Of eourse it was some 11 lustrious gentleman vs ho organized this Ah but no It was a woman who was the p1oneer of this practical work At the out break of the c,1V1l VVar Clara Barton loyal American girl left her well paying position at Washmgton and devoted her self to the humane eare of the soldiers on the battlefiell Night and day Miss Bar ton worked bandagmg wounds bringing in the wounded and burying the dead In 1864 because of her capabihty and earn estness, she was glven charge of the army hospitals on the james river and there nursed the Blue and the Gray side by side War She carried on relief work during the famine in Russia and during the mas sacres in Armenia And 1n our own Span ish American War she did personal work in the Held Miss Barton s entire life vsas spent in serving others serving her na tion She was a noble woman a woman who not only introduced, but developed the greatest humamtanan movement ever begun in our country The nation never can pay the honor and respect due her for setting sueh 1 lasting example to posterity The close of the QIVII War brought 1 new pioneer into the field Imemper mee 1161 vm!
