THE Q1 ODDX LIGHT clensrons and dozens of other trresome and rrk orne thrngs Durrng that flrst rear whrch was long and uneventful we studied wrote Wrote-and studred We used reams and reams of paper rn wrrtrng the numberless Englrsh themes re qurred of ns and we w rll always look back wrth rcgret on that great waste of trme paper gray matter rnk and energv He grew grate and carew orn from burnrng the mrdnrght orl and when at last the summer vacation came we welcomed rt wrth unrestrarned shouts of de lrglrt Indeed rt was a rather lrmp and d1s1l lusroned class of lrreshmen whrch gladly changed rts name to Sophomore at the close of the wear Although we towed that we never wanted to see another school book as long as we lrved strll the followrng September found the most oi us hack at school agaln Twenty two of our class sad to sax had haselv deserted us some had gone to other schools whrle a few had apnarentlv grown trred of our congenral companronshrp and had left us to struggle on wrthout them As I have sard before we had grown to be a very grave class Thus it happened that rn stead of applyrng to us the usual eprthet of Srllx Sophs they called us the Serrous Soph ornores lt can he truthfully sard that we drd am sorrv to sav many bad habrts from the naughty JUHIOTS and the reckless Senrors such as chewrng gum wrrtrng notes Whrsperrng tlrrowrng erasers md eatrng candv rn school There were several changes rn the teachrng staff at the begrnnmg of our Sophomore year Of the last vear s teachers only Mr Barley and lvlrss Adams had returned The following new teacher had been engaged Mrss VVhrte for French Mrss Smrth for the Commercral de partment 'vlrss Iefferds for Domestrc Scrence and Nlrss Towle for Latrn ta most excellent teacher with whom we perused Caesars Gallrc Vx ars and found Latrn a verv fascrnatrng and rnterestrng studv I Our French classes were alwavs verv ex crtrng The arr was ex er full of flvrng mrssrles rnclndrng rubbers chalk and erasers The tu mult was often dreadful Mrss Whrte was ohlrged to spend two thrrds of her trme makrng threats whrle the other thrrd was devoted to rnstructrng us rn the use of the partrtrve Nev trtheless durlng the lulls rn the battle we prcked up an astounding amount of knowledge md were exceedinglx hurt when our next l-rcnch teacher did not thrnk us at all well rn tmnred on the subgect tlfr Our Sophomore year passed bv qurcklv and hrpprls Sex eral members of our class left us durrng the wear so that there remarned a total of only thrrty erght who attained at last that longdesrred tltle of Junrors Our lunror wear seemed 1ll fated from the first War was gorng on rn Europe and mam teachers had deserted therr professron to take up war work thus makrng rt almost rmpossrble to secure enough to supplv all the schools But thrs was not all for at that trme a dread ful eprdemrc cornmonls known as the flu was ragrng all over the country causrng nn speakable grref and mrserv everywhere To us one of the saddest events of that terrrble fall was the death of our new prrncipal Wir Matthews who was one of the many vlctrms of the eprdemrc School drd not open untrl very late Creat rnconr enrence was caused hy the fact that the number of teachers was rnsufhcrent to carrs on the necessrrr work It w as plarn to be seen that others must be secured at once Thus lt happened that we had a great varretx of teach crs durrng our IIIIIIOI' year as some stayed wrth us for onlv short perrods of trme They drffered wrdelv rn looks and temper and ranged rn age from twentr to sex entv five We had for a trme a certarn 'Vlrss Donosan for Englrsh rn trnctor Xlrth her we struggled through the ranhv and would have found rt verv nksome rndeed rt ser eral of our classmates had not en dear ored to the best of therr ahrlrts to enlrt en the lessons somewhat bv performrng antrcs whrch were at once grotesque and rrdrculous And when we were rendered helpless from laughter 'Vlrss Donovan whollv unapprecratrve rnd exasperated would send these selfap nornted clowns vom the room and grve them zero Owrng to the fact that the school year had been so broken up we w ere excused from Tumor prrze speakrng whrch we of course deeply re grett dt'U The great event of the year was the .lunror Prom whrch proved to be a very :rand rnd successful rffarr Towards the close ot the wen we w e blessed wrth a new French teacher Nlrss Tre carton who was reported to he fast approach rng her hundredth brrthdrv but who showed no srgns of her great senrlrtv save lor a slrght deafness and occasronal huzzrng norses rn her head whrch she mrstook tor whrsperrng on the r rrt ot the students and often rrrnocent puprls wfre he rrtlesslx condemned and sent from the room rn drsgrane all because she could not be convmred that the norses she heard were rn her ' v v ' ' Y V ' 1 'T 1'-t V l - ' .
