THE QUODDY LIGHT sequently came back w1th a smattering of typewrltmg a llberal supply of chewmg gum and a full knowledge of the latest fash1ons It was agreed to buy Ierusha one new cahco dress To her great dismay when Ma Bean returned from the city Jerusha found the dress to be of a peculxar red, evidently shop worn and faded and hber ally sprmkled wlth white clrcles When m de up 1n the simplest way possfble the skirt was too long and very uneven around the hem On the morning of the beginning of school Jerusha was up before sunrise domg the chores At an early hour she departed with a neighbor who was going to the city and who had prormsed to take her over Try to xmagme Jerusha waiting at the gate for the slowly approaching wagon arrayed in that hideous calico dress a new pair of thxck, coarse moccasms homespun stock ings an old faded pink ha1r ribbon hed a huge cows breakfast as lt was called Her small freckled face was flushed and she was qulvermg with excitement As Jerusha entered the school ground some girls play-mg volley ball stopped stared and finally burst into 1ll-concealed g gqles -Ierusha lifted her chin a bit high er and passed these thoughtless girls not unheedful of the excrted murmur of voices behlnd her Some rude boys accosted her in the corridor and called her Freshle and one darmgly asked her as to where she had stolen the cows breakfast Even the teachers smiled queerly as she came into the-rr rooms and of all this Jerusha was keenly conscious Silas and Pete won deled at one another at the supper table that night for Jerusha had abandoned her fax orite topic of school C237 That night as Jerusha crept into bed in the attic her heart was heavy She tossed her red dress and moccasms into the far thest corner of the room buried her head in the scantv pillow and crled herself to sleep But now the scene changes As we look towards the entrance of the sthool grounds a tall graceful glrl enters She IS dressed entirely in white and as she approaches a host of girls surround her and escort her to the doorway Her beautiful auburn hair of which she has an abundance is becommgly arranged and as the sun plays on lt IS strikingly handsome As she smiles she shows two gleaming rows of teeth We inquire her name from a girl near us and are eagerly lnformed that it is Jerusha Bean a semor and the most popular glrl ln school As Jerusha is fimshmg an excltmg game o volley ball a voice is heard calling Je rusha Jerusha and Jerusha finds the a cute little Ford wartmg to take her for a rrde Im coming Pa she answered Waal hurry up and git down here and do this er churnlng was the answer Je rusha startled by this unexpected reply woke up and started when she perceived herself ln her own room with the sun streaming ln at the wmdow lighting up the red dress to perfection Why where is the car the girls the school? she asked herself Why I ve been dreaming Poor Iemsha to awake and find herself only a poor little insignificant Freshman with a red and white cal1co dress some moccasms and a cows breakfast Yet the dream had not been in vain She had caught a glimpse of the future Ierusha Bean E L M 19 D 1 A , - . . .I ' ' l .
