THE QUODDX LIGHT Svulutaturg Ely: Gina! llinmen ni th: Qlrpulrllr Four years 'wo when we first entered High School as Freshmen we scarcely dared thlnle of our graduation it vsas so far aw av But the years have passed quickly 'may and to night ue are at the close of our school life in Lubec and wc face the opening of a new career Dear friends of Lubec we have felt your interest 1n us and have seen your co oper 'mon both with the teachers and with us We realize that you have aided us at every opportun1ty given and it IS not as strang ers but as true fr1ends that we earnestly and sincerely welcome you here to night We desire this even1ng to be one of pleas ure to you To you dear parents who have so dih gently urged us onward through our school eareer, we pay the greatest tribute And it is not only with a welcome, but vs 1th heartfelt thanks that we greet you Our mothers ' Xou women vsho have in order to educate your children VVe ap precmte your eiforts And lt is because of you that I haye chosen as my subject The Great Women of the Republic Our Republlc has many great women, but I have seleeted three perhaps not the greatest but who appealed to me the most to show how the women 'md the mothers hive struggled md labored for the better ment of our n mon Duimg the p lst few years everyone h is heard of ind been gre mtly interested in the Amerle Ln Reel Cross Many tunes h we the people of the Lnited St mtes blessed this orgamzatlon for its aid to their loved ones over there Xvlth what willingness and kindness the Red Cross nurses cared for our boys Lnder shot and shell during hardships and discomforts these angels of mercy yy orked Have ue ever thought of the Oflglfl of the Red Cross? Of eourse it was some 11 lustrious gentleman vs ho organized this Ah but no It was a woman who was the p1oneer of this practical work At the out break of the c,1V1l VVar Clara Barton loyal American girl left her well paying position at Washmgton and devoted her self to the humane eare of the soldiers on the battlefiell Night and day Miss Bar ton worked bandagmg wounds bringing in the wounded and burying the dead In 1864 because of her capabihty and earn estness, she was glven charge of the army hospitals on the james river and there nursed the Blue and the Gray side by side War She carried on relief work during the famine in Russia and during the mas sacres in Armenia And 1n our own Span ish American War she did personal work in the Held Miss Barton s entire life vsas spent in serving others serving her na tion She was a noble woman a woman who not only introduced, but developed the greatest humamtanan movement ever begun in our country The nation never can pay the honor and respect due her for setting sueh 1 lasting example to posterity The close of the QIVII War brought 1 new pioneer into the field Imemper mee 1161 vm!
