xncnfT X Tlb J vtfrcrf JWft Uk Changing Seasons The Staff of the Horseshoe has chosen Changing Seasons as the theme of this year's yearbook. We will take you through the everchanging seasons of a school year at LHS. The school year begins with the fall and its activities of Football. Volleyball, and the freshness of a new year. We move on to winter with its snow and school closings. Then comes spring with From and Graduation plannings. Then a long awaited summer vacation comes once again, ending the Changing Seasons' pattern of the 1983-H4 school year. 1 emor 6 Jeffrey Berg Kevin Baldwin are Jack Hold! J4igli JeaclierS Miss Sondegaard Mr. Clifton Mrs. Thill Clockwise From Upper Left: Mr. Miller covers global affairs as a History and Economics teacher. He is also the advisor for the Stamp Club and the Junior class. Mrs. Petersen keeps busy as Cloverleaf, Graduation, and National Honor Society advisor. She's the Forensics coach and teaches English. Mr. Goulet, football coach, L-Club advisor, and Weight-lifting Coordinator, teaches Social Studies. Mrs. Anderson is the Learning Disabilities teacher and assistant volleyball coach 'round the clock. Mrs. Lake helps those studying French with their correspondence course and takes care of the T.V. behind the screen. Our librarian, Pep Club advisor and year- book advisor is Miss Nelson. She's the Senior class advisor, too. 16 Clockwise From Upper Left: Directing the band, and advising the pom pon and cheerleading squads is what keeps Mrs. Miller in tune. Mr. Dolny makes a great picture as the Art teacher, boys' basketball and golf coach, and advisor for the Seniors. Miss Brom has a good return on teaching Phy. Ed., advising the Junior class, and coaching volleyball and girls' track. Teaching Phy. Ed. is also Mr. Rebrovich's bag, and he is a Sophomore class advisor. Mr. Nygren revolves as the school’s head of music. He teaches choir and is the advisor for the Photo Qub and the Freshman class. Z eac erd 17 Clockwise From Upper Left: Newcomer Mr. Lindberg teaches computer and math courses and is the advisor for the Junior class and Prom. Our Drama coach and Drama Club advisor is Mr. Messar. He works himself to the bone coaching girls' basketball and advising the Sophomores. Mr. Lake is just the right type to be a Business teacher. He also is a Sophomore class advisor. As the advisor for the Freshman class, the Student Council, and the Concessions stand, our Guidance Counselor, Mr. Grelle, is on call often. Mr. King is a Senior class advisor, the Agriculture teacher, and F.F.A. advisor at L.H.S. Ad- vising the F.H.A. is Mrs. Winchell's cup of tea. She teaches courses in Home Economics. Mr. Kinzler does not serve a strictly ornamental func- tion in our school. He teaches In- dustrial Arts and Driver s Ed. 18 These three administrators work closely as a team to provide the students of the Luck High School with a quality education. Our high school principal (top) is Mr. Jerome Larson. This hard working man takes his job very seriously. Mr. Larson is now in his 13th year as high school principal and has spent the last 33 years serving in the Luck High School System. Before he became principal, Mr. Larson taught Industrial Arts, General Science, and Drivers Educa- tion. Since Mr. Larson has been prin- cipal he has been charged with numerous responsibilities. They in- clude dealing with attendance, school curriculum, safety coordination, and supervision of the junior and senior faculty. Our District Administrator (middle) is Mr. James Garner. This man prob- ably has the most difficult and most important job in the school system. His career in education began 18 years ago in Michigan. Since then he has been a school administrator in Virginia and now in Wisconsin. Mr. Garner's responsibilities include school transportation, the custodians, and the school food service. He also develops the budget, and hosts school board meetings. Mr. Garner received his Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, and then was awarded his Master's degree by the University of Virginia. Last, but not least, is Mr. John Nichols (bottom). Mr. Nichols has two difficult jobs. He is the elemen- tary principal and the Athletic Direc- tor. Mr. Nichols has the task of hiring and evaluating teachers in the elemen- tary branch of our school system. He takes care of elementary discipline and attendance. Mr. Nichols is the man to whom child abuse or neglect cases are reported. Before coming to Luck, he was a Phy. Ed. instructor and coach in the Lomira Schools. He has been the head coach of Football. Basketball, and baseball teams. Mr. Larson and Mr. Nichols work in close harmony under the direct supervision of Mr. Garner. Their jobs, though somewhat thankless, are very important to our school system which is in very capable hands. 19 Sck OO ttSoaJ During the 1963-84 school year, the school board worked hard to keep Luck High School in step with the times.” It instituted many changes within the programs of the school and began planning for others. The board members evaluated and upgraded the curriculum in an at- tempt to bring it up-to-date with the current stan- dards by adding a foreign language, a word pro- cessing program in the business education depart- ment, applying for grants to improve the voca- tional offerings, and continuing with a four year plan to develop a computer lab available to students in all of the grades. The school board also studied and changed to a more efficient building energy management system. It supported a plan to actively develop the school forest for more classroom and com- munity use. A complete fitness program open to all staff members and their spouses was sup- ported by the school board. The members of the board individually and as a group considered an interest in making Luck better” as an overriding concern for the year. The club sponsored a new activity, Spirit Days, which was used to inspire the basketball teams and wrestling squad during tournament play in February. The general purpose of the club was to promote school spirit and a feeling of unity between the students, the faculty, and the community. Three staff members attended a workshop at the University of Wisconsin — Eau Claire. A workshop for the entire staff was presented in the high school during December. The members of the staff worked extremely hard — if at times frantically — to meet their deadlines and to put out a book which they could feel proud of. This year the annual dress-up days were: Punk- Rock, 50's, Klinger (switch) Day, Greece or Toga Day, and the traditional Red, White, Hat, and But- ton Day. There were many activities that went on during the week, such as dances at noon, contests, powder-puff football, the Homecoming Dance, Parade, and of course the BIG game. The high school classes started to work on their floats on Monday night, Sept. 26. On the final day of Homecoming week the seniors were allowed to initiate all new members into the Pep Club, something neither Donna nor Debra Ott will ever forget! 36 Changes occurred not only with the passing of days, weeks, and months, but also with the passing of seconds, minutes, and hours. The pictures on these two pages show just some of the changes made during the typical day of any student at LHS. WH S. MEMBERS: Left to Right: Gar)’ Holm, Tatia Hibbs, Susan Christiansen, Jill Sampe. They performed twice during the winter season — at the Christmas concert in December and the band clinic in February. Nine students were chosen from Luck to play in the Honor Band” with others honored from Osceola. St. Croix, and Unity. They gave a special performance at the band clinic. Most of the third quarter was spent preparing for the district Solo and Ensemble Contest, which was held on March 13 at Osceola. Luck sent a large number of students to State Solo and Ensembles on May 5. The band also per- formed at the Band and Choir Contest at Unity on April 7, where they received a I rating.
