oberdorf in a restaurant, talking, laughing and eating as :much as ever. We left for Barcelona. and there met J ack Clukey who was on a yachting cruise with a party given by Ira. Yes, she was married to Ken but it was impossible for him to leave his work for the trip. Jack was having the time of her life as usual. She, of course, told us about Martha Lindsey who was now a missionary teaching a singing class in Southern Africa. Becky VVitter, she said, was painting a huge picture of the Alps. We then crossed the continent to China to see Jerry Stackhouse who was a medical missionary in Hong Kong. Our next stop after this was the Philip- pines because we knew that Polly would be glad to see us. She was the same Polly even if her name was not La.Mon any more. She liked the Philippines and as long as J ack was stationed there she was quite contented. Ivhen we landed in San Francisco we went to see '4'I'ill Neikirk and Nick. Till', had been married for nine years and was still in love. She told us to go to see Dizzie Mclleod in Arizona. where- she was nurse in a mining camp doing more entertaining than nursing, but instead of that we went straight to the A E411 THE GLEAM Utah Indian Reservation where Hickie Schoppert was teaching hygiene to the children. ' When we landed in Chicago we looked up Mumps. She invited us in to see her in her new position as nurse in a training school for boys. She to-ld us that she had seen Virginia Allen several times. Virginia was following her ca.reer of nursing at the University of Illinois. We crossed the Great Lakes to Canada. At Toronto we saw a large new hotel which we were told was managed by a woman from the United States. Cnr curiosity led us to investigate and we were surprised to find the woman to be our own Kathryn Scott. As we landed in the States once more, we found that we were so near Syra.cuse that we would have to see Polly Collins. We found her picking dai- sies in her fathe-ris back yard. We next stopped in Philadelphia and were much pleased to read in the bright lights Geraldine Logan, Famous Contraltof' The theater was crowded as it. was her tinal week of a fifty-two week contract. Cn our way to our hotel we were almost run over by a man and his wife in a 1929 Packard roadster. It was none other than Jane Annan and Freddie-just the same a.lthough the car showed the hard service of ten years. The next morning being Sunday, we attended the nearest. church. We sat behind an attractive person who listened very attentively to the sermon. YVhen church was over and 'l was able to sec her face, it was Edna Heckinan. YVe were in her husband's church. ' YVe left XVashington in the afternoon and as we circled over St. Eliza- beth' s ready for our la.nding, we noticed some one pushing a. twin baby carriage around. As we dropped nearer, we could see that it was Phyllis Harner who we had heard was happilly married and living in Congress Heights near her husband' s work. We visited Frances Sheetz immediately. She was doing research and had become very famous because of her discovery of measle anti-toxin. She told us that Hazel Shutters was living in Maryland where she and her husband had a large fishery. She also told us that she had been to see the new Walkersville hospital founded by Hazel Feaster. YVe visited Sibley and were surprised to tind Mary Bange night super- visor. Marjorie King a.nd Tvola. Hart, we learned, were popular specials in Sibley. Virginia. Turner ha.d just left for Kentucky where she was assisting in a clinic to remove tonsils. .We read in the paper that Gertrude Gift was marrying her third husband as soon as she received her divorce papers. Having seen most of the world and spent all our money, we put our names on register and started doing special duty the next day. I 421 --EVA MAE MURRAY., THE GLEAM By the Light of the Fire i -- ,T was a cold, dark, dreary night, and I felt much diseontented and K5 lonesome even though I was sitting in a large arm chair in front of , an open fire where everything was cozy and comfortable. Engle ' ' l Settlement, in Fairmont, VVest'Virginia, is my home for the present 5 l and although it is neat a11d attractive I do get lonesome and blue at times. If I could but see the faces of the girls in the class of '30 for if l a few minutes it would help to make things more pleasant. The ' letters I used to get have ceased to arrive and the friendships seem to be growing farther and farther apart as tl1e days wear around more swiftly. But look! Can I believe my eyes? I am sure I see faces in the flames! There is Frances Calkins. She is talking from the pulpit of a large church which is over-crowded with people. C, yes-il recall, just ten years ago we sent Frances to Porto Rico and to this very day she is there preaching the Christian religion to the needy people. How good to see her face once more! Blackness comes upon the flames. Suddenly before my eyes a familiar door opens which displays the third floor of Iiust Hall. A voice is heard saying, '4Good night, girls. It is Luella Didget who has taken the position of Dean of Rust Hall. ,lt is a very high and honorable position and Luella is more than i . ' N deserving of it. - The face of a familiar friend has come upon the scene. It is Margaret Thomas, but not as we knew her for she has increased in weight until we would hardly recognize her. il. do not see a kiiidergarten room but rather a long room lined with shelves upon which are rows and rows of bottles. There is a bit of writing on each bottle which says, Increase your weight by drinking one bottle. Margaret has invented a medicine which builds up the tired, worn frame. She received her vast knowledge for this art in Rust Hall Kindergarten where she mixed the oils for the children. A tall sedate lady looms up in the very highest and brightest flame. At once I hear singing, then I behold thousands of people gathered to hear the wonderful artist. Doris Rising has found her place in Grand Opera. work. Who can this second lady be in the picture? The face is growing clea.rer. It is Verna Cook and with her are two little children, a little curly-headed boy and a fairy-like little girl who are wanting everything they see in the windows of the large stores on G Street. Verna has become! a little housewife. Imagine that! At this time there appears another familiar face. Mildred Cheever is on her way to church. But what is she to do there? Look! She is director of I43j . THE GLEAM Hamline cho-ir, and now she is able to display some of that musical ability be- fore the eyes of the appreciative public. T see a little kitchen in the Haines, four poorly clad little girls a.re seated on the bare floor of a little dark cellar room. A dignified la.dy is standing at the stove. It is Helen Phillips still working for the Associated Charities. She is trying to teach a mother to cook cereal for t.he starving family. That picture has so soon vanished, but another one comes before me ac- companied by words sailing out in all directions. HI am the advertising man- ager of the New York Life Insurance Company, and have come to you for your ad. Sure as I am living that is Mildred Sweet. The New York Life Insur- ance Co. having heard of her wonderful success in securing ads for the GTJEABT, has employed her as their Advertising Manager. Wlia.t can that great building be and who is seated at the desk? That must be a library and there is Catherine Frey seated with about. fifteen books before her. She is reading with great interest. The Rust Hall Faculty has employed her to censor all the books as soon as they leave tl1e press to see whether or not it is worth the valuable time of the incoming students to acquire the knowledge the new books afford. - Behold, T see Phil Boccardo standing at the door of the Italian Mission at Syracuse, New York. Before her are a group of boys and girls waiting for the clock to strike seven in order tha.t they may get in to hear Phil tell stories for them. Phil is now superintendent of t.hat Mission. A wide door opens before me and a host of boys and girls are trying eagerly to learn to read and write. Brown Culp seems to be the teacher of these Primary grades in the famous Mitchell School. The love for this school has grown so deep within her that she had to leave her Kindergarten and take up work with her home and friends. '4Her hair' like ebony glistens, her eyes are like twin stars. If it isn7t Gertrude Starr, the third Hoor pal to everyone. I see no church, no mission or settlement, but before me stands the dearest little bungalow with old fashioned shutters at the windows. To my great surprise, Gertrude is standing in the doorway. She is the mistress of this little abode-. The fire is going out and the faces have gone from before me. It is getting late in the night, but it has been areal treat to gaze once more into the faces of the members of the class of ' 30 if only in the flames of a great Open Fire. Q -ALTA Ion. i441 THE GLEAM Class Gifts HE Senior Class of 1930, being by nature very generous is leaving a graduation present for each of its members. . To Virginia Allen we give a make-up box which should remind her of the many pleasant hours spent in class during her Freshman year. Jane Annan is the proud possessor of a new Packard. VVe hope she will enjoy her rides in this car as much as we know she has enjoyed those in a certain other car. We know Mary Bange would like a private telephone so we are having one in- stalled in her room so she can talk to her numerous boy-friends in privacy. To Luella Didget we give this rolling pin in order that she may keep Enoch straight and obedient. To Martha- Camovitch we give a niee ear of corn. It should 1'emind her of the many pleasant evenings spent near a certain young doctor. VVe think a cedar chest would be a very good present for Pauline Collins. She can use it not only as a hope chest, but also as a box in which to collect and keep her thoughts. VVe found this handsome young man looking for a girl-friend down on F street, sol we are giving him to Jack', Clukey. Wle hope she will be true to him even during her vacation. This jar of Petrolagar we a1'e giving to Theresa. 'Evans for her to distribute among the patients on the First Annex. To take the place of the Odd Fellows ring we give Verna Cook this diamond. To Beth Duehon we give this 12-inch ruler in order that she may be sure that every- thing she does may be according to rule. A sled was the best substitute we could iind in looking for a Bob for Gertrude Starr. Edith Fogg can learn about the habits of a rabbit from this bunny. She can also have the egg which 'goes with it. Gertrude Gift will, we know, enjoy a pie. We guarantee it to be good and it should bring back pleasant memories to Pie Faeef' This heart may bring back happy recollections of a certain night last February to Helen Haner. Phyllis Hafner can add this, spoon to her collection of silverware. To Catherine Frey we give this orange to help her out with her diet. Tvola Hart should have had this little Ford about six months ago, but it is better late than never. Maybe Mae will be sick again and she can use it to go to visit him when she gets off duty late. To Edna Heckman we give: this cake of soap, not because she needs the soap but she should always keep her P. G. with her. Marjorie King will appreciate these nickels which will save her the trouble of hunting for change the next time she wants to call the boy-friend. . Here is a book of poems and jokes for Alta. Ice. They are a collection of her own works of art. This horn may not sound like the one Polly LaMon would like to hear, but she may hear him better if she gives him this one. VVe do not know if Martha Lindsey can read this book in German or not but maybe she can get help from a certain young man. The owl is a wise old bird, so weare giving one to Jerry Logan who is also quite wise. VVe are giving this black handkerchief to Helen Phillips. lt is the only thing she needs to complete her Deaconess garb. To 'fDizzy McLeod we give this pane of glass. idle hope she is careful and does not harm her Payne. . To Mildred Sweet we give this pillow in o1'der that she may sleep more comfortably in classes next year at American University. V We all know how much Eleanor Mumford loved Children's so here is a dear little baby for her. Eva Mae Murray does not eat pickles but perhaps she can give it away, so we will give her one. n To Mildred Cheever we give this tablet engraved with these words: Do not close the Hymnals until the Amen has been sung. She may will it to Crary Chapel if she so desires. Tillie Neikirk is very fond of music so We will give her this piece entitled, I'll Get By. l45l THE GLEAM A piece of candy may help Emma Oberdorf's appetite, if not we will give her SOIUB- thing more to eat. To our innocent Brown Culp we present this volume of essays on Phases of Modern Life. Hickey Schoppert is not hungry but this little bottle may come in handy, at least it will save Wear and tear on the thumb. Katherine Scott is quite famous for l1er remark, f'Girls, we have to wrap cotton, so we will give her a roll of cotton already wrapped. Hazel Shutters, bashful child that she is, blushes too readily so we are giving her this mask to hide her blushes. To Philomena Boccardo we give this megaphone to keep her from straining her delicate vocal cords. Frances Sheetz will enjoy this onion sandwich if she does not have a date. Tiny, we advise you to stay in tonight. ' Mary Schwenk, who has lost so much sleep by overworking, will be able to get a good night's rest on this bed. Perhaps she can catch up on all she has missed while in the op- erating-room. VVe have herc a, box Smithis cough drops for Doris Rising, they are guaranteed to soothe. To Margaret Thomas we give this alarm clock to help her get to Chapel on time. To Virginia Turner we will give a bottle of tonicg if taken religiously it is guaranteed to make her gain at least five pounds a week. Rebecca Wittei' needs something to help her manage her children, we will give her a whip and trust that she will 11ot overwork it. To Hazel Feaster a package of dates in case her men friends should give out. Geraldine Stackhouse-to you we give a box of Aspirin tablets hoping they will relieve the headache which you must have acquired from selecting all these gifts. This date book will be handy for Frances Calkins. It may help her to avoid mixing her numerous dates. If anyone is dissatisfied with her gift we will have an exchange bureau where gifts may be exchanged or returned. l-161 THE GLEAM Last Will and Testament E, the Senior Class of 1930 of the I,.W.H.N.T.S. and Sibley Memo- Q rial Hospital of the city of Wasliiiigtoii in the District of Columbia, La U. Hllliss Bessie Smithson, say Q53 we with one accord. All of these, and more, more than We can put , into words, although our hearts appreciate it to the fullest degree. f lVhere shall we begin in an attempt to tell all that she has meant, I and will ever mean to us? Naturally, at first her exalted position, in our scale of values, awed us, made ns think there could be nothing but punishments handed down to us from such lofty heights.. Discipline and restrictions there were in plenty, l49l Nt THE GLEAM in the interests of the organization and for our own goodf, as we heard only too often. But we soon found that the stern attitude could be laid aside for the poor, puzzled, often discouraged young beginner, and we could open our hearts without reservations and receive understanding, helpful interest and, at times, motherly tenderness when our troubles were real enough to merit her genuine sympathy. Wle grew to depend upon her loyal protection from unjust criticism and misplaced blame. We were her charges and she would defend us. Ever ready to administer deserved punishment, she rutlled her feathers angrily at a threat- ened attack on one of her chicks, from what she considered an alien hand. A heart.-to-heart talk with our understanding friend and guide could always restore our confidence and interest-send us back to face ditlicult problems with new viewpoints, courage and a renewed love for our chosen work. We had a mission, a precious charge and we would give our best! . Our lives have been enriched indeed, by the short but full years of con- tact- with her splendid spirit, a.nd if our high hopes come true and we have anything to give to our profession that will aid in the long struggle with man- kind's ills, and cast glory on our hospital, Miss Smithson must surely bask in the reflected glow, as whatever we are now, in our better moments, whatever we may become in the future, we owe to her teaching, her example and her inspiration. E671 r S. R. E, CHORUS THE GLEAM Rust Hall Gospel Teams N the Fall of 1929 a new epoch in the life of Rust Hall was founded. Miss Mary E. Gordon originated this plan when she suggested that Gospel 'Teams be formed in connection with the Bible-Student and as aaresult three Gospel Teams were organized. Since that time the three groups have done some excellent work under the capable supervision of Miss Marion Spohn, Miss Marialyce Nichols and Miss Louise Taylor, the leaders of their re- spective te-anis. Both the leaders and the members of these teams worked hard cf W9 Chorus. This suggestion met: with a hearty approval of the girls 5 P -LJ and faithful in order to give the finest possible service. lt has been the endeavor of the Gospel Teams to set new standards for devotional meetingsg to present to youth a new vision and to create in the hearts of those with whem they came in contact a desire for comradeship with the Living Christ. Various types of services were given to further this idea. Through pageantry and readings new visions have been revealedg through ser- mons new courage has been giveng through drama the right way of life has been portrayed. In each type of service which has been given the members of the Gospel Teams have otlered of their best. As a result of such giving their dreams of service have niaterializedg their hopes and dreams have been fulfilled with the coming of the Gospel Teams as a peimanent factor in the devotional life of Rust Hall. l69l NURSES' GLEE CLUB VER DRED B.
