the football season Jrm worked with every ounce of strength to make the first team He was determined to make a good impression on the coach and hrs efforts brought hrm success If it yyere possible he worked harder after making the team than before And hrs playrng was not the only benefit that the team received from hrm Hrs cheery yyords and courageous smrle often brought hope to the team rn the flVlllg moments of many games The hardest game of the season as all of the loys yyell kneyy yyould be the game with Stan ton Lnry ersrty which had always been the rry al term of lr mfax Ilnrverslty For the last few vears Stanton had had a slightly better team than Fairfax But were the Fairfax boys to be drsheartened by tnrs' Not at all' The d rv of the game came at last Hundreds of rooters for both teams thronged the big field where the game was to be played Each srde was confident of yyrnnrng and cheered the terms with all the zeal that two rlval teams can show When the thlrd quarter had ended the score stood O 0 The teams w ere evenly matched and neither seemed able to make any progress 'lhen out ot that mass of strugglrng humanity a figure darted and ran wrth amazing speed Try as thev would the Stanton boys could not stop hrm He carried the ball across the l1ne w hrle a great cry arose from the Farrfax rooters The few remaining minutes seemed almost an eternrty to the anxious Farrfax boys But rn rcallty they passed qurckly The score was r0 rn favor of Fairfax and it was the first time rn years that Fairfax had beaten Stanton What a reception that team got from its dc more keenly because of the fact that rt would cost hm hrs last year at college It was wrth very genulne sorrow that Mr Noreworth told hrs son that he was unable to pay the last yeir s college expenses for he knew that hm honestly wanted to finrsh hrs course But hm yyas not the one to cross hrs bridges before he reached them There yvas a scholarship of a years turtron which yyas open to anyone rn the college So .hm decrded to try for rt At least the scholar ship would take care of one part of the expense The contestants were required to yy rrte an essay on Educatron .hm yvrote hrs and yy rote rt wxth all the care that he could command He wanted that scholarship as he had wanted but few things 1n all his life After weeks of anxrous wartrng he recerved a letter one day telllng him that he had won the scholar ship and congratulatrng h1m on hrs success Mr Norew orth yyas more proud of hrs son at that t1n1e than he could say He wished .hm the best of luck rn h1s last school year and vowed to get back hrs fortune if posslble to help hrs son went with the rntentron of working He sayv DlallllV that he would have lrttle time for par tres and other good times He knew he would mrss them but hrs education w as more rmpor tant than good times It so happened that a certarn farmer who lived rbout a mrle outside the college town necded a boy to delry er mrlk earlv ru the morn ings He was wrllrng to pay a good salary so hm volunteered for the Job Luck yyas with hrm and he succeeded 1n gettrng the posrtron hm knew that rt certarrr of hrs classmates learned ot the work he was dorng he yy ould be teased contrnuallv and unmercrtullv So he de crded th rt he would Just go on yy 1th hrs work and tell no one He nrade other spendmg money bv tutorrng some ot the underclassmen yyho were all boys wrth too much monev and too little desrre for study Jrm had been w orkrng for the farmer for four or hye weeks and rs he thought no one yvas the wrser He got up at tour oclock rn the morning and delryered milk tlll seyen thirty Srncc none of thc college boys were cyer up at these hours hrs work was kept secret as soon as the college boys returned to school many partrcs yyere gryen at houses THF QLODDY LIGHT GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES The Lnrted States IS a federal republrc and rts government IS long complrcated and drfli cult to understand Lnder our svstem author lty flows from two There are more but these are the onlv ones prohrbrted to both After they had provrded for the general powers of the federal government and had made the needful prohrbrtrons of power w should thrnk
