Why all the activity? The great moment had come! They were to begin that great adventure--going to school! With their little hearts thudding with excitement and their faces shining with joy, they climbed aboard their respective busses for their first journey to Lucerne School. Mrs. Powlen received them and made them feel at home immediately. There were Alice Bruce, Lona Bruce, John Burrough, Chris Christiansen, Judy Deck, Iranda Michael, Richard Minniear, Arthur Newell, James Robinson, Johnie Smith. Ruth Swank, Martha Watts, William Weaver, Irmadean Wilson, Jacquillne Titus, Clarence Russell, Dorothy Hess, Clarence Birnell, Ruth Strong, and Linda Hallem--all determined to master the mysteries of Readin', 'Ritin', and 'Rithmetic. Mrs. Powlen gently led them to an understanding of these things, at the same time endeavoring to make the timid ones talk and the talkative ones be silent--at least part of the time. For two years she guided their work. The second year Richard Minnear, Johnie Smith, Ruth Swank, Martha Watts, Jacqulline Titus, Clarence Russell, Dorothy Hess, Clarence Birnell, and Linda Hallam left their class, but the class gained James Roberson, Fred Howard Karen Freer, Richard Bresson, and Carolyn Jones. Them came the first big change-- the move to another room! Here Mrs. Leila Winn directed the little hand of adventurers, now having lost Fred Howard, Karen Freer, and James Roberson, but having gained Jane Kobel, Michael Crane, Robert Jones, and Dennis Gates. Many new fields were opened for them to ex- plore. They learned interesting things about the world in which they lived. They also became more expert at reading and writing, and they began to apply the arith- metic they had studied to more complicated situations. In the fourth grade their only loss was Robert Jones, but they gained Barbara Riengardt, Beverly Tablen Larry Rains, and Ronnie Cunningham. Mrs. Winn continued to help them with their work as they became more and more at home in school. So brave had they become by the time they moved into Mr. Charles Jones' room, they were scarcely alarmed at all. Ronald Bridge, Betty Hatt, Herbert Sibley, Royce Tharp, LaMar Graham, and Jenny Barnes joined the group, and Barbara Reingardt left them. Here again new interests claimed them. Some of the boys began the ad- venture of playing basketball, preparing for the demands to be made upon them in high school. 'Caseyn didn't have Mrs. Powlen's problem--none of them were very shy and quiet anymore, except Lona, but he did have some fun keeping them from ventur- ing into too many experiments before they were ready! The personel of the class in the sixth grade was changed by the loss of Betty Hatt, Herbert Sibley, Richard Bresson, and Beverly Tabler, and the addition of Carlton Thompson, Richard Wahl, and Patricia Gilman. When Mr. Jones decided they were ready, up the stairs the intrepid travelers came, immediately making themselves known in the upper halls. Sometimes, perhaps, a little too well known, but that is the way of adventurers! They learned a little more of the fundamentals: they searched deeper into science and health fieldsg they were given previews of things to come in their high school years. They found re- ference books, magazines, and dictionaries in the back of the room and the library They read about other adventurers in other fields. They had lost Richard Wahl, Royce Tharp, Jane Kobel, and Jenny Barnes and gained Philip Stark. Mr. James Woolsey was their sponsor in this most interesting year. This position of leader was taken over by Mr. Richard Rowe in the eighth year as the group lost Ronald Bridge and Philip Stark and gained Sandra Young. A new challenge met the class in their freshman year. There was that great mystery, algebra, to be met and mastered. All the other subjects became more dif- ficult. Maybe they were ngreen freshmen,n but they were ready to learn. Carlton Thompson moved away and Sandra Grandstaff came to Lucerne that year. The sponsor was Mrs. Virginia Pickle. Boldly they began their sophomore year with only two changes, the loss of Judy Deck and the addition of Suzie Zimmerman. Whenever they thought they had tried every phase of this adventure, new fields were opened for them. Mr. Calvin Kitchell was their sponsor. As juniors they really thought they had the adventure won. Suzie Zimmerman and Irmadean wilson dropped out this year, and Judy Rearick joined them. The final year began with Judy Rearick and Ronnie Cunningham leaving them. Their play was 'Here Comes Charlie.' The graduating members of the class were Alice Bruce, Lone Bruce, Rick Burrough, Chris Christiansen, Michael Crane, Dennis Gates, Pat Gilman, LaMar Graham, Sandra Grandstaff, Arthur Newell, Larry Rains, Jim Robin- son, Tom Weaver, and Sandra Young. Mr. and Mrs. Moss acted as their sponsors. They could hardly wait for the big moment of graduation. Now they began to realize the adventure of education was just begun. College called some, learning to become proficient in some field of work called others. The adventure of becoming educated they realized, is never completed as long as one is alive. They knew they would always look back with affection to the school where they first learned what an in- teresting adventure it could bel a Sensor Class Prophecy After traveling from planet to planet playing piano concerts for more than a year, I returned to the capital of the Earth, Lucerne, to prepare for a vacation in Florida. My new 88 Streamlined Jet got me there in a few minutes, and I regis- tered at the Sea and Sand Hotel. That evening I was dining on heard dreamy music floating on the but PAT GILMANI I rushed into the come in and came over to my table manager of the hotel. Of course, the terrace under the stars when suddenly I air. That sweet voice could belong to noone room to hear the rest of the song. PHS Bl' mi I learned that she was also the owner and our thoughts drifted back to our happy school days at Lucerne High School. Pat told me what a few of her classmates are doing. LARRY RAINS, a professor at Purdue University, is a very happy family man with six little mRaindrops.' ART NEWELL has become a prosperous New York business man. While Pat and I were reminiscing, a dignified salesman walked over to us. The gentleman was none other than TCH WEAVER--his product, ladies' pink cigarettes. As we were talking to Tom, the orchestra furnished dinner music. Suddenly the spotlight turned on a trombone soloist. I almost dropped my fork--the trombonist was RICK BURROUGH. He was as handsome as ever, and Pat said he is not only the most sought-after bachelor in the United States but is also the President's per- sonal lawyer. Now and then he drops in to play with the orchestra when he is on vacation in Florida. Pat asked us all to come to the lounge for coffee. Rick brought JIM ROBINSON, another vacationer. Jim, as Oscar award winner for the third time, is Hollywood's Glamour Boy and was to return to Hollywood soon to be- gin another picture. Naturally, all doing. We all knew around the world for doing7' I was quite of us tried to surprised when find out what the rest of the class of '59 is that CHRIS CHRISTIANSEN is a very famous scientist, known his space accomplishments. Then I asked, 'What is MIKE CRA! they said Hike is a deep sea diver, who hunts of the attractive panelists was SANDRA G NI BELFF. She tobk the opportunity to for Chris' lost missiles. Pat suggested we tune in television. When the dulcet tones of the Master of Ceremonies began, we knew why. It was H NNIS GATES! His program is very popular--especially with women. He tella.them the right styles, how to reduce, and how to beautify themselves. A panel show was on next, and one plug her new play on Broadway. The next morning Pat and I went to the beauty salon. Pat's personal hair- dresser ie ALICE BRUCE. Alice is still the same sweet, friendly person. Since I was going to return home in a few days, being a woman, I decided to go :hopplnga Walking down Broadway, I came to a very exculsive dress shop called Lo a e. Entering, I was greeted by LONA BRUCE, a very fashionable woman. Lona led me into the lounge where to be the former children. Lona bench, not as a and Sandra told she was showing dresses to another woman. The woman turned out sumss YOUNG, and with ner were her beautiful, red-haired Brand- me that LaHar Graham is still sitting on the student manager, but as the coach of the world famous 'Space Trotters.' After a wonderful vacation, I returned home to the great city, Lucerne, feel- ing refreshed and deeply touched to think that the members of this worderful class have become leading citizens of the United States of America. r W 4' , 'N 1- I. ... , I I.
