Academic Achievements Recognized (left) Sophomore Sara Babcock spends time working in the library as she strives to maintain the grades needed to earn an Academic Let- ter worn M Rebec cd Frazon and Lee Ann Videen ledve school, but not their schoolwork as they head for home Academic Letter Winners 29 The Academic Letter Winners received a scroll “L which was the same size as the athletic letter, but in a different type style. However, many winners chose to display both styles of the awards on their letter jackets. In order to receive an Academic Letter, each student had to maintain a place on the regular Honor Roll for three consecutive quarter grading periods After receiving the initial letter, each demonstration of three consecutive quar- ters of academic achievement entitled the student to receive a small gold lamp which could be attached to his or her letter This emblem was symbol- ic of the lamp of wisdom. N.H.S. Inducts 12 12 new National Honor Society members were chosen on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, character, and service by a pan- el of teochers The new and old members were honored at a banquet attended by parents and faculty members on November 12 After the meal m the cafeteria, everyone moved to the elementary gym where Mr Marty Messor served as the Master of Cere- monies The keynote speaker was Dr Steven Kirk horn During the year, all members had to perform a community service Many chose to be schedulers during the fall Parent Teaeher Conferences The group project involved or- ganizing a December “Food Share Week The food was used to stock the Polk County Food Shelves Advisor Barb Petersen and the officers organized the project (Below) Senior Kelly Borup receives her certifi cate from Advisor Barb Petersen (Right) Dr Krkhorn serves as the Guest Speaker at the banquet He spoke of his Alas- kan experiences and the need to continue the search for knowledge (Far right) Eric Dueholm lights his candle from the representative candles and becomes an N H S member Secretary Gwen Christiansen gives her speech on the Character' demanded of all N H.S members Row 1 Jennifer Schauls. Drama Club Is Deadly Earnest On Friday. May 13 the Drama Club presented its version of the 3-Act comedy Deadly Earnest. by playwright Donald Payton The cast and crew began practicing near the beginning of April The play was under the joint direction of Mrs Aleta Anderson and Miss Kristen Kurschner It was primarily con- cerned with a man. who due to a strange set of circumstances, be- gan to act crazily whenever he heard the name Earnest One of the problems which the cast faced was m the acquiring of suitable props This year, for the first time, the crew was able to provide par- tial backdrops, which according to Mrs Anderson helped to give the right illusion When asked how she thought the play had turned out. junior Gwen Christiansen comment- ed “I thought it went really good Towards the end of rehearsals it got kmd of scary, because some of the people didn't know all of their Ernestine (Gwen Christiansen) gives Henry (Jay Gilhoi) what he believes to be a glass of parts, but. it all worked out m the poisoned milk during Act II end ” Mrs Lynn Kennedy shows senior John Clifton how to correctly apply his stage make-up before the performance Gwen Christiansen.
